But by far the most challenging has been using her writing skills to pen paranormal and steampunk novels in the turret office of her Seattle-area Victorian home. The Slayer starts almost at the same time as The Hunter, right after Colt's visit asking Winn about one part of the Book of Legend and before he summoned Lilly.
Winchester Jackson, now a sheriff in Bodie was escorting a carriage not knowing it had a vampiress in it. There was a bandit attack and, of course, she killed every member of the gang except one. She revealed she came on a diplomatic mission with a goal to ask the oldest of the Chosen to help them retrieve the part of the Book of Legend which was in the vampires' possession until someone had stolen it. Ten years before Winn had walked away from being a Hunter, but Colt's visit (we get to see how Winn sees it) made him accept the deal with the vampires. Their quest would lead them over the ocean, through the vast European forests and the Parisian catacombs.

You know how a lot of times otherwise a great male character becomes a wimp in his own story? Well, not the case here. He has his insecurities and fears, but they are simply part of him. These two are equals, older and more serious than Colt and Lilly and that set the tone for the whole book. Colt and Lilly had a crazy adventure. Winn and Lady Drossenburg had one too.
The difference between the two books is that Colt's adventure is truly Western, through the desert and caves, and Winn's has a bit more politics in it. Not necessarily bad, just different.
Even with all the differences, the romance is beautifully done in this book too. Nobody is in any hurry, everything goes slowly. And once again same as in The Hunter almost no sex story is its strength.

One of the things I liked is that we get to see European Hunters, who are more like a military and nothing like solitary types of American Hunters. Winn's first encounter with the British Hunters is great. The one in charge is uptight and full of himself. They call the frontier Hunters Slayers as an insult. Even outnumbered Winn is awesome.

“Well, you see, that’s the difference between you Hunters in your fancy uniforms and us frontier types. We don’t follow orders blindly ’cause we've got minds of our own.”

“’Course, you want to sit on that lily-white ass of yours and not do nothing about getting the Book back from those furries, that’s your choice,” Winn muttered loud enough for Frobisher and his men to hear. “But if you was an American Hunter, we’d say it was just ’cause you didn't still have the balls your mama gave you.”

One thing though: I couldn't forget he has a moustache. Constant reminder of his moustache and her ichor (instead of blood) was pretty distracting, but other than that this book is great.

Opening with a payroll coach robbery and ending with a demon getting his butt kicked, this novel has it all. The Slayer is book 2 in a Western Steampunk plus vampires, shifters, and demons series...got my attention, that’s for sure.

With the Jackson brothers, Remington, Colt and Winchester (I just LOVE the gun names for the brothers) each searching for a part of a book that had been separated into thirds, we enter into Winn’s book. The steamcoach is held up, and out steps a beautiful lady. Winn’s only complaint is that she’s also a vampire.

Winn comes from a line of Slayers, or Hunters. He and his brothers are the Chosen, even if Winn doesn’t want to admit it. The vampires have come for his help, which is unusual for a couple reasons. One, the vampires live in Transylvania. Two, Winn doesn’t help Darkin, he hunts them. And three, there are plenty of Hunters in Europe, why come all the way to America, to the Wild West, to find him? What is it they really want from him?

The author is very descriptive, and it’s easy to picture the landscape, the characters, the setting, as evidenced by adding in the newly completed Brooklyn Bridge (nice touch!) I had a harder time picturing some of the Steampunk gadgetry. Unfortunately the Steampunk aspect wasn’t utilized to its fullest potential, in my opinion. I'm sad to say that I feel we could take out all Steampunk aspects from this book and you wouldn't notice. It's like, "add an airship and goggles and your PNR becomes instant Steampunk." It's a fantastic plot, but I want more than a few gadgets thrown in here and there.

That being said, I did buy the first book in this series so I can find out all about Colt and Lilly. I really enjoy the author’s voice and writing style, and I will definitely be reading the next book.

This is a quote I really liked because I feel it really described Winn, the hero (who I totally pictured as Kurt Russell from Wyatt Earp—so hot).

“Why is it you prefer to operate behind the curtains?”
He tugged at the edge of his mustache. “When you live life in the shadows, the spotlight’s a shade too bright for comfort.”

I received this book through goodreads first-reads...

