886144 I actually liked The Host better than Twilight. I mean, Twilight is amazing and all, but to me, The Host was even more gripping. I felt like it had a lot more depth. Also, I'm just really happy to see that Stephenie Meyer has more than one story to tell. It's sad when an author can only write tons of books that are all exactly the same, so it's a relief to see that Meyer is an author whose mind can come up with lots of brilliant ideas. Sure, her writing style isn't the most amazing in the world; but she's such a great storyteller. I love Twilight, but I felt like it was the Host that really convinced me that Stephenie Meyer is a genius!

1412137 Of the two, I liked Twilight better. It pulled me in almost as soon as I started reading and I quickly fell in love with the characters and the story. After I was done with the series, I actually felt sad...I hated to leave their world. I really enjoyed the love story of Bella and Edward. I thought SM did an amazing job with the story and how it evolved through all the books.

Like you, I was thrilled when I read The Host and discovered that SM had more wonderful stories to tell! I truly enjoyed the book, even though I thought it was slow for about the first half. But then the story picked up and I devoured it! There were even tears involved in this one! I think SM does such a great job of getting the readers to really care about her characters and get to know them so well. It makes the story much more fulfilling.

886144 Definitely! I really feel for Stephenie Meyer's characters. And there were parts of The Host that made me cry, too. XD

1357622 i dont know why....but i really liked twilight muchhhh better than the host....or maybe it was just because i read twilight first that it made the host so predictable......i like the love concept better in twilight......if that even makes sense....

1429308 yeah, I agree somewhat with that last part...the relationship in twilight was more...understandable? I don't know how to word it. It wasn't PREDICTABLE at all, but understandable...

The Host was much more in depth...it gives lot's more background. It's like comparing long, stringy hair to full, shiny, voluminous hair. (I know it's weird, but stay with me.) You can do some nice, even great things with both, but overall the big hair gets more stars.

08/17/2008 02:31PM

886144 i didn't think the host was predictable at all; i thought it was going to have some really tragic ending, but it was actually relatively happy.

1412137 I didn't think that The Host was predictable either...in fact, I found myself speed reading because I was so anxious to find out what was going to happen! I was really pleased with the ending...I thought it was a great book.

Nophoto-u-25x33 I loved The Host. I hope SM's next book is more along the lines of The Host, which had a lot in common with the Twilight books, but was more complex. I loved the Twilight books until I read BD, which kind of soured me on the whole series.

08/22/2008 10:09AM

886144 I still need to read breaking dawn... i'm nervous though cuz overall a lot of ppl seemed to hate it. :(

Nophoto-f-25x33 I loved Breaking Dawn!, and I loved Twilight, but I didn't think the second or third books were as good in the series..And to be honest, I didn't really like the Host that much. I thought it was just alright.

960350 Hm. I think as a series I love The Host more. It's great alone with one volume, so I'm hoping that The Soul and The Seeker live up to it.

I believe it deserves a movie so much more than the Twilight series does (wah, don't kill me!)

1246342 I loved The Host because it was more along the lines of the kind of book that I'd read, while I had a bit of a hard time relating to the Twilight books. Don't get me wrong or anything, they're still great books, and very well-written, I just couldn't relate to them much.

I would love to see how they would make The Host into a movie, that would be great. For instance, how would they portray the insertion and the memories?

08/23/2008 12:14PM

886144 to make The Host into a movie would be really hard... i wonder how it could be done?? it would be really cool if someone found a way to pull it off. :D

Nophoto-f-25x33 i thought the host was kind've confusing and i do like the romance better in twilight its more gripping i think also i thought that it was all about wanda and i didn't really like that it was just all about wanda i guess i liked the human wanda was in better i'd rather hear her storie

i'm glad there doing twilight for the movie but i think edward is all wrong and so is bella but oh well nobodys good for edward

1412137 Eliza - I have to agree with you on the movie Edward...no one could ever live up to the Edward that exists in my mind!!! I think the Bella character may be ok - I hope! But I definitely don't think they cast well for Edward. I guess I'll just have to see the movie...I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

955788 Personally, I liked Eclipse, then the Host then New Moon then Twilight and finally Breaking Dawn. I was SO impressed that the "Adult" novel was just as good, if not better than her Young Adult books. I LOVE HOST!!!! ;P

680178 I read Twilight a year or two ago, and it was gripping and I sped through it, but for some reason I stopped about 100 pages from the end. I put it down and never picked it up again.

It was a great story, yes, but The Host is much more in depth. I haven't finished it yet, in fact I'm only in about 60 pages, but I'm amazed at the creativity in it.

I'd have to say I like The Host better so far, even though I'm not even close to it.

- For those posts up there regarding a movie: After about the first 10 pages, i thought to myself, "this would be a GREAT movie."

Also, is The Host part of a series? I see someone posted something about "The Soul" and "The Seeker", but I can't find any information about them.

960350 Haha, that was me, Aaron :) Stephenie Meyer has said that she's 'almost done' with the second book of The Host (not sure which one of the two will be the sequel, but she plans on it).

