Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.
Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.
He turned toward the other three beds and knew what he'd see. Empty, as they'd been for four nights now, the covers pulled tight, the boys gone, never to return, leaving him behind, alone. He didn't mind that so much. Being along meant there was no one to corner him in the play yard, snap at him, claw him, bite him.
I love how I got to be apart of Derek and Simons journey before they were brought to Lyle House. And finding out about Derek before he became apart of the Bae family. It was truly heartbreaking to read about what had happened to him before. It truly crushed my heart. Such a big strong person who was once a small scared child.
The beginning was interesting showing 10 years into Derek's past. When it showed the lab in the Darkest Powers series, made me wonder what occurred there, and how was Derek's childhood. It was great to see how Derek was when he was younger. I also got to see more how people saw the werewolves from a werewolf's perspective.
It was refreshing seeing Derek's point of view. Not that I mean Chloe's perspectives are bad. It was just very entertaining to see things from another person's perspective. I liked seeing how people saw Derek, even though I already knew. It was also appealing to know what Derek is thinking because he usually likes to keep his thoughts to himself and doesn't really show his emotions on his face. It is also intriguing to know what he thinks about others. It was also great to know more on how Derek is with his family and what he thinks of them. I also liked knowing how Simon was and how they both were treated in school I know I already knew the story, however I wanted to know the whole story, and I'm glad I was able to hear it. It was better to know it from the actual person's experience instead of hearing from others. It was also interesting to know what happened afterwards, the part that was not told in the main story; however mad I got. All the parts were pretty interesting having those extra parts that were not written in the other book.
However, in the later half Even though the later half might not have been so great, still interested in knowing about the parts that were left out in the main series.
This is part of Kelley Armstrong's free online fiction. The stories can be found here.
This story explains how Derek and Simon's Dad disappeared, and how they wound up at the Lyle House. It was interesting and written well for such a short story. It was good to hear more about Derek as he is my favorite character so far in the Darkest Powers Series.
YEA - I really enjoyed this book. It's nice to see that I was right. That there was more to Derek than just a glower and a scowl from the get go.
I loved the background info. It was really good to see the whole landscape of the world we're thrown into. From the Summoning, you kind of just get the violence ramped up on you from nowhere. Don't get me wrong, I like my YA violent, but it's good to see that the sinister plot began long before we met Chloe.
I do hope at sometime we learn more about the Cabal. It's been more mentioned than anything else.
I absolutly loved this novella! when i was reading the darkest powers series i always wondered how Simon and Derek got to Lyle house and also wondered about their background. i loved loved loved that it was in Dereks point of view because he was my favorite character by far in the darkest powers series. Even though this book is so small i wish i could get it in book form and not only online that would complete my collection. :)
Now this story is a really long one, with sixteen chapters in total. It is in Derek's point-of-view, with the first chapter about his life as one of the werewolf subjects with Edison Group. There was a glimpse of Derek and Simon's high school life, to their journey on the run when their dad disappeared. Finally, they ended up at Lyle House, which puts it near the start of the main series. You can already see that Derek was already quite the loner since he was little. His growth spurt, acne, and body odour problems after puberty certainly did not help things, as he was constantly singled out by authoritative figures as a delinquent and a troublemaker. Unlike Simon, who had an unending string of girlfriends, Derek was not winning any popularity contests. He also had problems controlling the wolf in him, which landed him in problems numerous times. He felt guilty about being a burden to Simon and their dad because of it. Also, like with the main series, Derek could win championships with the amount of brooding he churned out. I like how this story gives us a view of Derek's life with Edison Group, which was quite interesting. The brotherly relationship between Derek and Simon was really sweet. They may not be brothers by blood, but it did not make their relationship less real than any pair of biological brothers. While Derek constantly felt guilty of the problems he land them in because he could not control the wolf in him, Simon and their father never blamed him. However, reading of the way Derek was judged and treated for his appearance was heartbreaking, although it does explain his personality. This story is the chance to truly get to know Derek, and contains scenes of important events, so fans of this series would not want to miss it.
I really enjoyed reading this from Derek's POV. It was really cool to see how they came to Lyle house and how they got separated from their dad.
It was also nice to see how Derek hurt that kid. I can't believe the boy had a knife and was a repeat offender and yet Derek was the one in trouble. I hate when people are biased like that! Just because he looks mean people don't like him!
I'm starting to be really concerned about their dad though. I'm on the last book now and I really hope he isn't dead. That'd be really sad. :(

2.5 Stars. Interesting, but it didn't come across as Derek's unique voice - I kept thinking it was Simon narrating and had to remind myself multiple times, especially at the end.
