The exciting conclusion to the Gold & Silver arc. All of our favorite characters, past and present, get together to go kick some butt and save the day. Not much of a spoiler, since this is Pokemon after all.
There were a few moments that surprised me. Some directions I wasn't expecting, some battles I wasn't expecting, that kind of thing. There was also a large amount of set up that I didn't even notice, but I'm sure if I look back through previous volumes, I'll see all the foreshadowing.
Over all, a pretty good conclusion to the Kanto and Johto stories. It felt a little overstuffed with battles, but it kept moving, even if I had some battle fatigue at the end. If you're an old school Pokemon fan, I highly recommend Pokemon Adventures... even if the Viz editions has some weird censoring.
I wanted to love this one because Gold/Silver were my favorite Pokemon games. But they just tried to crammed so much into this...they kind of followed the plot of the games but then also tried some original things but it just got so messy in their shoving it into the formula. The big show down of gym leaders meant nothing in the end. Celebi makes a very last minute appearance. Red also was kind of a fan service cameo and declaring Gold the Hatcher was just silly. The Masked Man's identity is revealed and his plot ends up being less than sinister and just sad. And actually ridiculously obvious but I guess this series is intended for children.
So this was a disappointing follow up to the original arc of the series. I think I'm in the minority though with this series but overall just felt frustrated with the lack of direction these took.
Very good finish to the arc (happily had version where it all ties up in this volume, rather than carrying on into vol 15 that it does in other versions). Felt like a bit of fan service in there, but in a good way, and one scene put me in mind of Avengers Endgame. All up some quite thrilling battles going on here against the big bad, and we get to see all different characters get to shine, as well as seeing their different strengths and weaknesses. A good, satisfying finish, so will be interesting to see how the series goes from here.
The reveal about who the Mask of Ice was just OK as I am just getting tired of the villains being Gym Leaders or Elite Four members. Also nice to see the connection between Silver and Green as well as their backstory.
This is a review of Pokémon Adventures Volumes 8-14 (Gold/Silver arc). I thought Yellow’s arc, which served no purpose, was bad, but this one felt way worse which I’m sure stemmed from the fact that they gave it far too many volumes. Gold/Silver was all over the place. First we were supposed to believe that Gold was the main character but he wasn’t really present for a good chunk of the story and when he was, he didn’t really have a purpose. At times he was straight up unlikable. I wanted to know more about Silver, who was far more interesting. It’s in this arc that we continue trainers now having gimmicks which started with Yellow and the fishing rod; Gold uses a pool cue and Crystal kicks her Pokéballs. I don’t understand why they felt the need to add these, what’s wrong with just throwing a Pokéball like a normal trainer? And further on in the arc, they bring in Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow, which was just unnecessary and felt like fan-service. Focus on the new characters so you can flesh them out better! Once again there were no gym battles and we fairly flew through the Johto region route so we could get to some half-baked story with the ‘Masked Man’ and ‘capturing time’. I honestly couldn’t have cared less about his identity which felt like they were hinting at who it was the entire time only to decide it was someone else that made no sense and the stupid way they tried to explain it! And don’t get me started on the horrendous way they pulled in the legendary dogs and Ho-Oh and Lugia. And then to have the last few pages have their dialogue directly pulled from the games? What were they driving at??!!
But the worst part had to be that there were some really good nuggets in the Gold/Silver arc, just buried deep in there. I did like the discussion about how gym leaders are some of the best trainers in their region and it’s very difficult for trainers to earn the badges at all the gyms. The idea of having gym leaders face off against each other in exhibition matches was great, I only wish it could have been longer (they get to use 6 Pokémon but if they lose even one the match is over?) And here we began the discussion of how each region doesn’t know about the evolutions and types of the other regions and this is why Professor Oak is so adamant about having trainers fill out Pokédexes! Why couldn’t they have built on these ideas?
Overall, this arc left my head hurting. I only completed it because I was already so far in and was hoping that it would turn out better. Guess what, it didn’t. Gold/Silver/Crystal got 7 volumes, much longer than the two previous arcs yet there was far less story here. Many story elements that were brought up in the earlier volumes were left hanging and never fully explored or explained. The story in the Johto games is far better and is far more fun. Do not read this arc. After Yellow and Gold/Silver, I’m left wondering what the arcs after these hold in store…
My Pokemon manga journey is now over with the conclusion of volume fourteen. I set out to finish the series through Generation Two, which corresponds with my childhood love for Pokemon. The last games I played were Generation Three, but it was never the same for me as the first two were. Maybe I’m right, or maybe it’s just me and nostalgia, but I feel that Pokemon peaked here. Of course, I know next to nothing about it after my childhood so what do I know?
