An avid reader of fantasy literature since age six, when she first made her way through The Lord of the Rings, Naomi Novik is also a history buff with a particular interest in the Napoleonic era and a fondness for the work of Patrick O’Brian and Jane Austen. She studied English literature at Brown University, and did graduate work in computer science at Columbia University before leaving to participate in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadow of Undrentide. Over the course of a brief winter sojourn spent working on the game in Edmonton, Canada (accompanied by a truly alarming coat that now lives brooding in the depths of her closet), she realized she preferred writing to programming, and on returning to New York, decided to try her hand at novels.
Naomi lives in New York City with her husband and six computers. Her website is at naominovik.com
When Captain Will Laurence aboard the HMS Reliant seized a dragon's egg from a captured French frigate, it is doubtful he could fathom how far and into what adventures that prize would take him, but when the dragon, whom he named Temeraire, hatched aboard the naval vessel and bonded with the captain, their exploits began and took enthusiastic readers along across nine books of battles, politics, diplomacy, the occasional return to sea, and more dragons. Set in the era of the Napoleonic Wars, though not quite the same as the setting that Patrick O'Brian sweeps readers into, we cross paths with any number of figures whose names are known from history books from the French emperor himself to the Duke of Wellington to the notorious captain Bligh. We also encounter an array of equal variance among dragon kind. But at its core, this series is a tale about the dragon Temeraire and his captain Laurence, their bond that compels them to go through anything for the other and reconnects them whenever the universe (or the author of their story) conspires to divide them. I enjoyed their story from first meeting to the end.
Just awesome. Funny, mysterious, frustrating, and yet so so satisfying. This book series makes you smile and laugh aloud, which is something to be cherished. Lawrence and Temaraire will be in my heart forever, and I can't believe anyone would dislike this stunning blend of history and ingenuity. Also, the audiobooks are spectacular too!
Absolutely loved these books. I started reading them in high school but couldn't get through the slow points of the second book. I picked them up in 2023 again and fell in love all over again. The concept of the books is super interesting and I loved learning some history while being wrapped up in my favorite genre-fantasy.
Great series! Things drag a bit for several of the middle books. Everything that can go wrong, seems to go wrong. But I still love the idea of dragons and inserting them into historical time periods and how they're portrayed!
Not only is this a creative and well written adventure of the Napoleonic Wars, but it looks beautiful on the shelf too. The new edition has been released with a picture forming across the spins of all the books and excerpts in the back of dragon notes.
