The second book that I've read in Spanish, this one left me feeling distinctly meh. A promising conceit - an extraterrestrial lands in Barcelona, in search of one of his crewmates and reports on the local population and customs. However, the execution, despite having the definite virtue of brevity (140 or so pages), was somewhat labored, and certainly nowhere near as amusing as the teacher who recommended the book to me seemed to find it.

Sin Noticias de Gurb is one of those books that you could kick yourself for not thinking of the idea first. It is a diary of messages sent by an extraterrestrial who comes to earth, takes on human form, and dryly narrates what he discovers about life here on earth—or at least life in Barcelona. It is laugh-out-loud funny in many parts and even more so if you happen to be something of an outsider yourself but have been in Spain just long enough to recognize some of the more absurd aspect...more

An extra-terrestrial arrives on earth to look for his colleague, Gurb. Although he can materialize a human appearance and has keen powers of observation and data analysis, his assessments lack certain social sensibilities. A good example is when a waiter asks what he would like to drink, he responds (with certainty of the probity of his answer): "urine."

Leí este libro en el instituto y por obligación, pero tengo de él muy buenos recuerdos. Es una historia llena de humor y crítica ante la Barcelona posterior a las Olimpiadas fantásticamente escrita. Es muy fácil de leer, hasta el punto de que en un momento se termina sin que sepas muy bien cómo has llegado a la última página.

Ridiculous humor and highly enjoyable! Especially appealing to those who have travelled to Catalonia once before. I am a great fan of Eduardo Mendoza's bizarre humor.
