I was so excited and nervous to come back to this series! Because, while I really liked Mika and Yu’s not-officially-a-date in the last volume (but, c’mon – Yu taking Mika to watch the sunrise on Mount Fuji and saying how he wants to make so many memories together that they won’t even remember this special moment when they’re old?!) it felt like the calm before the final storm…so I wanted to let enough new chapters accumulate that I wouldn’t be left on a terrible cliff-hanger!

Chapter 123 starts with Yu opening the door to his past that Mika has conjured up somewhere inside his mind.
[Yu]: It’s just the ocean. It’s hard to tell how far back in the past from just that. [Mika]: No, it’ll be obvious in a minute. [Yu]: It will?...[Pterodactyl]: KREE!
…
[Yu]: Did humans even exist back then? [Mika]: No. Not even close.
…
[Yu]: What the heck is going on with my past?! AM I DINOSAUR, THEN? AM I?!! [Mika]: On a mental level, probably. [Yu]: Hey!
This is frickin’ hilarious!

Then Angel-Mika shows up, alive and very androgynous-looking. They tickle a little lizard thing, which spits out a black cloud with an eyeball that looks a bit like the original homunculus from ‘Full Metal Alchemist’ (a resemblance that is on purpose, it turns out!), and it perches on their shoulder to go see “Father”. When they follow, our Yu and Mika find a whole city of angels – which means the whole “seraph” part of ‘Seraph of the End’ is finally getting explained!

Some of the most interesting moments (spoilers below, obviously!):

Angel Mika calls their homunculus “Yu”, which the First disapproves of. However Mika points out that Angel Mika is actually acting more like Yu, cheery and impulsive - or “dumb” as he describes it!
[The First]: When you name a thing, you could curse them with a heart…if they have a heart, they’ll be stuck with concerns and doubts. [Angel Mika]: Then why’d you name me Mikaela, huh? I’m your child. [The First]: To curse you, of course. [Angel Mika] (hugging him): Ha ha! Liar! I know you gave me a name cuz you love me!

[Yu]: Geez, did you see that? He’s like a cute little puppy dog. [Mika]: I’d never do anything like that. [Yu]: I wouldn’t either. [Mika]: I dunno. You do kinda get like that.
Yep. Around MIKA especially!

They learn that the First, Sika Madu, is the leader of the “satellite kingdom” of Earth, and that they are trying to store up photons to return to the sun, and God. Another angel, Paimon (who looks like the vampire Saito), refers to Angel Mika as an “experimental subject” – because angels are forbidden from creating life – and says they must dispose of it before they try to re-enter paradise. But it seems the angels, Paimon included, are afflicted by a plague…and the experiment was started to try and find a cure. Paimon argues to Bael (an angel who looks like the vampire Urd) that they’ll have to kill Mika to protect Sika Madu. But Bael says he doesn’t want to go to paradise without Paimon, and the king is trying to help as many of them survive as possible – so he’ll stick with Sika Madu, even if what he did is a sin.

[Yu: Hmm]. Who would you back, Mika? [Mika]: Urd, I guess? You? [Yu]: I think I would too. (Holds out hand). If we hafta die, I’d want it to be together. [Mika]: …It still makes you think. If I choose to take your hand, but we still don’t manage to save everybody – [Yu]: Just take my hand already. We can worry about the thinky stuff later. At least, that’s what I’d say! [Mika]: I can hear you saying it, too. I remember you shouting pretty much the same thing while beating me over the head. (High-fives him anyway).

So we are starting to learn about the First's origins and it does get a little crazy as we learn that Earth used to have a city of Angels and that Mikela was once the First's son/creation. We also learn that the Angels wanted to return to Heaven. It does get crazy and I hope we soon return back to the plot but I do wonder where they are going with this.

it's funny how they're acting like mika is just a realism focused grump and always has been as if vol 1 mika wasn't like all cheery and family focused while vol 1 yu was the loner

Finally we get to learn about the First's origins and bruh I am flabbergasted. This is so much information and it's so wild?? Like okay we getting creative.

Yu and Mika go back as far as possible in Yu's memories to find that there was an angel city 100 million years ago in the age of the dinosaurs.

There they follow angel Mika who was loved by his father, the First, but has a mysterious illness. It turns out he was created as an experiment to try to cure the illness some of the angels have. These angels have the appearances of some of the vampires but have different names??

They want to get to paradise but they cannot as long as angel Mikaela exists, as it is forbidden for an angel to create life.

Absolutely insane to get another set of two men who are 1000% willing and wanting to die with each other over anything else but here we are.🫶

As current day Mika points out, the angel Mika may resemble him but his personality is more like Yu. Meanwhile angel Mika has a giant eyeball he has named Yu following him around and his father disapproved of him naming the homunculus, as he might curse it with a heart.

I sure hope the creators know what is going on and where this is even going because goddamn my peanut brain is CONFUSED.

I can feel myself actively losing brain cells every time the two main characters speak. So that's not great.

This series is basically unrecognizable from the first 20 volumes. It derailed wildly around 10 volumes ago and it's gone so far, I'm not sure there's any going back now. The vampires have now become angels in prehistoric times and are neighbors to dinosaurs while living in sci-fi futuristic towers. I WISH I was joking but this is entirely literal.

Yu and Mika have lost any iota of personality they used to possess. Every conversation between them is so generic, I have honestly lost my investment in them entirely. The First's conflict is still vaguely interesting, but without the support of the main characters' arcs, I can't bring myself to care about him either.

The art is still solid, but the story is absolutely bonkers at this point. I have vol. 31 already out from my library so I may as well pick it up, but I'm not sure I want to continue with this series. It's clearly not getting any better, and the nostalgia I once had for it is waning.

La historia se está poniendo lenta...

Si bien ya desde hace unos capítulos está un poco lenta la historia, en este tomo, que al parecer el objetivo es mostrarnos el origen de los vampiros y Mika, la trama está interesante más demasiado lenta.
Nos dan mas información, más datos y personajes que nos plantan más dudas e incertidumbre y no hay respuestas o hechos claros. No voy a mentir, me desespera... Sin embargo, resulta lo suficiente entretenido y me gusta que Mika y Yuu están juntos y decididos a conocer su pasado y el misterio que conlleva para enfrentar el presente y poder mantenerse lado a lado y pelear unidos<3

Estoy impaciente por saber más y tener respuestas jsjs

Ich hab gefühlt nach einer Ewigkeit den Band gelesen, den ich noch zu Hause hatte. Ich finde es gut, dass wir jetzt endlich mehr zur Hintergrundgeschichte erfahren und wie Yu und Mika da mit drin hängen. Ich bin gespannt was da noch so kommen wird bzw. wie viele Bände es letztendlich werden.

Man explaining modern Seraph of the End is impossible. Like… geez. Kagami has fully embraced the mystery and the extensive lore for awhile now. It’s not too bad here but still a stark contrast from early Seraph of the End.
The Angel backstory is neat and interesting. But geez am I going to definitely forget this by the time I get my hands on volume 31. I guess Sika Madu has good intentions with creating a fake angel in Mikaela to help try and solve the Angel’s disease but with internal strife from the definitely gay duo of Saito and Urd with Saito being all like “Oh well if this is found out we’re fucked” and Saito being all like “But yeah but he has good intentions uwu.” The Angel’s seem to have a lot of interesting lore but we’re also 30 volumes in and the pace is already so slow that I fear this will only create more mysteries and lore that will take entire volumes to be explained like the rest of Seraph of the End.