And I absolutely loved it. A big thanks to my girlfriend, Jillyn, who spotted it for me <3 I was captivated by the writing and the story, and I realize I was a fool for taking so long to finish it.

Despite not having the pleasure of reading the first book, I felt in no way lost to the continuing story, Theresa did a fantastic job of connecting the major plots in the first book to the second. The story is fantastic and has brought me to appreciate and admire the Steampunk genre more, I've been fascinated with it since I learned of it and this has opened me up to it so much more.

And as an avid supporter of star-crossed lovers, the pairing of Slayer Winchester Jackson and the vampire Contessa Drossenburg was a beautiful match. Not only do they have an untameable attraction to each other, but they are human and vampire, both hunt the other for survival, and not to mention the Lady Drossenburg is of Noble birth and Winchester a mere American law man. But they are forced to work side by side to save the world from the sadistic archdemon, Rathe, who wants to bring in his new world order.

I've grown attached to these characters, to Winn most of all and on an emotional level. He is everything I am and wish to be; loyal to a fault, protective, strong, knowing his place in the world and accepting the fact he can't change it. He is a passionate person and it is clear he would do anything for his brothers and the love of his life, he has made me laugh with him, smile with him, scream in anger and frustration with him, and even cry with him. He is a powerful character and Theresa is a powerful writer for allowing me to connect so well.

That being said, I am cursing the fact that I do not yet have the third book because I want to know what happens! I was content not having read the first (though I would like to, I know it's going to be as good as the second) but I am just itching to get my hands on the third one. It's like Harry Potter all over again. Must. Read. More!

All in all, this was a great book. The writing was beautiful and inspirational, I loved it. I highly recommend it to those who love vampires, adventure, suspense, romance, and love that prevails and over comes all odds. Happy reading everyone!

Ok, this was interesting. I find myself very intrigued by the world that the brothers inhabit and I think that Theresa Meyers does a great job of painting the landscape so that you can understand the time frame and just where they are in general. I loved the nod to the "new" Brooklyn Bridge.

Alexa was intriguing. I liked the fact that she didn't hide the fact that she was a vampire and most of the reason they were attempting to back the brothers was because Rathe's plan would dry up the food source. Yes, she did take care to be gentle and it seemed (it wasn't ever fully described) that at least the vampires with Alexa only fed from those who were a little more willing than not. I also liked her inquisitiveness and her wonder about all things, especially any of Marley's inventions. I also liked how quickly she picked up on Winn's issues with the dark and tried to talk him down when things might have gotten to be a little too much.

I found myself wanting a little bit more about Winchester. Yes, he flat out said that he didn't want to be a Hunter anymore, but it just feels like there'd been more to his reasoning besides his mother and Colt. He commented (both out loud and internally) a couple of times that anyone who loved him had a tendency to wind up dead. Which is part of why he was trying not to feel anything for Alexa. But, that's technically only one person who's dead, so how can one death (that wasn't his fault, no matter what he wants to think) and one almost drowning, granted that did include some permanent injury, but how does that equal "everyone who loves me ends up dead"? I just wanted more on those feelings. Again, I can kind of understand it, he mentioned several times about how he didn't feel like he was necessarily cut out to be a Hunter. But there wasn't really any in depth exploration. Or maybe I just wanted more...

I did like the way Winn tried to be a gentleman with Alexa, even more as he started to see her as more than a vampire who wanted to help stop the end of the world. The way he started watching out for her, even knowing she could protect herself, but he still did his best to pay attention to potential problems and try to either get through it faster than not or do what he could to keep her from having to deal with whatever the issue. I do wish that he'd actually gotten to punch Frobisher in his smug little face, but I guess the way things really ended kind of worked too.

I liked getting to see a little more of the original Hunters and how the book came to be separated. It was also interesting to see how long the Chosen have been prophesied, and the way that it ties into the Jackson brothers.

Started reading this as soon as I finished The Hunter. I loved the world and I needed to read Winn’s story. Another great combination of hunter and darkin. Honestly, I loved Winn. He had the most to be angry about, yet he could see the other side of the story. And Tessa was the perfect foil for him, until she was more. Another great installment of this series, which can be standalones, but I’m glad I read them in order.