And YES. *high fives* The Host will be a great movie! (look at my earlier post ^^)

Nophoto-u-25x33 For me it depends on if you consider Twilight the series or just the book. I preferred Twilight the book to Host, but I preferred the Host to the Twilight series. Of all Stephenie Meyers books this is my list of preference:
Twilight
The Host
New Moon
Eclipse
Breaking Dawn.

1590783 I really liked The Host! ive read all of her books at least 3 times each and i like them all but i have to agree and say that The Host has more depth to the relationships and story so i think it may be my favorite. BUT its just so hard to pick. If i had to pick a favorite of the Twilight series it would be Eclipse. I love the conflict in her heart (maybe thats why i like The Host too). Im really anxious for the next book that SM comes out with :)

Nophoto-u-25x33 after reading the host, i felt more attached to the characters than i was attached with the twilight series characters...the host's dilemma just gripped me, and kept me trying to figure out how it would end satisfyingly...i can't really decide which i like better but i can definitely arrange them from my favorite one till the least favorite....i think first comes the host AND twilight..i can't decide which is better yet...after comes breaking dawn, and later eclipse and finally new moon. also, i find that the host's characters r more intriguing than twilight's.

Nophoto-u-25x33 and....it was much easier 4 bella to accept the idea of vampires and loving one too, because she suspected that from the very beginning...but it was much much much harder for the remaining humans to accept wanda as a friend instead of an enemy...sharon and mag didn't like wanda almost till the end!!!...so when it comes to the idea of the story and the way SM wordedd it, i would admit the host was harderto write..i still wonder how SM was able to wriet it beautifully and make us understand as the same time!! i think it was sooo hard to write, especially when it's two people inside the same body and wanda has to control her responses infront of the humans... the host's idea was certainly more creative and better

Nophoto-u-25x33 and i've gotta add too...the host is very amusing because u can't decide to side with whom....wanda, the gentle soul, but a villian and an invader from the humans perspective, or to side with melanie, who is the victim, but doesn't really feel like that in the end, when she and wanda r soo used to each other it seems that each can take over the body whenever she would like :P which is not true

300942 I loved them both, although in a lot of ways I liked the Host more, it seems more realistic, even though both scenarios are completely unrealistic! The love between Bella and Edward is this amazing, all-encompassing, almost possessive love, which I feel is unhealthy, although a very accurate portrayal of high school relationships. Wanda and Ian's love seems more mature, it took time for both of them to trust each other and then eventually fall in love. I would much rather had Wanda and Ian's relationship than Bella and Edward's.

message 32: by Khadija

Nophoto-u-25x33 me too!! ian and wanda's relationship was waaaaaaaaay better than edward and bella's...even bella described edward as her addiction and she needed daily doses of him!! and i think edward and bella's relationship is a bit shallow...i know they care for each other and all, but what first attracted them to each other was the looks (or in edward's case, the scent), while in the host, ian loved wanda, the soul inside melanie's body, not the body itself...he didn't care in what way she'll get back to him as long as she does come back...their relationship is as u said, Corey, more mature, and based on really loving the other person from the inside :)

1308072 I think Twilight is better, but I loved The Host! When you first start the book, you can't predict the ending at all, which I loved. I also liked how you didn't know which side you were on (in the beginning) because you like Wanderer and Melanie.

Eclipse
Twilight
New Moon
Breaking Dawn.

1396160 I, literally, just finished the Host. I loved it! The one thing I wasn't thrilled with was the end. Too tragic, and now that I am familiar with her style, obviously the opening for another series. I read the Twilight series after they had all been published, so was able to zip through them. It will be very hard to wait for these!

1396160 Okay, I didn't realize I wasn't ACTUALLY finished! I saw a few blank pages and just assumed it was over. I liked the ending so much when I actually read the rest of it!!!! It will still be a good series, though.

389236 While neither the Host nor the Twilight series is perfect, I've enjoyed them both immensely. However, I think the Host wins because it poses far more interesting questions to the reader - while Twilight does have the moral dilemma of Bella's decision to become a vampire or not, I was frustrated that Meyer never truly explored it! Bella was so head over heels for Edward that becoming a potential murderer and never seeing her family again were only passing thoughts and not a true obstacle to her being with Edward. The Host, on the other hand, is filled with moral dilemmas about what is right and wrong and how to treat not only other humans but alien beings you don't even fully understand, not to mention the impossible love quadrangle(?) between Wanderer/Melanie, Jared, and Ian. The plot and relationships Meyer created in the Host were so satisfyingly complex (I love the part about Ian not caring about what host body Wanda took at the end, because like Wanda, I too thought that it was tricky for Ian to be in love with just her and not at all the body she's in), whereas Twilight's Bella/Edward/Jacob triangle never was much of a triangle since it's pretty clear that Bella is in love with Edward from the beginning and Jacob is not really an obstacle to her being with Edward, just a very persistant suitor!

Nophoto-u-25x33 i so wanna read more about the host, but i'm afraid that if stephenie wrote a sequel she will ruin it as she had ruined twilight after writing sequels for it. i loved twilight, but the sequels made me hate the whole thing soooo much!! so, if SM wrote a sequel to the host as beautifully as she wrote the host itself, then i would love it!!! but if not, i'd rather she leaves it alone...
