Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads' database with this name. See this thread for more information.

Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Once he decided on this direction he chose a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing — a curriculum in which one of his teachers was novelist Harry Crews.

After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars. In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. The magazine story also moved Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest papers in the country, and bringing him to the city of which his literary hero, Chandler, had written.

After three years on the crime beat in L.A., Connelly began writing his first novel to feature LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, The Black Echo, based in part on a true crime that had occurred in Los Angeles, was published in 1992 and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America. Connelly has followed that up with over 30 more novels.

Over eighty million copies of Connelly’s books have sold worldwide and he has been translated into forty-five foreign languages. He has won the Edgar Award, Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Los Angeles Times Best Mystery/Thriller Award, Shamus Award, Dilys Award, Nero Award, Barry Award, Audie Award, Ridley Award, Maltese Falcon Award (Japan), .38 Caliber Award (France), Grand Prix Award (France), Premio Bancarella Award (Italy), and the Pepe Carvalho award (Spain) .

Michael was the President of the Mystery Writers of America organization in 2003 and 2004. In addition to his literary work, Michael is one of the producers and writers of the TV show, “Bosch,” which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Michael lives with his family in Los Angeles and Tampa, Florida.

Several short stories about Harry Bosch. I'm reading them in the chronology of Connelly's universe which includes all his characters since they intertwine a lot.

11.5 - Christmas Even (2002) - Wow! 5 stars. This story should be read before Lost Light.

Stopping now until I catch up to the other 2 stories.

15.5 - Angle of Investigation (2005) - was excellent, if short. 4 stars because it was such a slam dunk. Actually, maybe that was kind of nice for a change. Sometimes the bad guy isn't that hard to find with new tools. This story really needs to be read in this order, too.

17.4 - Father’s Day (2007) - ugh. I'm a father, so this one was tough on several levels. 5 stars. It is best read in order since Harry's partner is different, although that's not a huge point.

Connelly, Michael - Reading Order based on the publishing chronology of each item, including short stories, which fits the internal chronology best. This list currently varies from the GR list due to that & including books that they don't, such as the Cassie Black book Void Moon. See my review of the first book in the series, The Black Echo for the full Harry Bosch Universe chronology. Here is the partial surrounding these stories:

09 - Void Moon (Cassie Black #1) (2000)
10 - A Darkness More Than Night (Harry Bosch #7, also Terry McCaleb #2), 2001
10.5 - Cielo Azul(2001) in Suicide Run, 2011 (HB & TM)
11 - City Of Bones (Harry Bosch #8), 2002
11.5 - Christmas Even (2002) in Angle of Investigation (2011)
11.6 - Suicide Run(2007) in Suicide Run, 2011 (was 17.5)
12 - Lost Light (Harry Bosch #9), 2003
13 - The Narrows (Harry Bosch #10), 2004
14 - The Lincoln Lawyer (Mickey Haller #1), 2004
15 - The Closers (Harry Bosch #11), 2005
15.5 - Angle of Investigation (2005) in Angle of Investigation (2011)
16 - Echo Park (Harry Bosch #12), 2006
17 - The Overlook (Harry Bosch #13), 2007
17.4 - Father’s Day (2007) in Angle of Investigation (2011)
17.6 - One Dollar Jackpot(2007) in Suicide Run, 2011

Book 14.7 in the Harry Bosch series.

Three very excellent Harry Bosch short stories.

The one thing all three stories have in common is that somebody dies, but saying that all three are very different.

Story 1. Christmas Even.
A burglar is found dead on the floor of the shop he is burglarising. There’s a lot of head scratching until Harry put all the pieces together. 4/5.

Story 2. Father’s Day.
A baby is found dead inside the father’s car. The air temperature is in the late 30’s. Was this a horrible accident or was there something more nefarious going on?
The father’s interview is a Harry Bosch classic. 5/5.

Story 3. Angle of Investigation.
A cold case, in fact it was Harry’s first murder case back when he was a still rookie in uniform. Twenty years on and Harry is reviewing this unsolved case. Looking with fresh eyes he finds something that the original detectives missed. It might be twenty years later but a killer is still a killer. 4/5.

Over all an entertaining 4 star read.

A MUST for Bosch fans

Three short stories, of which "Angle of Investigation" is the best. We get to see Harry on his second day in the police, as a patrolman, discovering his first murder. Very nicely done.

Father's Day was a bit too short, and cruel.

Christmas Even was nicely done, a bit clever, but also too short.

Quotes that show the true calibre of Mr Connolly's writing and insight into the human condition -

Angle of Investigation -
He knew that passion was a key element in any investigation. Passion was the fuel that kept his fire burning. So he purposely sought the personal connection or, short of that, the personal outrage in every case. It kept him locked in and focused.

