A fast-paced thriller and a hard one to lay aside. Rick and Ginny's story is truly enjoyable, and I really liked that they are both Christians. The villains keep you guessing to the very end; you might think you have them pegged, and suddenly something else pops up. I'm definitely planning to read the other two books in the series soon.

Just finished Deep Cover, and really loved it. What a fast-paced, exciting, romantic story and awesome, fresh writing,

The story opens with the crack of a wooden beam and the hero, Rick Gray, dropping ten feet to the floor. The plot continues with the pace of a bullet, only slowing down for some really sweet and tender romance.

Rick Gray can’t tell Ginny Bryson that he’s really an undercover cop and is acting as her uncle’s foreman only to reveal some nasty things about her family. Ginny wants to believe that Rick is an honest man, that he really cares about the group home her uncle is building for the mentally challenged like her little sister, Lori. But Rick’s secrets keep coming between them, and she’s not sure who to trust.

Ginny’s family isn’t perfect, but they are so beautifully written, so real. Great characters—good ones that you will love, and villains that you will hate.

An extremely enjoyable and fast read which I highly recommend.

Sandra released her first novel in September and I wish I could tell the world to go buy it. (Actually, I blogged about it at http://walkrightinministries.blogspot... so that's my best attempt at "telling the world!")

Deep Cover is only Sandra’s first novel. Her publisher has already purchased two more — with one scheduled for release in March 2012 and the third shortly after that. Such a commitment to a writer speaks volumes of their confidence in her talent and messages!

I could hardly put Deep Cover down and was restless to blog about it right away! This story is true to its label “Christian suspense romance.” Sandra does a fabulous job of developing characters and portraying realistic and creative adventures. I was impressed with how much “homework” she must have done in order to capture the essence of main character Rick Gray’s life as an undercover cop.

But what touched me the most was Sandra’s portrayal of Ginny, the heroine of the story. Ginny is the older sister of a young women with cognitive disabilities and the daughter of a recovering alcoholic. Ginny bears much responsibility as it relates to caring for her sister and she does so with great compassion, commitment and love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It has hard for me to read about Ginny sometimes as I found myself projecting my own daughters into that role with their sister Carly who is severely disabled. As my husband and I are feeling the ticking of life’s clock, our hearts ache at thoughts of how Carly will be cared for when we are gone. But I think they ache even more at the idea that two of our daughters will, in some way, share a heavy burden for most or all of their lives. Yet even as I watched Ginny function as caregiving sister with joy, I knew that my daughters would also consider it a joy and privilege to be Carly’s sister despite the burden it will often be.

It is the mark of great storytelling when we can readily place ourselves in the spot of fictional characters and have that experience move us, shape us, and enlighten us. Deep Cover helped me think through some things I don’t ordinarily spend much time thinking about. More than that, it got me praying more about things that need to be taken to Jesus. I’m so thankful Sandra’s book did that for me.

I hope you’ll look her up and buy her book. Deep Cover has a lot of important things to say to people in a variety of life circumstances. And besides that, it just plain entertaining reading! And who doesn’t need a great book to snuggle up with now and then?

Deep Cover will be a book you’ll want to take to the sofa next weekend and stuff into someone’s stocking for Christmas.

My rating is a 5-star. I'm not sure why it's showing as 2.

Rarely do I pick up a book to help myself relax before bed, only to see the breaking of day before I even put it down again. Deep Cover, the breakout novel by Canadian author, Sandra Orchard, was one such book to snag me in the middle of the short lived night.

Deep Cover surrounds the boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-meets-girl-while-he’s-pretending-to-be-somebody-else scenario that catches you from the very beginning. Rick Gray is an undercover police officer intent on nailing a crooked businessman responsible for his partner’s death. But this businessman is also the doting uncle of Ginny Bryson, the woman he’s still in love with, the one he let get away because his then under cover position prohibited him from telling her the truth.

This story shows a man and a woman of faith trying to love and trust as they each fight personal battles: she, strained and overworked having to do everything for her family by herself; he, battling fatal consequences of the past.

The first title in the Undercover Cops series, Deep Cover is a definite read, and the ideal lead of the anticipated two novels to follow.

