Inspector Rebus #3-4

Tooth and Nail / Strip Jack

Rate this book
Tooth & Nail
They call him the Wolfman - because he takes a bite out of his victims and because they found the first victim in the East End's lonely Wolf Street. Scotland Yard are anxious to find the killer and Inspector Rebus is drafted in to help. But his Scotland Yard opposite number, George Flight, isn't happy at yet more interference, and Rebus finds himself dealing with racial prejudice as well as the predations of a violent maniac. When Rebus is offered a serial killer profile of the Wolfman by an attractive female psychologist, it's too good an opportunity to miss. But in finding an ally, he may have given his enemies an easy means of attack.

Strip Jack
Gregor Jack, MP, well-liked, young, married to the fiery Elizabeth - to the outside world a very public success story. But Jack's carefully nurtured career plans take a tumble after a 'mistake' during a police raid on a notorious Edinburgh brothel. Then Elizabeth disappears, a couple of bodies float into view where they shouldn't, and a lunatic speaks from his asylum... Initially Rebus is sympathetic to the MP's dilemma - who hasn't occasionally succumbed to temptation? - but with the disappearance of Jack's wife the glamour surrounding the popular young man begins to tarnish. Someone wants to strip Jack naked and Rebus wants to know why.

I’m aware of Rebus but have not actually read any of the books featuring him. So why not start with 3&4 in the series 😂 These stand really well on their own, I didn’t feel in the slightest that I had missed any of the back story. There was a small reference in the 4th book back to a detective he met in the 3rd but that was it.
In the first of these two stories Rebus is sent to London to help with a serial killer who takes bites out of his victims (I’ve read another book recently with a similar theme). It was a well thought out storyline and I didn’t guess the who done it which is always a good thing.
The second story Rebus was back on his home turf and I found this one more difficult to get into. It seemed much lighter in comparison with no grit, it got better as it went along and turned out into quite a complex story.

In Strip Jack Ian Rankin gets into his stride as a crime writer. This is more accomplished than the first three Rebus novels. Rebus's character is more rounded and there are twists in the plot right to the end. It is useful although not essential to have read the first three novels to understand the references to some of the other characters.

Tooth and Nail & Strip Jack by Ian Rankin

I love Rebus, and it wasn't until I was reading two murder mysteries side by side that I realised how much a better writer Rankin is. Not only were the plots excellent, but Rankin injects little thoughts from Rebus that make you smile, even if you've just been faced with a bloody body.
The first book, Tooth and Nail was the weaker of the two. Rebus had been called down to London to help George Flight with a serial killer. Although it was good, I prefer Rebus in his own place, because something felt missing.
Strip Jack was brilliant. Rankin juggles a lot of characters but makes it easy for the reader to follow them all, as always, the ending is a surprise and every word is perfectly written!