But it wasn’t the 'Laura syndrome'. It wasn’t the same as falling in love with a dead woman. By no means was Bosch in love with June Wilkins. He was in love with the idea of reaching back across time and catching the man who had killed her.

Three Harry Bosch short stories set at three different times in Harry's long career. In "Christmas Even" a burglar is found dead in a jewelry store that he was in the process of robbing. In "Father's Day" Harry Bosch looks into the death of a young child left in a hot car. In "Angle of Investigation" Harry is working in the Open-Unsolved Unit when he runs across a case from 1972. A young Harry and his partner were making a welfare check when they ran across a dead body. The case was never solved. Now Harry gets another chance.

All of these stories were short but interesting. I would recommend them to any Harry Bosch fan. My rating: 4 Stars.

Много приятни криминални разкази, перфектно плажно четиво.

Хари Бош е главен герой само в няколко от тях, но си струва да се прочете всичко включено в сборника.

This short story collection was not as satisfying to me as the last one I read. I think that's because the first story dragged, the second one was pretty horrifying and very good and then the last story didn't make a lot of sense to me. The ending didn't work for me either.

"Christmas Even" (3.5 stars)-We have Harry investigating a burglary that ended up a homicide. A pawnbroker finds a dead body in his store when he opens it. This leads Harry and his partner, Jerry Edgar trying to figure out what happened. This all takes place the day on Christmas Eve which of course has everyone wanting to smack Harry since they just want to wrap the case up and head home. Throw in some jazz and the story was all over the place I thought. We also get some insight into why Harry likes jazz and look, I can't help it, I don't like jazz music. I have tried. I don't get it and Harry's love of it was always one of the most puzzling things about the character to me.

"Father's Day" (4.5 stars)-A young boy is found dead in his father's overheated car. Harry's partner Ignacio thinks that no matter what the father is liable for the death. However, once Harry starts digging her realizes that something else went on and we get a dark look at parenting in this one. There's a mention of a character from one of Connelly's other series so that was fun to read, but honestly this one wasn't that hard to figure out.

"Angle of Investigation (3.5 stars)-Harry is now working cold cases and goes back to one of his first cases where he finds a woman and her dog murdered in her bathtub. The case leads back a surprising person. I just have to call BS though on the resolution in this one. I really think that the story could have been set up a bit better. I also found myself getting annoyed with Harry in this one. He's paired with Kiz in this one and I find myself not missing this character.

Another collection of short stories about Harry Bosch consisting of three separate tales.

"Christmas Even" This is a case of a burglar who got killed during heist, and not just a heist but his third visit to a pawnshop during the the not-so-opening hours. This does somehow alerts Bosch's suspicions. And when he visits the appartement of the murder victim he finds a link to his past.
"Father's Day" Bosch investigates a young boy's seemingly accidental death and gets tangled up in his own feelings
"Angle of Investigation" This story starts with Bosch 2nd day on the job as a uniformed cop and his first dead body. The story then skips to Bosch last part of his career, were he works unsolved cases. Will Bosch finally put this case to rest and solve it after so many years.?

Three easy to read short stories of which the first and the last are quite well written and the middle one is somewhat forgettable. A nice collection to read while waiting for the next installment of Connelly his Bosch or Haller series.

I'm going to write a review of each of the three shorts contained in this collection.

Christmas Even: somewhere between 4 and 4.5 stars

This was a neat little story, interesting to see Harry partnered up with J. Edgar again. I enjoyed the casualness and moderate resolution to the tale and the seedy pawn shop backdrop.

Father's Day: 4.5 stars

This story I found really appealing because it framed Bosch's own fatherhood in a new light for Bosch readers. I dug the storyline and the killers' tale. This story slightly proceeds where I'm at in the Bosch Universe and introduced me briefly to a new parter of Harry's.

Angle of Investigation: 4.5 stars

This one was my favorite and took place chronologically right where I am in the overall Bosch Universe and briefly predates all Bosch stories, seeing Harry on day number two on the job as a boot. That was fun as hell. The story was also foreshadowed in The Closers, which was neat to see Connelly set up a short story in a novel like that.

These shorts probably wouldn't blow away a casual fan or someone new to the series, but for those of us invested in the long haul with Bosch and company, they are delightful little treats that tie up a lot of ends and make the novels fuller.

These are all good. Very short past Bosch tales. One of them goes back 3 decades plus when he was a rookie discovering his first "home call for missing person" dead body.

The one about the little boy was too obvious. To me it was. All three had little deep sleuthing skills required.

Entertainment for the Bosch lover crowd. 3.5 star but very short.

This book, first published in 2011, describes three investigations Harry Bosch carried out at different stages in his career.