Sandra Orchard has become one of my favorite authors with her Secrets of Aster Port series and the Serena Jones Mysteries, but this one definitely wasn’t a favorite of mine—eight of her other books have received 4 or 4.5 stars for My Personal Rating. The plot just seemed to jump around along with some head jumping. Ginny nor Rick were my favorite at any moment—Lori won that award! She was so precious. :)

Deep Cover is a great read. I love the male lead, Rick Gray. He's a
"real manly man with a sensitive heart." He has such integrity (even though he lives a lie) as he works so hard to take down the arsonist (working undercover, even from Ginny) and save the lives of those he loves, especially Ginny Bryson, who he has fallen in love with.

Sandra's fiction strong points: Characterization-her characters are multi-layered, good people who love the Lord, but struggling with hurts and secrets from their pasts. And realistic; I think you'll identify with them and certainly root for them to succeed.
Plot twists: just when you think the couple will get together (too soon in the plot) something separates them, usually their own feelings of mistrust of the other one and you want to knock their heads together and shake them....because you've already decided they should be together and are perfect for each other!
Villians: She's great at making villians, characters who weasel their way into the hero and heroine's lives, just to make trouble. And they can be so scary and almost win--I love Sandra's novels. Deep Cover (originally Shades of Gray[I'm her crit partner, so I get to read them early])is a wonderful story. One that you'll love loving the characters and seeing them get together, finally. (They are romances, after all). And she has three more coming! All with wonderful characters and great plots.

PS: We'll have to get Sandra to tell us about her experience at a police academy learning about cops and how they work! How fun that must have been! Sandra likes to experience what her characters experience so she can write about it realistically; how much fun would that be?

Blessings, Sandra! I know everyone will love Deep Cover and Rick and Ginny!

I really enjoyed this book. I usually have 2 problems with christian romantic suspense.
1. The chemistry between the characters. Many of them just feel like they wonder are in love right away without any of the chemistry that happens in real life. In this book I could feel both the chemistry and the love between Rick and Ginny.
2. Some of them feel like it's more of a sermon or lecture then a fictional book to be enjoyed. This book was able to inject the belief in God and scriptures in a tasteful way that actually added to the story rather then feeling like a tangent.
Ginny was so untrusting of Rick that at times it became frustrating and I wanted to shake her. Through it all though she kept going back to him bc deep down she knew the kind of man he was. I liked Ginny but I loved Rick. His character just won me over. Excited to try more of this author's books.

refreshing

The story was good the characters endearing. It was refreshing to read a romance mystery that also incorporated a belief in God. I do think the author laid in on a bit too thick though and made it too cheesy. If people are going to be encouraged to read more fictional mysteries like this the scripture quoting and references to God should be a bit more light and sporadic so as not to turn readers with thoughts of spirituality away. I believe the author wants to inspire these thoughts and encourage readers to believe that there are many more people of Faith in the world than the media would have you believe Also that there can be readable books of romance and mystery without blatant language and sex. Lighten it up a bit Sandra so you can reach more of the people who need these types of books even though they don’t know it.

It was a good book overall and it was a really interesting read (because of the plot twist). I didn't realize Mary had plotted something behind Rick's back. As for the characters, my favorite was Kim, Zach, and Lori. I hate how Ginny immediately judges people without making sure if it's true or not. Lori is very adorable, Kim and Zach are such loyal friends towards Rick. I feel neutral for Rick because he's either dumb or amazing (in some ways). I do relate to him about not everything's all about black and white sometimes you choose gray (whenever you're unsure) and how he's constantly lying towards himself.

I really liked the undercover cop story. This book, compared to other books she has written, is really heavy on God guiding them. I like the other books where it's more light on that. But the story was good, and it's a pretty quick easy read.

Rick Gray, aka Duke Black, is an undercover cop trying to bring down the man responsible for his partner’s fiery death. Little does he know that he will run into his old girlfriend in the process.

Ginny Bryson is the niece of Emile Laud, the man Duke is trying to catch and bring to justice, and Rick’s old girlfriend that he left fifteen months ago because he thought he needed to protect her. Little did he know the pain he caused when he walked out of her life so abruptly.

In Deep Cover, by Sandra Orchard, we are thrust into the dangers and mysteries of the undercover world of a cop and tossed into the middle of the love/hate relationship between Rick and Ginny. Despite all of Rick’s efforts to protect Ginny, she becomes caught up in the schemes of her uncle and is under suspicion of the police department.

Sandra’s story definitely intrigues you throughout the numerous plots, twists and dangers in the investigation. About the time you think you have the perpetrator identified, she tosses in another twist that throws you off-kilter. From the first page to the last, the action and suspense is palpable. Since I love the world of undercover cops, I was thoroughly engrossed in the details and circumstances.

