I didn't realise there were omnibus listings of these, but now I have I can reduce the number of reviews I make on this series by using the omnibuses.: Vol 7 - Al is lured into a trap and captured, can Izumi and Ed extract him from his situation? Vol 8 - Features the shocking emergence of Wrath! Vol 9 - The overall conspiracy becomes more overt, as an ally of the brothers is arrested for murder!
I struggle to ever go over Three Stars for this series the good is OK, the longform storytelling, the characters, especially the antagonists, the art is just so-so, am struggling to interpret the action scenes; still I am committed to reading it all.

Sheesh, lost this one for a while and finally it turned up! Considering it is a short compendium of three volumes, it was really good overall. Volumes 7 & 8 were somewhat tiresome and tended to pull the main plot threads all over the place. Volume 9 got us back on track with a focus on the brothers Elric, Winry etc. and got us back to the solid mixture of poignant moments and whimsy we’ve come to expect from this very unique series.

Volume 7 - The author really upped the ante on the stakes and intensity of the fight scenes in this volume. We also got some interesting world building by showing what creatures are possible through alchemy. Overall rating: 4 stars

Volume 8 - Wow, some really interesting and unexpected character backstory in this volume; it took me completely by surprise (though in retrospect the signs were there). Nice progression to the overarching plot, even though some of the characters introduced in this volume were pretty annoying. Also the bonus scene at the end about how the anime was made was really interesting; I didn’t realize the 2003 version was done before the manga was in such an early stage? How bizarre. Overall rating: 4 stars

Volume 9 - This volume was absolutely tragic and heartbreaking. Overall rating: 5 stars

Meet Barry the Chopper!!

Falman: "What about May 3rd, year 9?"
Barry: "That was Reynolds. I hacked 'im up behind the liquor warehouse in district five."
Falman: "August 29th, year 10."
Barry: "Hendrick. Said my meat was no good. Now who's laughin', eh?"
Falman: "January 5th, year 8."
Barry: "Lenny and Cynthia. Only time I've killed two people in one night. Good workout."
Falman: "What about the Gadriel incident on March 3rd, year 11?"
Barry: "I killed Gadriel on the 13th you idiot, not the 3rd! Beautiful full moon that night. The way the moonlight glistened in the pools of blood... You had to be there."

Such a romantic guy.

More of the same and, for the most part, that's a good thing.

In the middle, I (ever so briefly) started to fear that ... maybe it was too much of a good thing and that it was, as the say, about to jump the shark, but the ship rather quickly righted itself, and the author quickly restored my confidence ... and convinced me to buy the next installment, which I've already done.

And so, I'll keep reading, and the journey continues....

Al just runs the fuck away. I love him. No, Izumi, he was kidnapped! Go help him!

So Greed has some chimeras.

It makes sense that he wants everything, he is greed.

“Greed: And most of all…eternal life!”—Page 60

Wait so these sins don’t have eternal life? Interesting.

“Al: Well, that would be my big brother…but he’s…he’s gone.
Greed: …
Greed: Was that rude of me?
Some dude: Well, beneath that metal exterior he is just a 14-year-old boy. Kids that age can be sensitive…you know?
Greed: Sorry about your loss, kid…we cool?”—Page 71

Greed is apparently the best of the sins so far.

“Al: AHHHHH! TEACHER, YOU’RE HURT! DON’T DO IT!! DON’T DO IT!!”—Page 99

Al, you sweet, precious child.

The President Eye-Patch is here! In a Hawaiian shirt. But so is Armstrong so that’s fine.

“Armstrong: You, the stubborn owner of this butcher shop! Gaze up the true beauty of a State Alchemist!! CARVE THIS INTO YOUR EYEBALLS!”—Page 106

Oh my god.

Then Armstrong and Mr. Curtis have a muscle off.

You really can’t trust this because it’s a “fair trade” and if Greed really is greedy than he’ll want more information than he’s giving away. Right?

“Bradley: My orders were to kill everyone but the targets I specified. Stop showing mercy to the enemy. That’s why you’re never promoted.”—Pages 160-161

DON’T BE RUDE TO ARMSTRONG!

THE PRESIDENT IS ONE OF THE SINS! AHHHHHHH! Ohhhhh, that’s such a good twist. I’m gonna guess based on that stop showing Mercy quote that he’s Wrath?

“Armstrong: Our bottom eyelashes are identical.”—Page 184

Pfffffffft.