In the first story, “Christmas Even”, Harry and his partner Jerry Edgar investigate a robbery at a pawnshop on Hollywood Avenue. The owner, Russian immigrant Nikolai Servan, has already had his shop robbed three times in the last two years. Detective Eugene Braxton from the LAPD has been investigating these robberies and is already on the scene, but this time is different. This time the burglar’s dead body is inside the building lying on the floor. He is dressed completely in black, has a ski mask over his face and a glove on one hand. Servan says when he opened his shop in the early morning hours, he discovered the body and immediately called police.

Braxton tells Harry this is the fourth time the shop has been robbed and each time the display case was emptied of the most valuable contents in the store. He estimates each robbery netted the man at least forty to fifty thousand dollars’ worth of goods, which is why he keeps returning. He never left any prints or ID and without significant leads the police had little to go on.

It is Christmas Eve and Jerry Edgar is anxious to get going, but Harry senses something is not right about the scene. He wonders why the man has only one glove on and where the second one is. Servan insists he always keeps the display cases locked, so the man must have used some kind of tool or picks to open them. But where are they?

Once the suspect is identified, Bosch proceeds to the man’s apartment and finds an old saxophone in the bedroom. The instrument brings back memories of 1969, when he was nineteen, in the army and a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Wounded from one of those trips down to those dark places, he was recovering on a hospital ship in the South China Seas. It was then he heard a man out on the ship’s deck playing a saxophone, music that soothed him.

After successfully completing the burglary investigation, Harry tracks down the owner of the saxophone and has the company of an interesting companion for Xmas dinner.

The second story, “Father’s Day” begins in the Emergency Room of a hospital where the resuscitation of a fifteen month old boy has failed. The paramedics tell Harry and his partner Ignacio Ferras, the boy was in full arrest when they arrived at the scene. His body temperature was 106.8 and they knew then the boy would not make it. The boy was handicapped, was blind and could not hear or speak. He had fallen asleep in the car outside the real estate office where his father worked.

Harry talks to the father, who tells him he got caught up negotiating a huge real estate deal, left his child in the car because he didn’t think he’d be long, but was distracted as the pressure to close the transaction with a sizeable payday, mounted.

The case brings Harry to confront his own behavior as he scrutinizes the decisions the dead boy’s father has made. Thinking of his own daughter in Hong Kong, he wonders if he could stand the same scrutiny he is placing on this father and those thoughts throw him off his game.

The third story, “Angle of Investigation” goes back to 1972 when Harry had just joined the LAPD as a patrolman. He had only been on the job two days and was being mentored by his training partner Ron Eckersley, a man eight years his senior. The two had been asked to check in at the home of Judith Wilkens, whose daughter in Philadelphia said her mother who lived alone, was not answering her phone. They entered the home to find the woman and her dog, bound and submerged in the bath tub. Someone had tied them up, held them down and drowned them.

At the time Harry did not have a role in the investigation, he was just a rookie patrolman. Without any solid leads those investigating the case got nowhere and it was eventually archived.

The time shifts to the present day as Harry and his partner Kiz Rider are working in the Open Unsolved Unit in Parker Center. Bosch is perusing the old file of Judith Wilkens, more than thirty years after her gruesome death. He is looking for a hook, some indication that present day forensic techniques might help solve the crime. As he reviews the file, he pulls three potential leads, three angles from which to investigate the murder.

This story shows Bosch’s determined step by step process and his single-minded resolve to solve a case. It also shows how just one mistake the killer made helped Bosch close the case.

Много приятна за четене книга. Разказите определено са силна страна на Конъли. Липсва я онази скучноватост на романите, усещането за прекалено разтягане на локуми и излишно задълбаване в несъществена психоанализа. Но тук всичко е чук. Евала :)