My Rating: 3.5 stars: Liked it - recommend (B+)

You have to love a book that starts out in the middle of a stage coach robbery. Taunting and name calling leads to four guns cocked and aimed at our hero, Winchester Jackson. And then all hell breaks loose when the an enchanting contessa climbs off the coach and proceeds to slaughter the entire gang of outlaws. The Slayer starts off with a bang and rarely slows down.

The Slayer is the second book in the Legend Chronicles trilogy, overlapping in content and time with the first book, The Hunter. Although you need not have read the first book in the series to enjoy The Slayer, a bit of background is helpful. The books are set in a steampunked version of the “wild west,” where it has been prophesied that the Jackson brothers are the Chosen who will bring together the three pieces of the lost Book of Legend and defeat the evil demon lord, Rathe.

This book follows the adventures of Winn, the eldest of the Jackson brothers, each trained as a Hunter (defenders of humans against the Darkin) and each with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Winn has given up tracking down and hunting the paranormal and supernatural beings that roam the earth, but when the Contessa Alexa Drossenburg, a vampire, asks him for help, he finds it hard to say no. Winn finds that the pull of being a Hunter is too strong and agrees to help the vampires recover a piece of the Book of Legend (and brother Colt telling him to do so helps influence the decision).

I very much enjoyed The Slayer, even a bit more than the first book; there was less detailed world-building and more of an organic growth to the mythology and story. The action and tempo, which was fast-paced during the action scenes, but a bit slower during the inter-personal time, was entertaining.

The romance between Winn and Alexa (aka Tessa) was slow but smoldering. I felt the pace of their “courtship” was fitting as they took the time to learn more about each other. They are natural enemies - each having to learn to accept the other and that preconceived notions aren’t always true. Their mutual attraction is powerful, and while neither deny their attraction to the other, they each hope to keep it in check. They never forget who they are, but see uniqueness in the other-how the other is different from any (Darkin/Hunter) they've met before. And although it takes all book for them to finally consummate their relationship, the story is filled with sexy glances, simmering touches and smokin’ kisses. This is one of the wonderfully vivid examples:

"As she walked by, the tantalizing scent of sweet female filled his nose and the satin of her dress made the sounds of sheets moving on a bed."

I did feel that there were some inconsistencies with the Darkin and powers during the course of the story. For example, Tessa has the ability to dematerialize and reappear in another location. Yet in the middle of the story there were a few times where she unnecessarily put herself at great risk by physically jumping from one place to another. In addition, I felt that the time pressure Winn and Tessa kept placing on themselves (Winn was counting off minutes as time slips away, yet they have a couple of weeks to “get the job done”) was a bit dramatic. While these things aren’t deal breakers, it did bother me enough that I made note of it a few times while reading.

I also wanted more from/with Rathe, the “bad guy.” His presence was more of an "assumed" one until the very end. I hope he has a bigger role in the final story. In addition, I am looking forward to seeing how some of the open-ended pieces conclude, especially those involving inventor friend, Marley.

Overall The Slayer is a delightful story. I loved that it fed directly from last book. The flow of the story was mostly spot on, and even when it did get a little slow, it wasn’t repetitive. I am most certainly looking forward to the next story (The Chosen, March 2013) to see how it will all wrap up.

The Jackson brothers are on a mission. They may not believe the rumors that they are the prophesized Chosen, but they can’t let evil reign. They need to find the three sections of the Book of Legend. It will take recombining the Book to stop the archdemon lord, Rathe, from opening the Gates of Nyx, a portal between the human and Darkin realm.

Many years ago Winchester Jackson gave up hunting for the quiet life. He prefers being the sheriff for Bodie over hunting down Darkin, the supernatural children of the night that prey on humans. Things are heating up though and the Darkin are seeking out Winn. All he wants is to be left alone, but when the Darkin want your help to stop their enemy, you tend to take notice.

Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter has come to persuade Winchester to aid her people with finding the last third of the Book. Vampires have guarded the Book for over six centuries and it has been stolen. One would think they wouldn’t want or need the help of a hunter, but when their way of life and food supply are being threatened, they will do anything to stop the threat, including working with their sworn enemy.