I can never get tired of this series, I feel like every time I read something I learn more and this book is no exception! learning more about Derek's past broke my heart and reading about what happened with the kid he thew made feel worst, especially knowing how that still haunts him. can't wait to read all the other novellas.
„So, are you going to the semi-formal?“ the blonde asked. „Yes, Simon is.“ „I didn’t ask-“ „I was taking the shortcut. Now can I go?“ „Tracy’s right. You are a jerk“. „Yep. Now…?“ I motioned for her to move aside. When she didn’t, I tried to pass. Again, she cut me off. I felt my hackles rise. Instinct, as the wolf in me said I was being threatened. I told it to shut up. It didn’t. It never did. „Right,“ I said. „I forgot the second part of your unasked question. Is Simon going with anyone? The last time Simon didn’t take someone to a school dance was seventh grade, when his date got sick. Okay?“ „Who’s he going with?“ „Some girl.“ „That’s a relief,“ her friend muttered. “Could you be more specific?” the blonde asked. “No, I can’t, because I have no idea who he’s seeing right now.” “Jealous?” I snorted and tried, again, to pass. She slied in front of me. “Is it Adrienne? Lily?” “I only know he has a date, meaning he’s not available. Try the Christmas formal. I’m sure he’ll have broken up with her by then.” When she still didn’t move, I eased back and looked at her. “Simon’s got someone. But you asked if I was going. Actually, I am, and I don’t have a date yet, so if you’re interested...” The girls scattered like deer hearing a shot. I smiled. Worked every time.
Derek is a werewolf who spent the first five years of his life in a research facility. He started out with three other werewolves but when the others attacked a nurse they disappeared. The only other child he sees is Simon and when Simon’s dad offer to take him home Derek jumps at the chance. Ten years later Derek, Simon and Simon’s Dad have lived under various aliases, always hiding from Simon’s Dad’s former employers for reasons they don’t understand. When Derek severely injures a boy attacking Simon with a knife and makes the news it’s time to move again. But Simon’s Dad doesn’t arrive to pick them up at the appointed time and when they return home he’s nowhere to be found. Strangers are tracking them and they need to leave, will they find his Dad or will the strangers catch them first?
The short story is a mix of a distant third person and a first person narrative from Derek’s point of view. I’m not a big fan of short stories because there’s just not enough there for me which is a lot of the reason I didn’t give this the best rating. Despite its length the way the points of views are divided, the first portion told in the distant third person portraying Derek’s childhood in the research facility followed by the first person narrative then years later, actually works well. The beginning is distant but chilling and you can’t help but feel for the little boy. The second half you feel bad for Derek and how he’s treated in the school environment, but events after that happen so face it’s hard to read become attached to the characters or the story. One issue I did have with this store is that the description of the fight scene doesn’t match up with Simon’s description of the same events in The Summoning and I personally feel Armstrong is an experienced enough writer that she should be making attention to detail mistakes. However the story is definitely fast paced and combined with other series novels it does enhance understanding of the character in the series, but by its self because it’s so short it’s a little lacking.
Derek is decently developed as a character in this story, but secondary characters are mostly told about rather than having their character traits shown due to space. You know enough about the character for them to be distinctive, but not enough to become attached. Derek’s character however shows some decent development in the story offering pieces of him that we didn’t get to see in the series.
Overall if you’re planning to read the Darkest Powers Trilogy I’d definitely recommend this short story, but if you’re not there’s not enough of the short story to hold interest as a standalone title.
Derek Souza is a werewolf. After his brothers are taken away, Simon Bae’s father takes him in. However, when Derek accidentally hurts someone, they have to go on the run again. Though, this time will be different when their Dad suddenly disappears. What will happen to them now?
Since I have already read the books in the Darkest Powers arc, I decided to re-red it along with the free online short stories. In the books, you really don’t get to know the thinking of the other characters, except for Chloe, so I’m grateful for these short stories. For a short story, it has a good amount of descriptions and growth. I also like how you get to know Derek and Simon better in this story than in the books/series. Also, these events happen before Chloe goes to Lyle House.
Though, overall, it is a good short story to get to know other characters and information that is never really explained in depth in the books. It was more interesting than the books/series.
Also, please note, this is a review of the free short story. It is no longer free online since it will be published in a book along with the Divided and Disenchanted short stories.
I really enjoyed this story. Mostly because it was told in Derek's point of view, and it had more of a logical flow to it, whereas Chloe's perspective in the actual trilogy had more of a scripted, movie feel. It was well written, and less action packed than the trilogy, but I think that helped it, rather than hindered it.
