Great this one was as much fun to read as Die Trying and it had a better story and tighter plot. This one has been the hardest to put down of the series so far. It starts off a tad confusing, but you don't have to stick with it long to become hooked. Most of the twists Lee Child put there I didn't see coming and that is always fun. This one is another that at times seems more like a cookie cutter crime fiction book, it isn't though. Awesome action sequences, a great plot, and the best characters...more

This was good, but I didn’t like it as much as I liked Running Blind, which is not to say that I didn’t like it, because I did. I read this one in kind of a trance, turning pages, along for the ride, not having to think too hard. Which is not to say that it was sophomoric, either. I’ve only read the two, but I’ve decided that these Jack Reacher novels are like literary “A-Team” episodes. (And how awesome is that??) Here's the formula: Jack Reacher blows into town, sees injustic...more

Rather than review each of Lee Child's books, all of which I've read over the past few months, I chose one at random, and let my comments here suffice to cover them all. He's my favorite crime-thriller-investigative novelist. While I'm reading his books, it's as if I'm in a self-contained world. I drift through the pages in an enjoyable trance, you might say. His hero, Jack Reacher, is an ex-military cop who falls into cases and lends his expertise towards getting rid of any number of bad guys....more

Jack Reacher is an admirable character in his way, but I found the plot of this book to be a bit slow. Punctuated with moments of action, it spent too much time wallowing in the personal nonsense of its characters. This, of course, is a stylistic preference. Mr. Child's writing is true to his British roots. If you like other British crime authors, you may love this book. For me, it didn't do it.

Another good Jack Reacher novel, a bit different than the previous ones. Jack usually "gets the girl" but in this one the two females are unavailable. The focal female is in jail most of the time and the secondary female is gay.

Jack and the woman lawyer spend a lot of time and gasoline proving the other woman is innocent of the murder she confessed to in great detail.

Reacher seemed off his game in this one...not quite catching all the cues and clues. I didn...more

A new author and series for me. A quick read, exciting mystery. This is the first of a series of 13 "Reacher" books I've read and I'd like to work my way through more.

Yes, this is one of those cheesy murder mysteries you buy at the airport. I never read these books, but I read this one. I have to say it was quite good: fulfills all the criteria of the genre (page-turner, nail-biter, etc.) However, this book is a dangerous gateway novel to the 11 other books Lee Child wrote about the same tough-guy-with-a-heart protagonist (Jack Reacher.) Its taken me a month to return to a real book after reading this one and Running Blind (which was so terrible and pre...more

They used to call stories like this, "rippingly good yarns."
Fast paced with lots of plot threads and no clue as to where we are bound. That is a big part of the fun.

In this book, Reacher is hitching a ride and gets picked up by a beautiful woman who is looking for someone to save her - from her husband.

Jack Reacher is an ex-Military Policeman who has left the service. He doesn't stay in one spot long, but that doesn't stop him from getting sucked into one situation after another that can benefit from his special talents. And I do mean military training...

The plots of the books are generally involved and some may question Reacher's...more

Goodness, over half way thru and I'm totally into this story. I have absolutely no idea what's going on with Carmen; a little disappointed with Jack and Alice and love Jack's honest, silent thoughts; can't wait to see what happens between the three killers and the new big mystery contract!; now just waiting to hear what little Ellie has to say about her mother and father. Absolutely astounding description of the legal system in Texas. (Is anyone familiar enough with it all to comment on Child...more

my fav librarian nancy pearl recommended this author. i picked up echo burning from my grandma's used book store. perhaps i should have started with the first in the jack reacher (? - sorry, i'm forgetting) series. while echo burning is definitely a page turner - and i enjoyed that the good-looking young lawyer is a lesbian and not a love interest for jack - there is something that is keeping me from continuing on with another child. ..not so say that i won't be back, but just not for the next c...more

My friend Erica recently discovered Child's Jack Reacher novels and has been tearing through all of them. She lent this one to me to read while I was in El Paso Texas, visiting a friend, the area where this book is based.

Jack Reacher is a friggin badass, a lot like MacGuiver, but with more of a temper and an tendency to kill. Reading it while in the Texas/New Mexico area was awesome because I was much better equipped to imagine the big red house in the vast nothingness from the no...more

This is my first Jack Reacher book and i apparently didn't pick a great one. The description of the Texas heat is far more impressive than the main character who i found to be more superhuman than the flawed heroes of this genre. While I have to admit it was a great page turner, the plot had too many incredulous factors including the initial premise that a battered woman would pick up a 6'8" hitchhiker for protection. I wiil try another Reacher before I pass final judgment on this series.

It's so hard for me to believe Lee Child is British. His novels are so American. His character, Jack Reacher, is a raw American free soul who has no home and travels with a toothbrush, the clothes on his back and $1,000 cash. No id, no nothing. In Echo Burning, he's hitchhiking and picked up by a woman who's on a hunt to find someone to kill her husband. It's a great story just like his others.

Jack Reacher. What more can you say about him. Men want to be him and women...well you know what women want. Child knows how to crank up the tension in a scene while creating a truly lickable...I mean Likeable kind of character. He may not be perfect. You may not agree with everything that he does. But he has created a life for himself that the rest of us can really only dream of.

Reacher is about the best of the best. He is incisive, tough and commanding and never takes any unnecessary guff from anyone. This time he is not only solving spousal abuse but current and old murders. Reacher is his usual methodical self and takes things one step at a time...and also relies on his past experience to give him insights that many others would not have. A great read.

I love a good thriller...I just don't think there are many of them out there. Lee Child's books are great, though - well plotted and fast-paced. Plus, he writes decent women characters, which is especially rare in this genre.
That said, this isn't one of my favorites. He does a good job of complicating the plot, but to a point where it kind of gets in the way of the action.

Jack Reacher = awesome. Some books are better than others, but they're always enjoyable. I've read half a dozen. With the exception of the one where Reacher works with the Secret Service on protecting the president, they're all above average at worst, excellent at best. Echo Burning is very enjoyable, with some interesting info about Texas justice.

good pulp fiction. Fun and fast paced. No literary value but a fun book, nonetheless.
