This was an amazing story. I read it straight through. Couldn't put it down. It reminded me of the Song Of Albion series written by Stephen Lawhead in the mid 1990s. I loved the premise, the plot, the action, the emotion. It was amazing. And those characters were in perilous situations so often it was downright thrilling. I love it when situations seem hopeless, but then something happens to turn it around. But like life, it's never easy. Love isn't easy, nor is faith, not when the facts tell yo...more

Ted Dekker has done it again. A fun read, lots of intrigue, good points raised and it left me wanting more. So, I've started on book 2 of the History of Books.
This was a short book so it was a quick read. I enjoyed meeting four new characters in the "other" world that Ted has created to help us process good vs. evil. I think the thing that I caught most from the books was that we all have the desire to be loved, or at least liked, by those around us. We also all want to accomp...more

I liked this book. It was kind of like a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings type, where the author has created a completely different world. So that, in itself is interesting; just learning the things about this new world that make it work. Then, you mix in the battle of good versus evil ... and that adds good twists and turns.
The premise is the good vs. evil .... the good, being the Forest Dwellers, and the evil being the Horde. The Forest Dwellers are small in number, and live in the last ...more

In a grassy stadium field, twelve of the forest’s strongest and bravest young fighters compete to determine who will be the four new squad leaders to serve with Forest Guard commander, Thomas Hunter. Johnis watches with his father from the sidelines as the twelve play this game called football, impressed with the strength of the contestants, but not their wit.
When the ball rolls into the audience and up to Johnis’ feet, he hides it, rather than throw it back out. Thomas urges the contest...more

I've loved all of Ted's other books, and this one did NOT disappoint!! I was so excited when I found it (I didn't know he'd written more to the Circle Trilogy) and I could not WAIT to start! I love how he built off of the already written Circle Trilogy, but had different main characters then Thomas, but still having Thomas in it... I love when he has those small clips and happenings from his other books mixed in. It's hard to explain what I mean by that, so you'll just have to read all of his bo...more

Think with your heart and prepare to die for you have been Chosen.
The land of the Forest Dwellers has been decimated by the Horde under the watchful eye of the vilest of all creatures, Teeleh. Thomas Hunter, supreme commander of the Forest Guard, is forced to lower the recruitment age of his army from 18 to 16. From among thousands, four new recruits are chosen to lead--and perhaps die--for the greater good.
The chosen four are sent on a quest to prove their character, but their mission takes...more

Ted Dekker expands "The Circle" universe that he started with the Black, Red, White trilogy with a series aimed at young adults and teenagers. There is a short intro in the beginning of Chosen but its best that you read Black, Red, White and probably even Showdown (another extension of the story which is briefly referenced in Chosen) before starting this book.
That being said, Chosen is a wonderful story of struggles with one's faith. Four teenagers are chosen to join the Forest Gua...more

This book is targeted to the teens. I thought I should read it first before passing it on to my daughter. I enjoyed the story, but I might wait another year or two before letting Rachel read it. Not quite sure if she'll find it interesting.

To really get into this book it is almost a must that you have read Black at the minimum. When you understand the context and the environment that this book takes place in, it is much easier to enjoy. The only thing that I always find a little odd about Dekker(and this book is no exception) is that he always wants to throw in little tid bits from other books, but if you have not read that particular book I can really see how you could get lost. This book has a short refrence to Skin in it when...more

I'm not sure what I think about this book. I sit here and feel that there is so much to ponder beyond what was written. The story itself is fast paced and you must pay attention for one thing happens after another in a perfect harmony. The characters are great and lovable, while the villains are very much the opposite as should be. I can tell from reading this story that there is so much more in Ted's mind of what is going on and I'm curious about more related books to see what more I can delve ...more

This fits in between Black and Red really well, and it's paced perfectly. I noticed that TD borrowed at least one semi-idea from CS Lewis, the having faith and seeing what's invisible (Aslan/Roush and Shataiki) and leading people when they can't see the way. The whole book is built on the theme of trust.
Though TD went to the bad guys' povs, he didn't spend too much time there.

I was so sad when I finished the cirlce trilogy, but so excited when I found out about these books. Not quite as good as the trilogy, but still a great read. Made for a younger audience, I think. They fill in a large gap in Black, the first book in the trilogy. The main character is different, which took some getting used to, but well worth reading.

Absolutely awesome! I am always in awe of Dekker's writings and this book was no less. The storyline intermingles with so many of his other books, from the Circle, and I feel the need to go back and reread them to find the references and allusions to this story. I can't wait to start book two and I am not sure I can wait until May when the next two come out.

I have not read much in the way of juvenile fiction but I very much liked this book. It's a fun little story that's going to span across three more books (and has apparently already spanned 10 novels and 3 graphic novels. Admittedly, I didn't read any of the previous novels/ graphic novels but I wasn't lost in the story.
