I'm tempted to say that there is a lot to learn from this book. However, it is marred by a procession of errors and mistakes so bad that the editor should be fired and the authors should be embarrassed.

And, I'm not talking about any of the controversial stuff. Before I even get to the Jewish history and so-called secrets, I am distracted by a level of factual inaccuracy that had previously been reserved to just Dan Brown - but he writes novels. That an academic book would be so riddled with...more

This book was really good. I always wondered why all the women in Michaelangelo's works were such "handsome" women....interesting take on the Sistine Chapel and Michaelangelo's hidden digs at the Catholic Church, the Pope at the time, etc. It points out various facets of the Sistine Chapel, of which I was unaware - I did not know it was modeled after the Temple of Solomon and I did not know that Michaelangelo used such controversial and almost heretical themes.

There were some re...more

This is a great book for those who want to learn more about the Sistine Chapel. The history at the beginning is a bit slow, but the research is well done. It is very interesting. I can't say that I agree with all the conclusions of authors, but the authors made a good case for their work.

The most interesting aspect of this book is what I learned about Jewish mysticism. I would like to delve into that a bit more.

A disappointment about this book is that most of the illustrations are in bla...more

A very good book - somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me - so I gave it the benefit of the higher rating. It's a captivating in-depth study of Michelangelo's work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. I find all of the hidden meanings and stories fascinating - and it gave me a much greater understanding and appreciation for Michelangelo as an artist. This is especially true given the risks that he faced from the Church, the Inquisition, etc.

This was a fascinating look at the artist that created the Sistine frescoes. The book places Michaelangelo in the context of his times both politically and spiritually. I would recommend carrying a larger book containing close-up phontos of the cleaned ceiling. The photos in the book are a bit small and it's sometimes difficult to see the "hidden" parts of the works. I was interested to learn the origin of the word "Vatican."

So far, reading this book, it is VERY advesarial towards Popes and the Catholic Church. Although the facts presented may not be false, the apologies made for it's enemies are illustrated while the church's motives are omitted.

Love this. Great information about the sistine chapel. I was enthralled with this book. Especially helpful if you are going or have gone to Rome to see this magnificent work of art.

What a surprise to see that Michelangelo painted Jewish mysticism all over the Sistine and the Popes didn't know it. Cool.

This book was a lot of fun. Yes, some of the history is a bit off, but that didn't take away from the fun of it!!!
