Written in 1886, it was a peek into 19th century elite and effete rules, regulations, and limitations of female life. Good lord, what a tedious and restrictive life. It made me really appreciate being a south coast Calif Indian woman in the 21st century. Storyline: beautiful writing, interesting and believable characters, the female author gave us a seemingly authentic setting.
I found an old copy, an original print bc of its binding and the thickness of each page. I learned a lot of French, Latin, and German colloquialisms; that was fun. Easy read, not too intense, positive ending.
