Ahhhhh.
Have you ever met a person who you thought was odd, weird, just a bit off, and then, when you get to know this person--really get to know someone, you realize you found a true friend--someone that you feel like you've known for eternity? That was this book for me. I wasn't into it for the first third of the book, and then something special happened. I understood it. I understood every single last frustration of being born in the Soviet Union, escaping those Jewish-hating fascists and reinventing a family in America. I felt every word flow through my blood stream. I understood and then I felt. And when the characters (who were all magical in different ways) were hurting, so was I. And when they saw glimmers of joy, so did I.
Maybe I feel this way now because my gramps, suffering from many things in a solitary house of pain (nursing home), was born during the pogroms and is now remembering things from 50, 60, 70 years ago that are affecting me in this way....but, Ms...more
