"Love in my world usually ended up with someone hearing 'I smite thee!' as she was cursed to be some lame flower for the rest of her life."
For three years, Alexandria has lived among mortals—pretending to be like them and trying to forget the duty she'd been trained to fulfill as a child of a mortal and a demigod. At seventeen, she's pretty much accepted that she's a freak by mortal standards… and that she'll never be prepared for that duty.
According to her mother, that’s a good thing.
But as every descendant of the gods knows, Fate has a way of rearing her ugly head. A horrifying attack forces Alex to flee Miami and try to find her way back to the very place her mother had warned her she should never return—the Covenant. Every step that brings her closer to safety is one more step toward death… because she's being hunted by the very creatures she'd once trained to kill.

Daimon is the greek word for demon. You can understand where this is going.
While Daimon doesn't add much to the story, it's a fun introduction to Alex's character and the events that took place right before Half-Blood! (that's right, I read it afterHalf-Blood. I strongly advise against it, because I didn't appreciate it as much as I should).
Q: Even in the normal world I hadn’t stopped doing stupid things. Actually, I was prone to random acts of stupidity. I considered it to be one of my talents. (c) Q: “Whatever! Go save a dolphin or something!” ... “It’s a whale, Alex, a whale! That’s what I’m interested in saving.”... “What’s wrong with saving dolphins? (c) Q: Well, they kind of needed to help each other off the ground. (c) Q: “You’re not a weirdo, baby.” I gave her a droll look. “There’s a statue of Apollo in our living room. And come on, I’m not even the same species as them.” (c) Q: Great, I thought, I’m being robbed by unorganized criminals. (c)
I picked up this novella because my friend Mer said I needed to read this series. So of course I wanted to start from the beginning. I found myself unable to put this short story down. I listened to the audio copy via my library overload app. The female narrator did an amazing job keeping me believing the entire time the heroine was her. The story itself is different and interesting. Really looking forward to continuing the series because that ending had me wanting to know what is going to happen to Alexandria...is she going to get out alive or what?!!! ughhh LOL
Swinging with all my might, I slammed the bottom of the lamp into the daimon’s head. The sickening thud it made pleased me in a way that would’ve concerned guidance counselors across the nation.
Addicting!!
I picked up the Daimon prequel in anticipation for the Half-Blood ARC I’ll be reviewing soon and WOW! What a great kickoff to a series I know is going to have me on the edge of my seat. Definitely a storyline I can fall into with a great cast and a perfectly crafted paranormal element.
The writing is exactly what I look for in a series, it’s edgy, sharp, and full of wit. The main character is crazy awesome. What’s not to love about Alexandria Andros?? She reminds me a ton of Rose from Vampire Academy with her badassness that comes out full force when she lays the smack down on baddies. This girl knows how to fight and survive, and I can’t wait to jump into this series to experience her journey.
Daimon is the prequel that sets the stage for the Covenant series and in this installment we meet Alex who is a half blood that was initially not worthy to train at the Covenant to serve the children of the gods. Alex and her pure blood mother fled the Covenant three years prior and have been in hiding and on the run since. That’s until a daimon attacked her mother and forced Alex to flee in search of the Sentinels and Guards she’s hoping will take her in.
Definitely want the next book NOW as I can’t wait to see what happens next. Exciting!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My notes about the book, not part of my review: Hematoi or Ministers are pure blood spawn of demigods. They have startling eyes and can command one of the elements. They are protected by the Guards or Sentinels, but must not interact with each other.
Guards or Sentinels are trained to fight at the Covenant in order to protect the purebloods from the daimons.
Daimons thrived and fed on aether which is the essence of the gods and the very life force running through them. They are disguised by glamour and were once purebloods who have turned their back on the gods.
Note: Info on free ebook download link for this story below. A lot of authors release short stories as prequels or companion novels to their series, usually to keep fans jazzed between books or to entice you to try out the others. Some of these small bites are more successful than others, and I'm happy to report that the taste readers get from Daimon is enough to whet the appetite for more.
Alex is a 17-year-old half-demon who has been living among humans with her mother for three past years. She doesn't know why they're hiding from The Covenant, but a brutal attack by relentless daimons forces her to go on run...possibly back to the very place her mother always told her they should avoid.
This fast-paced, well-written short story does a great job of setting up the series. Alex is a smart, likable heroine with some mad daimon fighting skills. I really liked the action sequences in this book, as well as the way that the author shows the closeness between mother and daughter. (Ice cream always helps.) I got a little confused with one of the flashbacks, however, since it suddenly mentions a boy she's yearning for who hasn't been referenced before--I had to go back and skim through the book again to make sure I wasn't missing anything! But it's a small quibble considering how solid the rest of this preview is. It looks like this is going to be a really fun series and I'm looking forward to Half-Blood, which comes out on September 15, 2011.