Winn and Alexandra’s adventure takes them around the world. From the first moment they meet, they are attracted to each other. Their attraction almost jumps off the pages. While this book is very light on sex, it is filled with sexual tension. These are two people, who should not want each other, but something is pulling them together and there seems to be nothing they can do about it.

The Slayer may be book two in The Legend Chronicles, but personally I think it could be read anytime so far in the series. The Hunter and The Slayer run simultaneously. While The Hunter goes into a little more detail of the battle ahead, there is enough information in The Slayer, you won’t be lost.

I’m sorry to say, but I’m just not feeling this book 100%. The story as a whole is good. I love the idea, but something was missing. Character development focused mainly on the two protagonists, leaving me wanting in regards to secondary characters and the villain. In fact, the villain didn’t seem very villain-ish at all. However, Rathe’s evil behavior does play a larger role in The Hunter. He almost seemed like an afterthought in this book. He loomed in the background and then once the showdown was upon us, it was just over.

The ending is probably one of the most rushed I have ever read. I was getting down to the last dozen pages thinking something was wrong. It can’t be ending and then suddenly was resolved. There was tons of build up and then a simple unfulfilling resolution. This might be something that would be hard to remedy though. All three brothers need to find their portion of the Book before there can be a conclusion. I am not sure how it will all play out, but I am still interested in the outcome.

The more I think about it, I can see this series improving once all the books are written. This would allow the reader to enjoy the books as one big novel. The Slayer didn’t even have a cliffhanger. It just left me hanging. While it may appear that I don’t like the series, I really do. It’s is action packed and the universe is fun to read about. That is probably the genius of Ms. Meyers. I am frustrated with this particular book, but the desire to know what is going to happen is pulling me in and holding on. I believe this series is still a winner and I’m looking forward to Remington’s story, The Chosen. It is scheduled for release March 2013. There is also a rumor of a novella for the fun and funky inventor of the series, Marley Turlock. It looks like it should be coming out late 2012, YAY!!

This Slayer is not in high school, and there's no one named "Spike" involved.

Although strangely enough, there IS a Hellmouth, or near enough, and Winn Jackson needs to close it. He's also crazy enough to get himself involved with a vampire.

So there are a few coincidences.

But Winn's vampire is Countess Drossenburg. She's helping him find one-third of the Book of Legends. Not out of the goodness of her no-longer-beating heart.

But because if the Archdemon Rathe opens the Gates of Nyx, he'll enslave all the humans, and the vampires will lose their food source.

Enlightened self-interest is a powerful motivator, even for vampires. Vladimir, Alexandra's cousin, emperor, and betrothed (in pretty much that order or importance to her) sent her to America to bring the oldest brother of the Chosen to Europe.

Why? To find the part of the Book that Rathe's allies had stolen from Vlad's castle.

Winn decides to go along for the ride. Not because he believes that he and his brothers are the Chosen, but because he's still their big brother, and he still needs to protect them.

And because he finds Alexa tempting as hell, in spite of her being Darkin, and his sworn enemy as a Hunter. He needs her to find that damn book.

Anything to stop Rathe.

Alexa hasn't felt anything since her husband died, two centuries ago. She does not want to be tempted by this Hunter who sees her as an ememy. But adventuring with Winn makes her feel something she hasn't felt in centures. Winn makes her feel alive.

Alexa wants to step aside from the temptation he represents, but Vlad orders her to protect Winn. Alexa obeys, in spite of the prophecy that says she will betray all she holds dear, and will die at the hands of the one she loves.

Will it be worth the cost? Can they stop Rathe before it is too late?

Escape Rating B+: The Book of Legends series is an absolutely grand adventure of the Indiana Jones school of death-defying deeds and thrills and chills on every page. I would say it's a fantastic lark, except that the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

The beginning of the story runs in parallel to The Hunter. It shows exactly the same events, just told from Winn's point of view instead of Colt's, so there is a bit of repetition. The Slayer even uses the same dialog. It's good for the story that this doesn't go on too long.

Winn's story branches off when Winn leaves on the Countess' airship for Europe. Then things get really interesting, but there are similarities to the previous book in the series.

The theme of unresolved sexual tension does ratchet up the stress in both books. These two people are not supposed to get together! So they resist mightily throughout the story, only giving in very late in the game. While it made sense in both Colt's and Winn's books, I hope Remy's story follows at least a slightly different path.

