The Pokémon Gym Leader Exhibition matches have begun. Meanwhile, the Masked Man is plotting to invade the stadium with Team Rocket. The powers of good and evil are about to clash.
Will the Trainers be able to join forces, or will Team Rocket finally have their victory?
That was so amazing and fun! I enjoyed the battles against the gym leaders a lot. Plus, the Masked Man became even more mysterious when he transformed! I'm excited to read the conclusion of this arc!
If there were ever a time to indulge in the battle aspect of Pokemon training, this is it! And Volume 13 does that… mostly? It’s okay? There are some neat displays of personality and style from the different trainers and it’s… fine. I don’t know if I’m reading it wrong or if there’s genuinely something missing (or a mix of both) but these battles just feel lacking in the hype and surprises of the best tournament arcs in manga, even when you can clearly see the elements imitated here.
The gym leader battles take up most of the volume, and still they lack sufficient focus and attention to bear the weight of what’s suppposed to be a momentous occasion in-world. And the battles are really… basic? Nothing displayed really screamed ‘These are some of the most accomplished pokemon trainers in the world!’, it was just… really mediocre.
The main plot is also coming rapidly to a head, and the building sense of tension and dread is neat, but I also just… don’t care. I don’t think this series has given sufficient reason to justify its own plot.
Maybe this series just isn’t for me.
3/5 - The main villain’s goal is the dumbest thing in this series so far, and it’s at the top of a long list.
I'm a long-time Pokemon fan, I've loved it my entire life, and this book was quite fun!! I liked seeing the battles between the gym leaders, I found them interesting-and I really want the secret of the masked man to be revealed! Who is he?!! We've had to wait so long..!! Not to mention, I love Green and Silver a lot. Whenever they come into the story, I'm so happy, so I really loved it when they got some time to shine. Reading this kept me very entertained!! They did really well with this one.
(This book contains fantasy violence, as well as a short scene where a teen girl is bathing in a river, and a slightly younger boy happens to go in the same river to bathe as well- without knowing that she is there. She stands up and he turns away, and she is censored, so nothing is seen. Not too bad. I'd give this book an age rating of about 7+)
I was kind of disappointed with how the arc with the Legendary beasts turned out and I really wondering why Gold is even a main character since he really has not done anything in most of the story. The only thing he has contributed is helping Silver who by far has done more then Silver and he actually deserves to be more of a main character then Gold. Also the fights between the Gym Leaders should have been longer as it is a cool idea but most of them barely take like five pages and most of them we only see a few panels before the battle ends.
So this one just continues the exhibition matches. I literally finished this a day ago and that's all I remember from it. Crystal and Gold are still looking out for the Masked Man who does pop up and gets the gym leaders on a magnet train out of there but I don't think anything else happens. Or anything that I could recall. The Johto Journey wraps in the next volume...hopefully the conclusion is decent.
Another good volume here, as it closes towards the finale of this arc. Some cool matches between the different Gym Leaders, allowing us to see just how strong they are in their various fashions. A bit wider cast in this one, with the gym leaders as well as Gold, Silver, Yellow and others also making appearances and joining together. Good read.
This was pretty good: the action was intense and the characters found themselves in sticky situations, but now thinking back and comparing the Johto series to Kanto, it's not as fantastical and amazing (in my opinion!). I am very invested in the story of the Masked Man however. One more until Hoenn... This should be good!
There are a little bit too much characters to remember, but besides that this was great! Its action packed and fast paced! Just the way I love it :) The Kanto vs Johto battles were great! And the ending with the masked man using Ho-Oh and Lugia was brutal. Can't wait to read vol 14 to know how the Gold/Silver arc ends.
The penultimate Pokemon story (for me). This was better than the last, as the story finally begins to come to a dramatic close. I’ve enjoyed this overall, and I’ve loved how the Gen 2 story has remained fresh while tying in old heroes and villains. I will give a more formal and detailed review when I read the last one.
Johto is by far my favorite region, not because of the Pokemon necessarily, but because of the gym leaders and the connection between the two. This didn't disappoint.
The disappearance of Silver was annoying, and I don't quite see why gym leaders should catch the legendary beasts. But the big gym leader tournament is cool.