This was a pretty good conclusion to the second arc. I loved how it included all of the original trainers, Red, Blue, and Yellow, with Gold, Silver, and Crystal. I loved the artwork and felt that it perfectly captured the mood of the story. The story its elf was meaningful and poignant. I give it four out of five stars because I thought parts of the story felt confusing and that the series was never able to recapture the magic of the original volumes one through three.
I’ve come to like manga, and I look forward to mixing more of it in the future.
So first of all: this whole series was a nostalgic reread and I actually kinda love it as much as when I was 12. especially Green and Yellow were really well written characters! however, I definitely forgot how unhinged some moments were. Conversations basically went like this:
Will & Karen: *know that Green has massive trauma and want to use her triggers to keep her from fighting* Green: nice try, but I did TRAUMA THERAPY (btw why are Blue and Gold the only characters without childhood trauma?)
Or something like this:
Silver: *crying like a dog because his best friend Gold just sacrificed himself* Blue, after fighting in his team for 2h: wait a minute… aren’t you the guy who broke into the laboratory? YOU’RE GOING STRAIGHT TO JAIL WITH ME
also, for Pokémon being for children, a lot of people and Pokémon died in those volumes…
I have a lot of gripes with this series that I feel are fairly justified and valid.
This volume does not avoid many of my critiques - cringey humour, nonsenical leaps of logic, “magic” rules that seem to follow mostly whatever the author needs for the plot. Most characters are too threadbare and slight for their motives to be clear. Bad action.
And yet… I will say, despite all of its faults, this volume did feel sufficiently grand for a conclusion to 3 series’ characters’ worth of stories (though I’m sure we’ll see a few again eventually).
4/5 - Or maybe I’m just glad to be taking a break from Pokemon Adventures and reading something else for a change. Maybe.
Words cannot describe how amazing this volume is! It is the best manga volume I have ever read. I recommend reading this series just so you can read this volume, because it is THAT good. This is also better than any piece of Pokemon media that I have read or watched. This is what the Pokemon movies should be, because it's just absolutely nuts! I was so not expecting this to end the Gold and Silver arc!
Awesome finale of the entire story arc 👏. It was both funny and sad at times and kept me entertained all way through. The last volume added a deeper meaning to the entire series. At times like this I really understand why books aimed for children are also fantastic to read by adults. We can have a moment of reflection to think about what's important to us. Let's see how the next story arc goes. :)
I'm really happy with how they finished up this one!! The battles were fun, and the art was great. The twists did sometimes surprise me, and I was glad to see all our heroes together!! Let's goo~~ I love Pokemon, and I love this manga series- give it a go!
(This book contains an emotional plot, violence, as well as an awkward accidental butt-touching scene. I would give it an age rating of 8+)

This was the best volume of the series so far. At first I was a bit annoyed by the “reveal” not being all that revealing, but I got over it. The world was built out a lot in this arc, and in a way that lays the groundwork for future stories really well, with old and new characters being incorporated nicely.
An absolutely fantastic ending to a great story! From start to finish, meeting the trainers and the Pokemon, discovering the legendary Pokemon, and the intriguing story lines were wonderful, and this is one story I can say it was an absolute privilege to read.
Phew, that were a lot of characters! It was sometimes hard to keep track of all of them, where they have been and what they have been through. The last arc though, they all went through together! And it was awesome! It is so sad to see why Pryce did what he did, and eventhough he is the antagonist, I am glad to see he found a resolve.
The first 3/4ths of this book essentially cram every character you've met in the previous 13 volumes into a single fight sequence. Even though it's cool to see how they've all evolved, it's really overwhelming.
The ending itself is solid and puts a nice bow on the Gold & Silver adventures.
That was a FANTASTIC conclusion to the entire arc! Everyone has a hidden talent and a purpose in their lives. I really enjoyed it from the first page of this volume. Also, don't underestimate someone's strength by their age. Tee-hee! ;)