Adding the romantic tension between Ginny and Rick was a fabulous way to not only expand the depth of the story, it brought out the true feelings and apprehensions of a touch-and-go romance. Does Rick’s involvement with Ginny blind him from seeing the necessary evidence in proper perspective? Sandra handles this aspect with the sensitivity of undercover operatives.

I enjoyed the characters of Ginny and Rick. Their relationship was so sensitive and yet abruptly harsh. Their faith is put to the test. Lori, Ginny’s sister, will capture your heart.

For a good romance-inspired suspense, be sure to pick up Sandra’s book!

Rick Gray had met the love of his life, until his profession came between them. Fifteen months ago he had lost Ginny Bryson. Ginny left him believing he was a gang member and he did not stop her, it was safer for her not to be around him. Now his job brought him back into contact with her again. As Duke Black he was now a foreman for her Uncle Emile Laud, the man they hoped to prove was a killer. Rick is an undercover cop, and Ginny says she would never marry a cop.

Ginny Bryson is the new PR girl for her Uncle Emile. He is having a group home built and her sister Lori will be living there. With mom's drinking and now having cancer, Ginny is looking forward to having help with Lori. She loves her sister so much but her sister with her special needs can be trying. And Ginny believes mom has started drinking again. The last thing she needed with everything else was to pull up to the home and see Rick Gray, the man she loved until she found out she did not know him at all. She did not want to see him or have him working on this home but even after he tells Uncle Emile he is a criminal and using an alias name to start over, her uncle wants him to stay.

Ginny starts having problems and threats and she believes Rick has brought it to her doorstep with his criminal past. After Rick's home is attacked he starts thinking Ginny could be right. He loves her but has promised his father that he would continue the battle to keep the bad guys off the street. Can Rick have the love of Ginny and keep his promise to his late father?

What are you doing here?

Ginny Bryson cannot believe her eyes. What on earth is her former boyfriend Rick Gray, now going by the name of Duke Black, doing here? He lied to her once – it seems like he’s still lying. Yet Rick only asks for a chance to start over. His tenderness to her and his gentleness to her mentally challenged sister softens her heart. But can she truly trust him?

As an undercover cop, Rick Gray couldn’t tell Ginny the truth about why a gang member had approached them and spoken to Rick with easy camaraderie. She figured he was a fellow gang member and broke up with him on the spot. He had let her, because if the gang ever found out he was a cop, she would be a target, and he couldn’t do that to her. But he never stopped loving her.

Now, here he is working for her uncle, again undercover, this time trying to prove her uncle’s guilt in the murder of Rick’s partner. Again, he can’t tell her the truth – not that she would believe him anyway. Only this time his silence can’t protect her, because someone is targeting her, wanting her to pay the price for her uncle’s crimes. Somehow, Rick is going to protect her...and at the same time figure out how to not get his cover blown.

A break-in, threats, arson, sabotage, revenge, murder, a handsome undercover cop...and rekindled love – a great suspense and faith filled story from Sandra Orchard. I’m looking forward to reading the rest in the series.

Ginny Bryson’s time—and salary—go to support her dying mother and her special-needs sister, Lori. When she takes on the public-relations role for her uncle’s new group home project that will house Lori, the last person she expects to meet is Rick Gray, the man who deceived her and broke her heart.

Rick isn’t even going by his own name now. He calls himself Duke Black and he’s the construction foreman at the group home building site.

What she doesn’t know is that Rick’s an undercover cop. He let her walk away before out of fear his enemies would try to reach him through her. Now he’s back in town to bring down her uncle for the murder of a police officer—Rick’s partner—as well as for insurance fraud.

How can he lie to Ginny and keep his cover? But she knows he lied before, and she thinks her uncle’s an upstanding citizen.

Deep Cover is Canadian author Sandra Orchard’s first novel, set in a small town in southern Ontario. Be warned, most chapters end with a hook that has you reading the next page before you know it. The pace is fast, the characters believably conflicted, and the writing strong with plenty of word pictures.

My favourite line: “Rick chewed on the inside of his cheek and Ginny could almost see the little mice racing inside his brain, trying to find a way out of this one.” (p.78)

Deep Cover is the first title in Sandra Orchard’s “Undercover Cops” series. The next book, Shades of Truth, releases in March 2012.

