Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

•Summary: This book is part of a new series that is based off of the original Nancy Drew series. In this series Nancy Drew, who is 10, and her two best friends solve mysteries together. In this book Nancy and her friends go on a vacation to Cape Mermaid. While there Nancy’s cousin tells her that a ghost haunts the cape. Nancy and her friends work to solve the case and find out if there really is a ghost.
•Evaluation: This short novel would be good to have in the library of a third or fourth grade class. The word choice is simple enough for students of that age to read, while there are still new vocabulary words for them to learn. There are a few black and white pictures that would help the students visualize parts of the story.

Discussion Questions:
•(Before) What kind of case do you think Nancy will have to solve this time?
•(During) Who do you think could be pretending to be the ghost?
•(During) What might Tessie and her friends be up to? Why?
•(After) How could Tessie and her friends make up for what they did?
•(After) What could have been a different solution to the case?

This one kind of scared my girls. It's about a ghost on Cape Mermaid and the girls trying to find out if it's actually a ghost or who is doing the mysterious things. I liked the way it worked out but it just felt meh overall.

Daughter gave this one four stars since it’s about ghosts and she doesn’t care for them . Nancy, Bess and George are out of town. Nancy forgets her clue book so she borrows another notebook from her cousin’s best friend and that is where she finds THE big clue. This clue helps her solve the mystery of the ghost of Rowena.

I like these Nancy Drew books that are geared toward the younger aged. It gets them ready for the older, thicker books which have great mysteries.