I adored the ship and crew of Le Renaud. When Winn and his vampire need to return to America, they find an all-female pirate ship to take them back. Every scene with the pirates was terrific! I think we'll be seeing more of them, because of some backstory, and that's going to be fascinating.

Meyers definitely puts the steam in steampunk, as the cover blurb says, but it's more than that. This adventure romps across Europe, and gets more inventive and more wild with every mile it travels. Whew! what a blast!

Book Two in the Legend Chronicles series focuses mainly on Winchester Jackson and his part in the quest to retrieve sections of the Book of Legend.

Book Two actually overlaps certain sections of Book One. We see parts of Book One that were originally told from the points-of-view of both Colt and Lilly, rewritten in Book Two and told from the points-of-view of Winchester and his vampire companion Alexandra.

The story begins in the Wild West, outside of Bodie, CA sometime in the year 1883.

Winchester (Winn) Jackson is the oldest Jackson brother. Because of events that happened when he was younger, Winn gave up the life of a Hunter some 10-years prior. Winn harbors a horrible nightmare from his youth. The event helped him decide that fighting Darkin wasn't worth it. Too many people lost their lives, including those that ever became close to a Hunter.

Lady Alexandra (Alexa) Porter, Contessa Drossenburg, emissary of His Vampire Imperial Majesty, Emporer Vladimir the Fifth (how would you like to try and fit that on a business card?!) is sent to solicit the help of the The Chosen. The vampires' 2nd third of the Book of Legend has been housed in the royal vampire castle for several years but was recently stolen. The vampires fear that if Rathe allows the Gates of Nyx to be opened up, vampires will become extinct due to the demons taking control and murdering, kidnapping, or enslaving the very thing that sustains them ~ Blood from humans.

The electricity between Alexa and Winn is unmistakable. As much as Winn tries to deny it, his feelings for her grow at an alarming rate throughout their time together. Alexa has a hard time believing that she's drawn to a mortal as strongly as she is. She hasn't felt this way about anyone in hundreds of years. I love their connection. The fact that they are natural enemies (human vs predatory vampire) creates a long dialogue of "should we, or shouldn't we" scenarios that leave Winn and Alexa frustrated in more than one way.

The ultimate quest to locate the stolen piece of the Book of Legend takes Winn and Alexa on some crazy and dangerous adventures. Uniting against the common enemy (who would be Rathe~The Demonlord) isn't easy for either the human or the vampire. The human was trained to kill the vampire and the vampire was trained to eat the human. While Winn and Alexa don't entire trust one another, they manage to unite into a solid front and work together.

Theresa Meyers' world building continues in Book Two, taking us to an entirely different continent, in search of Part 2 of the Book of Legend. We get to watch Winn morph from a Wild West Sheriff back into the fighter he was trained to be by his Hunter father. The character development continues as well since we get a whole new set of characters to add to the few from Book One. There are just as many references to steampunk in "The Slayer" as were in "The Hunter."

As I noted in the Book One review:

This novel has a great combination of Steampunk, Romance, Adventure, and Paranormal elements.

I enjoyed "The Slayer" very much and will be starting Book 3 soon.

After reading The Hunter I started this one right away not wanting to let the steampunky feel vanish from my memory. I knew right off the bat that this one wasn’t going to be anything like the last. First, I had issues with Winn. Completely not the fault of the author but I am not a mustache girl…at all. After seeing Winn on the cover and then reading about his fantastical stache that he twirls around his finger when he is anxious, I kept picturing Burt Reynolds. I am not a child of the 70′s and so Burt just ain’t my thang. I know, I know, staches in the wild west were popular. Whatever. There is a scene where he goes to shave and I really hoped he’d shave the thing off lol. No luck. So not finding the hero enticing was strike number one.

I wasn’t fond of Tessa at all. Not sure why. Possibly because she starts out the book being a total snob and then by the end talked and acted like any other character in the novel. If she was a snob I wanted her to retain that regality at least in part. I just wasn’t intrigued enough with her character to care about her reactions to Winn or her growing feelings for him. Strike two.

