I had seen this novel popping up on Instagram and I instantly feel in love with this cover, it tells such a powerful story without even reading the story. As a Canadian with indigenous ancestors I’m definitely trying to educate myself and diversify my reading and Joe Pete was a great way to start off this journey.
This novel tells the story of a few different characters but we are following our main character Joe Pete, a young indigenous girl as she tries to look for her father who has fallen through the ice and disappeared. Sometimes the content of this book was hard to read. One section that was especially hard was about Mohegan only because I am an animal lover but I also grew up on a farm so I know that at times despite you not wanting too you never want an animal to suffer. I love that Joe Pete knew in her soul that she could save Mohegan and she did whatever it took to do so. I also applaud her grandfather because he helped her even though he figured it would be futile. But also at this point it solidified that I hate her uncle. I liked learning about Kah Kah Ge Ow and Paguck. It was heard hearing how Joe Pete was treated and her family as well.
I did however get lost near the ending I re read the last few chapters a few times and I still don’t understand what happened. But I still enjoyed this book.
I would recommend this to readers wanting to educated themselves more on their history.