“Catharine: I…I like strong men like my older brother.”—Page 186

Denied.

“Al: I couldn’t help her…”—Page 225

Oh my sweet child.

“Bradley:…And I believe that he, and their teacher, might make worthy human sacrifices.”—Page 255

You are not going to sacrifice Ed and Izumi!!

So there’s sloth. Who’s in held captive by Lust and co.

Also, I called it! I knew that Bradley was Wrath!

The fuck is this? This is some East of West shit.

And Bradley/Wrath has children. That’s gotta be weird…I wonder what will happen when that kid finds out. Also does the father just never take off his eye patch?

Weird…girl looking for immortality. And she’s an Ed Fangirl.

Winry doesn’t know that Hughes died…. Does Al and Ed not know about that either?

Suddenly I really don’t trust Lin.

Why does everyone want to become immortal? Greed, May, and Lin. I doubt it’s that great.

So I guess that mine chapter wasn’t filler lol.

We’re all going to Central. This ending for Vol. 8 was super abrupt. Like it just ended on “we’re all going to Central” which wasn’t as good as the last ending where freaking Bradley was revealed to be Wrath.

Wait until Lin and Mustang meet.

Lin is 15 years old. Weird.

Aw, Mustang takes naps.

“Armstrong: Why, god, why?!?! Why must we continue fighting in this brutal war!?!!”—Page 408

BRB gonna go cry over Armstrong.

Havoc’s girlfriend is Lust.

Ohhhhh Roy lied about Hughes dying.

“Roy: …Who am I trying to kid? I’m just as much of a softie like the major is.”—Page 436

Yes you are. I think the books are hinting that Roy might be Pride or something but I don’t think so. He’s a good man.

ROY! WHAT THE FUCK!? When he finds out that he killed an innocent person.

HUGHES’S DAUGHTER RUNNNING TO THE DOOR AND THINKING WINRY IS HIM. END ME.

FUCK! GLUTTONY IS ATTACKING HAWKEYE!

Aw, when Hawkeye is in trouble and not answering Roy, he thinks about Hughes.

“One of Lin’s bros: First, you tell me…how many souls do you have inside you?”—Page 552

What? Also Envy gets a weird look. What does this mean???

Nooooo! You can’t end here!!!

I REALLY enjoyed this one. I really loved Barry and I can't wait to learn more about all the characters and see where it goes. Hoping to finish the series by the end of the year because I'm enjoying it so much! This might end up being the best Manga I've picked up this year.

Man the villains in this are so fun that I almost ALMOST root for them. And by villains I mean Greed. Everyone else can shove it where the sun don't shine.

A few of the fight scenes went a bit over my head, so this one doesn't get the full rating.
Nevertheless, I am still very exited to continue.

I love the story, the artwork. Didn't know if I'd like the omnibus versions because they're floppy and harder to read but it's so convenient and faster to read in one go. Just an incredible story that never gets old no matter how many times I re-read.

This manga is absolutely fantastic, fantastic plot and story, beautifully illustrated, lots of great and strong characters. I liked the fact that the author portrayed the female characters as strong, independent and think for themselfs Like Winry and Riza.

I feel like we’re really getting somewhere now. The stakes are higher and the story is getting so interesting. Now the whole 7 deadly sins thing makes sense… somewhat. It seems I was right about King Bradley, just not in the way that I thought? Armstrong is becoming my favorite character, which makes me feel like now that I say that, he’ll be killed off soon. I’m still so conflicted on Colonel Mustang, I don’t think he really charred that person, I don’t think they’re dead. Huge cliffhanger at the end! I wonder if May Chang is gonna show up and be a bigger part of the series, she seems like a badass. Also I can’t tell if she’s related to the prince or if it’s just a coincidence that they’re from the same country, I’m guessing it’s not a coincidence.

I'm finding it difficult to rate these 3-in-1 collections because they don't collect the entirety of individual story arcs which means that they seem to start and end in the middle of stories.

That being said, there is an excellent balance throughout the first nine volumes - action, drama, humour, romance, suspense. It's really quite excellently done.

This latest collection features one of the best chapters yet (to be cryptic, the introduction of Wrath).

I love Greed so much, definitely one of my favorite characters! I also really like the three new travelers from Xing, the cast is growing! I love how the story brought back the Hughes tragedy and what happened to him, always building upon previous events. The characters are just so strong in this manga, mind blowing.