Undercover Cops
Book 1

This is an excellent book!!! I always wonder what it would be like to meet a guy, fall in love, then realize you have no idea who he is. Well, after falling in love with Rick, Ginny learned that he was the member of a gang - well, at least she thought. Then when he shows up as the foreman on her uncle's most recent building project, she's determined to expose him. But Rick has a mission. He's undercover to bring down her uncle!

Many good characters in this one. Ginny's mother is suffering from cancer. Her sister is mentally challenged and stuck in a child's body. Her uncle is a piece of work.

Rick has a great relationship with Ginny's family. He knows how to talk to Ginny's sister to calm her down and seems to be the only one to do so. He's very patient and loving and takes care of them all. We're also introduced to Rick's best friend, Zack who is a fellow cop. Also, Ginny's best friend, Kim, is also included in this book. If I'm not mistaken, book 2 has Kim's story and book 3 has Zack's story. Can't wait!

Rick did seem to make a lot of mistakes and bad judgments in this book, but I think the point is that he was too close to one of the main characters in the case, which is what caused him to goof off. This was addressed near the end of the story.

The ending was wonderful!

The first half of the book (read in the dead of night) was pretty good and this morning I finished the last half. Either the last half was not as good as the first half was or my enjoyment could not hold up/be sustained in the light of day. Either way, the second half was a bit disappointing.

I felt as I read that the second half had a lot of repetition.
Rick: "I love Ginny and wish she loved and trusted me and wouldn't out my identity. Once the case is over I will tell her who I am. I need to get away so she is safe. No, I need to stay glued to her so she is safe."
Ginny: "I am obsessed with Rick and he is trustworthy--surely--but just as surely not trustworthy. I am a pendulum swinging wildly from one extreme to the other and I am a basket case."
The self-thoughts just seemed to churn these same thoughts over and over for a hundred pages. The story and I could have done without it.

Also, the resolution of the book felt awkward, rushed and--to me--phony or not in keeping with the story and the characters.

If I hadn't liked the first half (4 stars) so well, this book would undoubtedly be 2 stars (only because I finished it) so by averaging those two "scores" this is rated 3 stars.

I liked it the bad guys lost and the lost got help.
Rick or Duke was undercover working construction on a group home. When he had a accident and found someone had cut the beams. His bossLaud. pulled him up.
Rick thought Laud had some of his business burned up for insurance money and his old partner Tom was killed in the last fire with two others.
Laud got his niece to do publicity for him but Duke knew her when he was on another case as Rick working with gang members and he broke off with her when a gang member saw them together.
Ginny was heart broken when she found out that Rick was a member of a gang and walked out on him. Ginny told her uncle that Duke was really named Rick and was a gang member.
Someone was targeting Ginny and Rick did not know if it was because of her uncle or because of his past from different cases. Rick was determined to protect Ginny her sister Lauri.
It taught that we should not judge by appearances a lone and to have faith and lieing was a sin.
I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from Sandra. Would love to see Zach have his own story.
I was given this ebook in exchange of honest review.

For a true romance reader, Deep Cover strikes a wonderful balance of suspense and romance. Between rooting for love to win and striving for justice to prevail you'll not want to say goodbye to these relatable characters. A great realistic suspense and a wonderful romance that is not without it's trials, keeping the pages turning at full throttle.

Deep Cover is an inspirational/spiritual based book, something I would not normally read, but it was written better than I expected & only occasionally seemed a little bit too "preachy" for me. Sandra Orchard can write a good story with characters you can empathize with. It is the first book in the Undercover Cops series of suspense based inspirational romances published by Harlequin.

Story line was good but predictable. In my opinion Ginny was a judgmental fool who needed a major attitude adjustment. Rick was a an undercover cop who has gotten lost in all the lies he has to tell in order to do his job. The story got a little preachy at times and this made the story hard to get into.

Good character development and believable plot. Without giving the plot away, I will say, I am always a little suspect when people are supposed to be blind to the people closest to them and/or be willing to have their eyes opened by a stranger. But the book is done well.

Very good religious suspense and romance. Rick and Ginny loved each other but he was unable to reveal to her that he was a cop undercover. The omission of truth regarding his profession led to the lack of trust in the relationship.

I loved Rick's back story, especially his reasons for becoming a cop. His relationship with Ginny and her sister Lori was both sweet and convincing. However, the end was a bit too "Gift of the Magi" for me.