After reading it, I felt as though I had a more thorough understanding of both the boys, and their father. Considering how little time Kit Bae spends within the trilogy it was nice to actually have a few scenes where he's a constant. The little time in this short story gave me enough of a feel for him to understand the desperate search that Simon and Derek are on. I can understand why, and I learn that yes, their father would be a very useful asset for them. It isn't just because it's their father. He is necessary for their survival. He has the experience.
But this was also an entertaining story on its own. I felt as though I could've read this before the trilogy and not missed out on anything, which is excellent. And I found it to be a nice length. It wasn't too short, but it didn't go on forever either. I would definitely read this again.
Reading this made me realize how much I miss reading about Derek, Simon and Chloe. I couldn`t wait for teen supernaturals to meet up, so finishing this short one while reading The Rising kind of help me to cool off a bit..
The story was about how the boys; Derek and Simon came to the Lyle House, pre-chloe meeting. Their dad was missing and the police were swarming after them when a student went to coma after being thrown by the young were. The charges were dropped however, but something else cropped by. The Cabals. and they were looking for two supernaturals boys.
So the story was told from Derek`s point of view.. I remembered reading Derek`s pov in the past book, but I didn`t quite enjoy it..But this time, Derek was as awesome as he could get..The writing was smooth and it was quite action-packed with all the running and walking they did..What more was that from this book, I could really see how Armstrong wanted us to see Derek as.
This story tells how Simon and his dad "adopted" Derek, who spent the first 5 years of his life in some sort of institution with other child werewolves. Life hasn't gone smoothly with the family moving suddenly and changing identities when needed. When the boys father goes missing Derek thinks the institution is to blame and are looking to bring him back.
I'm looking forward to reading more of the boys in the rest of the Darkest Powers books
I love Derek and Simon! Hearing things through Derek's voice was nice. Was interesting to get into his head. I feel for the guy, he's been through a lot. Their brotherly bond is endearing. I also love their dad! A single father doing a great job with his boys. I want to know more about everything that's going on. The story keeps getting deeper and deeper. The mystery of the father's disappearance, who he worked for, them hiding, and being pursued. Can't wait to get to the rest of the series to see what happens.
This was a great prequel to book one. You really get to know Derek and Simon.
I love the Darkest Powers series and when it came to an end, all I wanted was more, more info, back ground knowledge and just fore the story to continue.
These bonus packs do that, and I really enjoyed hearing what happened to Derek and Simon before they came to Lyle house. I felt really bad for Derek, all he waned is to keep Simon safe but everything just seems to hit him back in the face. But he is intelligent, and has kick ass wolf senses that see them through.
Overall I enjoyed these short stories that give readers more back ground knowledge.
Ah, Derek! Ah, Simon! Boys, you so lovely, how I have missed you two. I must admit I missed the girls (Tori even more than Chloe, shockingly), but I enjoyed this so much. Derek is the only tortured soul I actively care about, and I love his relationship with Simon so, so much. I love their flaws the most. Stupidly eager to take the blame for each other's issues, oh boys.
This author makes me drool. I love the twists and the scenes and the dialogues, and the ending, although it being a sequel was predictable, was still a sucker punch. Loved it.
Even just the prologue of this book helps you understand Derek so much better, the prologue also made me want to go back there and give that little boy a hug. I think this book just offers an understanding you can't fully grasp from only reading the main series. We also get to meet Simon and Dereks Dad who though talked about constantly but we don't really see much. I liked the chance to see some of the main points before the story began. I would reccomend reading this novella after reading the Summoning if you haven't read the series before.

Paranormal, ebook. About Derek and Simon on the run with Simon's dad. Derek's a werewolf that was in some kind of a lab/home and was rescued by Simon's dad but for that reason or one of his own they're always on the run. Trouble happens and Simon's dad is missing. The story ends kind of abruptly to me. I'm feeling like this is either part of a larger story or just an idea the author was tooling around with. It was good and I would like to read the rest.
I enjoyed seeing from the point of view of Derek. After reading the trilogy, it was something I always wanted to see. I feel this short story answers some of the questions that I craved answers for like for example, Why derek acts the way he does. What had happened to his 'mates' when they were at Edison and How they ended up in Lyle House. So I am happy I read this because of a Goodreads challenge.
It was interesting to see the progression of the story in how Derek and Simon came to be at the Lyle house but other than the little bit of filler in on a basic plot I did not find the overall story to be that interesting. Not a story or perspective that I was absolutely dying to read about.
