This is the story of Helen of Sparta - the girl who would grow up to become Helen of Troy with the face that launched a thousand ships. But this story is definitely not about her face.

Friesner draws a portrait of young Helen as a true Spartan queen. She is bright, stubborn, and has a true warrior's heart. Tired of spinning and weaving, Helen joins her brothers Castor and Polydeuces in learning combat, archery, and hunting. In this adventurous tale Helen irritates and comforts her sister Clytemnestra, meets warrior woman Atalanta and does her best to stay far away from boastful Theseus. She sneaks after her brothers to take part in their adventures and again and again proves that determination, dedication and hard work are what make true warriors regardless of gender.

I loved this story. An adventure story with similar themes to my old favorites The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. Not for nothing does this book have a quote by that author on the jacket.