Incidentally, contrary to what I assumed, Jennifer L. Armentrout is not the alter ego of urban fantasy author Jennifer Armintrout, who wrote the Blood Ties series. But readers who enjoy the other author's work will probably enjoy this YA series as well.
It's been a while since I read the covenant series, so I decided to give this a whirl. It's a prequel novella of Alex and what she was up to before the events of Half-Blood. I enjoyed it, it's a fun bonus read but not necessary to read as a part of the whole series.
Daimon is the prequel to the Covenant series by Jennifer Armentrout. I have been planning to read this series for such a long time so I am finally taking the plunge and if this is any indication as to what to expect, I’m in for a wild ride.
Alexandria or Alex, is 17 years old. She is a half blood. Her mother was a Pure but her father was a mortal. She and her mother lived at the Covenant where she was trained for what role she would someday fulfill until suddenly, at age 14, her mother took her and fled. She never knew why, but for the last three years she and her mom had lived among the mortals in Miami, Florida. Alex never really did fit in even though she did try. Until one morning when her life was changed forever.
Daimons hunt Pures. They want the Aether from their blood. They usually aren’t all that interested in Half Bloods since their blood had such a smaller amount of Aether. Alex, who is 17 now, is on the run, on her own, trying to find her way to the nearest Covenant. But the Daimons are after her. She has no one. If she disappears, no one would even miss her.
This is a short story introducing us to Alex. I was blown away and can’t wait to delve deeper into this world. What Alex has already been forced to endure is breaking my heart. So, on I go to Half Blood.
Despite my deep and abiding love for all things Jennifer L. Armentrout, there was still one of her series that I had yet to start. I changed that over the weekend when I picked up the prequel to the Covenant series. This was a super short (60-something pages) introduction to the series but was still packed with plenty of action. It's interesting getting familiar with the world and the mythology of a new series. I've never read anything based on Greek mythology so the gods and demigods, etc are all new to me. I've seen some reviews that take issue with the series because apparently (at least the start of the series) is very similar to the Vampire Academy. Well, guess what... I haven't read the Vampire Academy series so any similarities will go right over my head. (Look at that, a little bonus to being behind on my TBR.) I enjoyed this one enough that I immediately picked up the next book, Half-Blood, and I'm excited to see where the series goes. Plus, I'm a sucker for JLA's male characters and I've heard plenty about Aiden and Seth. So let's be real - I'm way excited about meeting them. *cue the heart eyes*
Incep prin a specifica faptul ca nu cred ca s-a publicat inca in Romania, eu am citit-o in engleza. Toata seria contine 5 volume principale si doua secundare: 0.5 Daimon ** 1 Half Blood ** 2 Pure ** 3 Deity ** 3.5 Elixir ** 4 Apollyon ** 5 Sentinel
Apar si niste zei, chiar si titani, super interesanta cartea, chiar daca pare o povestioasa adolescentina eu o recomand si adultilor.
Not bad. Good enough that I am willing to try book 1. Not my preferred genre so I don't know how far I will get. I am not a super fan of the heroine but willing to give her more time to mature.
My mini-review can also be found on my blog Collections.
I wanted to read Jennifer L. Armentrout's Covenant series because I loved the covers. I went into this prequel novella not knowing what to expect but hoping that I would find the story to be just as appealing as the covers. I'm glad to say that it was good. REALLY good.
Looks like book one, Half-Blood, starts off right where Daimon leaves off, so I highly recommend reading Daimon if you want to have an idea of what the Covenant series is going to be like and if you want a quick introduction to the heroine of the series Alexandria Andros. I think it's a great start, and I cannot wait to read more!
I read this book after I read the entire series and that probably wasn't a good thing. It would have helped lead into the series but whatever, I read it after. It was still good but it was a left many things unclear. I don't know if that's just because it was a hook into the first book or if it just seems that way to me. This book is a good way to see what happened to Alex and what she is like instead of hearing the about everything that happened later.
I felt so bad for Alex. Glad I've read this novella before continuing with the series. This shit was fucking intense, it didn´t add too much to the series, but I think it adds a little to Alex´s character and shows us why she is like that. Some scenes were so heart-breaking, though the rest of the book had a pretty intense and "desirable" atmosphere for me to read, if that makes sense.
If you are a fan of the Covenant series, I really recommend you this read!
