Mia, the only surviving half-breed between the light and dark Fae. She has had assassins on her tail for centuries and has never trusted anyone. When she meets a group of vampires in a resistance against ones who would see their way of life destroyed, she is intrigued by their group dynamic as it something she's never experienced. Then one of the group members, Roddie, takes a interest in her and she is almost helpless to resist. It becomes a battle between her heart and her head, with neither having a clear lead. Her instincts have kept her alive all this time, but what is life really worth without love?
Mia is one heck of a damaged character. Considering her past, this comes at no surprise. What amazes me is her strength and ability to survive against all odds. Her instincts are incredible, but it is because of those instincts that she has no friends nor understanding of companionship and love. What I loved most about this book was getting to see Mia grow and learn to accept others being close to her. I think she will have a greater appreciation for those relationships as she went so long without them, and she knows just how miserable and lonely that is. At one point in the book she seems to be almost amazed at her feelings, as she never really understood what she was missing before Roddie and the others came into her life.
I absolutely loved the dynamic between Roddie and Mia. Despite her being so "flighty" and skittish, Roddie falls almost instantly head over heels for Mia. Mia on the other hand, kept him at arms length for a very long time. I'll admit the slow progression on her side was a little frustrating as I was reading it because I knew the two would have great potential, and I couldn't wait for them to finally make some progress. However, despite that frustration, the slow progression made the romance more realistic as someone with her past would have a very hard time accepting feelings for another person, let alone even beginning to trust.
I really enjoyed this book. The setting is parallel to the world in her other novel, Stealing Time (Review). The same style and happy progression of romance found in Stealing Time, follows this book as well. There were plenty of tender moments as well as some pretty steamy ones, and she did an excellent job in balancing those two aspects. This author is definitely one to watch for as her books are very rich and leave you with a sense of happiness, yet still manage to leave things open ended enough to make you more than ready for the next book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys flawed, but strong heroines, sexy heroes, and romantic happiness with plenty of danger in between. This book was a perfect blend of those aspects and I cannot wait to dive into the next book.
I read a rew. from this author a day or two ago and loved it,so I clicked on her page. While I scrolled, came my epiphany-OMG!These little pictures mean that this smart lady is an author! So i rushed (as much as my firefoxs allowed me) to get something of hers. So, I got this book. The first question is- Why is she not famous? The truth? I don't know. She is a very skilled writer with a wicked imagination. But still, I don't know. I will have to read more. The book it self was good. The storyline was palpable, but not a big bang. But I liked it still, and I do not like books easily. It all has potential. If you did not have the chance so far-read it now. Again, why? The penning was practiced. It was refined and mature and I pictured a woman that knows what she is doing. That is crucial in an author because the story has a course that does not drift with unnecessary detail. Her sentences are lucid, strong, the descriptions palpable and even more importantly they are genuine. I could picture them. This is overlooked a lot of times. I say this is a delightful book and a fast read that has a plot which keeps your mind going. So,I'm giving it 4 stars. Yes, 4. Maybe I am romanticizing the author, and in that course her literature, because she has good taste and opinions as a person. But I would still give this high rating. So,just tray reading it!
An added on P.S. I just realized that i have finished this particular peace in under 3 hours.So...yeah,I was right.4 stars!
Mia has survived by trusting no one and fighting her enemies. Mia is a half breed. half light and half dark fae. she was brought up by a catwho is more then he seems to be.
Mia is thrown into a fight helping vampires but when the vamps want to know more about her she panics and ends up shifting places and gets her and one of the vamps stuck in a different place. while they work out were they and how to get back her and the vamp grow close and work together but when her guard is down he decides he likes what he sees and imprints with her.. Mia has to learn to trust him and deal with the imprint to fight the evil that is coming after her and the evil of her past. that is none other then her father.
This story has lots of action and lots of moments to make your heart swoon. you feel like your on the journey with Mia as she comes to terms with the love she finds in Roddie and the trust he has in her. I have to say I really enjoyed this story. the plot was amazing and kept you interested, I all so found that there were so many funny bits that I sat giggling to the book like a little school girl. I think most of you will enjoy this story and I think for you who are unsure should give it a try.
I won a copy of this book through GoodReads First Reads Giveaways, in return for an honest review. Here goes...
I think this is a clever take on the Vampire Genre, mixing Vampires with Danger, Supernatural and Romance! I really enjoyed being caught up in the world the mysterious alternative world Ms Paige created. I hope there are more books coming in this series.
Plot Summary: This story is the sequel to Maelstrom, and is told in the POV of Mia, a fae born from a mixture of light (Aeolin her mother) and dark Fae (Dark Fae King Cham Reiden who is her father). Mia has the ability to shift to planes across the planet and has been on the run from Reiden's assassins ever since she escaped the underworld where she was thrown by her psycho father.
She has learned from birth that she was different and that nobody really cared for a redheaded half-breed. Mia survived the centuries by trusting nobody and by pounding the bleeding hell out of her enemies. She has enough Bolt-holes across the globe, that she can disappear in a seconds notice.
