Susan Lillian "Sue" Townsend was a British novelist, best known as the author of the Adrian Mole series of books. Her writing tended to combine comedy with social commentary, though she has written purely dramatic works as well. She suffered from diabetes for many years, as a result of which she was registered blind in 2001, and had woven this theme into her work.

They have lists for sexy people and influential thinkers, but I've never seen one for funniest person on the planet. Maybe because Sue Townsend would win it, hands down, every time. These are the adventures of Adrian Mole, prolific author, frequent layabout, raiser of children, inexplicably attractive to a bevy of beauties. Together, they also form an act of British history, from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair. I shudder to think of being cornered by Adrian at a party, and being lectured by him on the Norwegian leather industry. But once you hear Adrian's voice, you'll never forget him.
