The wysard Ryel leaves the great Art-citadel Markul to rediscover the long-lost spell that will release his mentor's spirit from the wraithworld of the Void, but a malignant sorcerer likewise imprisoned has enlisted the aid of Ryel's strongest rival to find the spell first. Amid dangers, joys and temptations, Ryel discovers unlikely allies to help him in his quest, and learns that he may well gain all that he wishes...although perhaps not as he wished it. Wysard and its sequel Lord Brother have been critically acclaimed as lyrical, exotic, archetypal tales of love and magic - fantasy at its highest and most heartfelt.
I'm an eternal learner, and constant explorer. For me, existence is an endless search for all that is best in life. One of my favorite quotes is Tennyson's "I am a part of all that I have met," and everything that I am finds its way into my writing.
Please note: The revised and expanded 2013 and 2014 paperback and ebook editions of the Ryel Saga duology (WYSARD and LORD BROTHER) supersede all previous versions and should be regarded as the standard texts of the books. Thank you!
This book is very well written and visually beautiful. Though there are dark sides to the world, the beauty always shines through. For this reason, I actually found it a little cloying at times, but I did become very involved with Ryel's journey and plan to read the next book. Written by the wife of my graduate school advisor, this is a fantasy book that is both dark, and original. I enjoyed being on of the first people to read it.
Carolyn Kephart's tale is one of bitter strength. Half the joy is the writer's ability, the other half the imagination of the writer. An engrossing read by a very talented writer.
I am very glad I found this author, I really liked this book (please note: I give 5 stars to only the greatest books, Tolstoy, Dickens, so a 4 star is a very good grade.
I'm with Geoffrey -- am enjoying the setting and characters. My only disappointment: realizing that I have in my hand not a standalone novel, but only part 1 ... time to locate part 2.