Then she meets Roddie, an Irish immortal vampire with the skill to dodge even her most lethal attacks and he changes her whole world. Intrigued by the spirit beneath Mia’s warrior exterior, Roddie resolves to recruit her for a new, cross-supernatural alliance--the Vampires' last, desperate bid to avoid extinction. Trained solely to fight, Mia is defenseless against the Irishman’s flashing blue eyes and killer dimples. And despite herself, she begins to consider a life that includes love.
Trouble is, softening her hair-trigger reflexes could get her and Roddie both killed. But this time, Mia can't do her usual disappearing act. This time, she has to make a stand, and face her father's brutality and her own tortured past.
As we pick up the story, Mia's guide, an oracle named Bakis, has transported Mia to Dallas, Texas where she witnesses a bodach attack on a group of vampires and a single fae female. (Amalie, Nick, Roddie, Burke, Siri, and Win). We last saw this group in Maelstrom having decided that they needed to enlist the help of each and every vampire they could find in order to stop Pascal and Reiden's dark alliance. She jumps in and helps them escape, and ends up joining them on Amalie's Texas ranch.
Bakis also has plans that he refuses to tell Mia about that are all about her future and the end of the Reiden reign of terror. Even when he supposingly dies, he's keeps his visions to himself.
***Here's where I had a DOH! moment. The names of six new vampires that Amalie and group find in Dallas are Joshua, Emma, Trip, Levi, Jake and Phoebe. (Phoebe is a newly turned vampire/changling). They are very similiar to those in Stealing Time**<--read the book! I can't spoil either story by saying anymore. It wouldn't be fair to anyone.
This is definitely a love story, with lots of action and some surprises, not unlike Maestrom. In both stories, you have a vampire who meets and falls in love with a beautiful Fae female who has some issues that she needs to resolve. Neither Amalie or Mia have had the perfect upbringing or existence. This time it's Mia and Roddie's turn. Ms Paige interweaves a decent plot line with a romantic entanglement to make this a very appealing story to anyone who follows the PNR genre. Plus, she throws enough comedic moments to make things interesting for the reader.
The twists and turns and the ultimate battle to kill Reiden will keep readers on their seat and remain interested in the story until the very end. AND, you have a major HOLY CRAP moment right before Bakis comes back from the dead and transports the entire group into Reiden's castle for the battle royal. The heartbreaking part was that not everyone survives until the very end.
The characters are very likable, yet far from perfect. The relationship between the vampires and the two fae females was not over the top. Obviously, Ms Paige knows all about Friday Night Lights in Texas as she interweaves this into her story. Mia's reaction was really funny and not that far fetched for anyone who has no clue what Football is about.
Tangled Threads by Jennifer Estep Paranormal Romance - April 26th, 2011 4 1/2 stars
Tangled Threads reads a bit like a comic or graphic novel. With captivating super heroes and heroines to root for.
As the forth book the series, Tangled Web is a bit of a transition book. The heroine’s name is Gin and she is an orphan with powers to control stone and ice. Gin inherited, the restaurant the Pork Pit from her mentor. But he also secretly mentored her as an assassin for hire. Gin was known as the Spider before she retired. Recently, she has come out of retirement to combat the town mob boss, Mab Monroe. As the Spider she is giving Mab a lot of trouble. As a result, Mab has hired an exclusive and highly priced assassin named Elektra LaFleur to get ‘take care’ of her.
This was an exciting book because it was interesting to read the interplay between the 2 assassins and the difference between their personalities and how they ‘work.’ It was like two cool opposing forces playing cat and mouse. This series is supposed to be seven books long so since this is the forth book, the author continues to give the reader tantalizing clues to Gin’s tragic past. Mab was responsible for the murder of most of Gin’s family and this book reveals the anguish Gin still feels about this terrible time in her life. This story also is very emotional as Gin tries to make a connection with a sister who does not know who she is. Although this book was full length, it was so fast paced I felt it was over before I began. As usual, the best part about this series are the wonderful characters and Gin herself. I can’t wait for more.
Tangled Threads was a fun action packed read. This series has grown and so has the endearing cast. A guaranteed winner.

Set in the same world as Stealing Time, but a seperate series Shadowplay is an action packed paranormal romance centering around a dark Fae named Mia. Mia is a half breed- half dark and half light Fae. Her father also happens to be the ruler of the Unseelie Court- and he doesn't have any kind of paternal feelings for his only surviving daughter.
She spends most of her time avoiding the Unseelie assassins sent by her father to kill her. When she finds herself accidentally caught up in a war between Vampires she doesn't imagine for a minute that she would find friends, or love. But she soon finds herself entangled with Roddie, a vampire who is determined to show Mia that there is more to life than pain and simply surviving.
There are plenty of fight scenes interspersed with the developing romance between vampire and Fae to keep things moving along at a comfortable pace, and by the end of the book, friendship and love are not the only things that Mia has gained that she thought impossible before.....
Another excellent story from a new author that I hope to see much more from in the future.

I usually am not into this kind of story ( Featuring Fae) but I fell in love with the cover and the story sounded intriguing. So what the heck! The story was easy to follow and a quick read. The characters had great depth! Oh...and the sex scenes were steamy =)
This book pleasantly surprised me. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and hope to read more from this author. The story was easy to follow and a quick read. The characters were well defined. There was a good plot. I enjoy books where there is angst and pain. This covered every painful experience a female would never wish to go through.