This short story collection that came out only as an eBook is better than Suicide Run, which I reviewed recently, since not only the stories are more interesting but also because it gives the reader a chance to get to know better Connelly’s detective Bosch.
In Christmas Even Bosch and his partner Jerry Edgar are called to investigate a not so common death. The scene of the crime, if ever there was one, is a pawnshop that belongs to a man of Russian origins. According to him his shop has been victimized by a burglar three times in the past and he’s quite certain that the dead man was behind those crimes. How did he get in though and what was it that killed him? Harry will get the answers to these questions with no difficulty at all. But now, and most importantly, he also has to find out who killed him. It’s Christmas Eve. All his colleagues are in a hurry to call it a day and go home, but he knows that he will never get peace of mind if he doesn’t solve the riddle. So he’ll start wandering from one place to the next, arresting people and posing questions until he reaches his goal. At the same time, the accidental recovery of a stolen saxophone will bring back to him memories from the Vietnam War and that’s exactly when one will be able to take a better look into his psyche.
The story in Father’s Day somehow reminds us of an episode of CSI Miami in which something similar has happened. A fifteen month old boy is found dead in his father’s car. The cause of death is heatstroke and now it falls to Bosch and his partner Ignatio Ferras to discover whether it was an accident or rule it a crime. The child was handicapped and in cases like this no one can be certain about anything.
Bosch takes a journey into the past in Angle of Investigation. The year is 1972 and he is just starting his career as a cop in the LAPD, when he and his partner-mentor Ron Eckersly are ordered to visit the house of a woman who, according to her daughter who lives in a different town, has been missing for a few days now. As it turns out the latter had every reason to worry since the two of them will discover the corpse of the woman in her bathtub along with that of her dog. That case has never been solved and now Bosch, who works along with Kiz Rider on the cold case division, is more determined than ever to solve the case and bring the truth to light.
Three nicely crafted tales by one of the best American crime fiction authors.

In my eyes, Harry Bosch symbolizes the best of what a police detective can be. Over the years, my admiration for this character has grown immensely – and I hope Harry never ages.
In these 3 short stories – at various stages of his career – we still get what Harry is about : A clever and instinctive investigator. A true fan is always happy to read new Bosch material, even if it comes in tiny morsels , like here.
The first short story – CHRISTMAS EVEN – Harry’s teamed up with his partner Jerry Edgar – so that’s story takes us back to a the 1990ies when Harry’s a detective III in the LAPD Hollywood division. They investigate a burglar killed in the middle of a heist.
The second short story – FATHER’S DAY – was more gripping. Together with partner, Det. Ignacio 'Iggy' Ferras, they are able to get a confession of voluntary neglect and manslaughter from a couple who couldn’t cope with a disabled child.
For the last one – ANGLE OF INVESTIGATION – Harry’s working the OPEN and UNSOLVED cases, being partnered with Kizmin Rider and trying to solve a 35-year old murder, one who takes Harry back in time, when he was first on the scene as a rookie.
Loved all the stories, as I listened to them via audible.com. The narrator, Lou Cariou (grandpa in series Blue Bloods) had to grow on me at first, but in the end, I thought he did a pretty good job.

Wow! 3 excellent short stories featuring Harry Bosch. I liked that each one took place at a different point in his career and he had different partners. People who have read his novels would appreciate it more. Father's Day really packed a punch, given current events of late. A must read for Connelly fans.

Harry Bosch 14.7 Angle of Investigation by Michael Connelly

challenging dark emotional reflective sad tense

Fast-paced

Plot or character-driven? Character
Strong character development? It's complicated
Loveable characters? Yes
Diverse cast of characters? Yes
Flaws of characters are a main focus? Yes

4.25 Stars - actually 4.33 Stars (add up each story rating/divide by three. Voila!

In all short story collections, I like to rate them in each story, then tally the total, and divide the amount of stories.

Story One - Christmas Even - 4.5 Stars
- Love these stories that dredge up memories from Harry's life, especially his time in Viet Nam.
- Also love the confluence of Jazz and a Mystery, which seems to go together quite well.

Story Two - Father's Day - 4.25 Stars
- I really thought this was played so well. The way that Bosch took the gamble, and how it paid off. So often, things like this don't.
- The ending was perfect.

Story Three - Angle of Investigations - 4.25 Stars
- Regrets and accountability.
- Love learning stories about when Harry was a Boot. Each of these stories give us a peak into the person that we are following at the present time.
- This one type of story had to be hard for Harry, but then again...it had to happen. Closing the loop.

Really am loving the Cold Case angle of this last story, but also how we are given the peak into who Bosch is and how he sees crime, and how to investigate it.

Really good book.

Another solid set of Bosch short stories from Michael Connelly. Each one enjoyable in its own way. The title story Angle of Investigation really stood out to me because you get to see rookie Harry Bosch in a flashback and it has Bosch's best partner, Kiz Rider, as a supporting character. These cases are more straightforward than the longer novels, but they give you more insight into Harry's backstory ad character.

I love Harry Bosch and all things in the Harry Bosch Universe. Now I will say that short stories are really not my thing but I enjoyed all three short stories in this book. There was a certain satisfaction to be had at the end of each story and maybe that is because I feel like I really know who Harry is.

I'd highly recommend this to all fans of this series.

This book has a small selection of short stories from across Harry's career. One was interesting because it was a rare look back at his early days before he was the seasoned detective. Another showcased an investigation that led toward a member of law enforcement while Harry was applying for more years after his official retirement. The last case was more of an art imitates life piece in which a couple intentionally kills their disabled son by leaving him in a hot car.