While The Slayer does continue the story arc of The Hunter I found Tessa and Winn to drag a lot. I wasn’t interested in their budding romance at all like I was with Colt and Lily. I found I wanted to skip ahead to find out when they finally got around to expressing their emotions and not hiding behind everything. Winn spends a lot of time feeling guilt for accidentally killing his mother when he was a boy. I get that, I do. However, you can’t let guilt get in the way of protecting the world. There were times I thought he wouldn’t be able to move past it for the greater good. There didn’t seem to be as much action either, though there was some. I found those action scenes to be what grabbed me the most. Theresa Meyers excels at the pulse pounding action by far.

The best part about The Slayer is that the story line is running parallel to The Hunter. So as everything is happening with Colt and Lily, at the same time it is happening with Winn and Tessa. So some of the scenes when everyone is together repeat themselves and we get it from another point of view. I liked that fresh take on things. I assume since Remington had also departed with the prickly shape-shifter China to parts unknown that their book will be on the same timeline. It’s a unique way of viewing things and even though I didn’t get into Tessa and Winn as much, I appreciated their views. I also enjoy that it seems to be a recurring thing that in order to bring the pieces of the puzzle together, each brother will have to become a bit of a supernatural themselves, something they had sworn to hate until meeting the women.

I didn’t enjoy The Slayer nearly as much as The Hunter but I am really looking forward to Remington’s story. He seems more at ease then Colt and Winn and seeing him with the sarcastic China should be an adventure worth waiting for!

I give The Slayer by Theresa Meyers 3 stars!

The Slayer
By Theresa Meyers
Copyright April 2012
Publisher: Zebra (Paranormal Romance)

Brothers Winchester, Remington, and Colt know the legends—they were trained from childhood to destroy demon predators, wielding the latest steam-powered gadgetry. It’s a devil of a job. But sometimes your fate chooses you…
Chasing Trouble

Winn Jackson isn’t interested in hunting nightmares across the Wild West—even if it’s the family business. Unlike his rakehell brothers, Winn believes in rules. As sheriff of Bodie, California, he only shoots actual law breakers. That’s what he’s doing when he rescues the Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter, a lady with all the elegance of the Old World—grace, beauty and class. And then he sees her fangs.

Alexandra isn’t just some bloodsucking damsel in distress, though. She’s on a mission to save her people—and she’s dead certain that Winn’s family legacy is the only way. Luckily, aside from grace and class, she also has a stubborn streak a mile wide. So like it or not, Winn is going to come back with her to the mountains of Transylvania, and while he’s at it, change his opinions about vampires, demon-hunting, and who exactly deserves shooting. And if she has her way, he’s going to do his darnedest to save the world…

It’s just a normal day in the life of Sheriff Winn Jackson. He’s stopping an attempted stage robbery. Hoss Dalton has his head and rifle sticking into the window of the weekly stage and Winn is trying to talk him into backing down and tossing him the rifle, otherwise his head would be blown ‘clear off his shoulders’. At the same time Dalton’s henchmen have cocked their weapons with the intent of shooting Winn and possibly killing everyone while taking whatever money and goods are on the coach.
While Hoss and Winn are “discussing” the matter, the steps of the stagecoach drop down and a woman elegantly exits the coach saying “Is there a problem gentleman”? We are now introduced to the next player in our story. The Contessa Drossenburg, and here’s where the story goes totally south. The Contessa Transforms from a lovely lady into a fearsome vampire in front of the two men. She then proceeds to wipe out the Dalton boys in the blink of an eye. The Contessa asks Winn if he knows Sheriff Jackson, and he admits that he is the Sheriff.
The Contessa wants Winn to help find their lost copy of the 2nd part of the book, and he initially says NO. Things move on and he finally agrees. We are taken on a tour of Europe and meet all sorts of characters who want Winn to fail, or die. Winn and the Contessa reach an accord and work together very well. You’ll just have to read the book to find out the rest of the story. All I’ll tell you is that it is one surprise after another. With a fantastic ending.

FTC Full Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher, who only requested a fair and impartial review.

Love Slays.

Theresa Meyers has created another fabulous chapter in The Legend Chronicles with The Slayer, and this time readers will follow the eldest Jackson brother Winchester Jackson in his quest to save the world.

Winn was ready to settle sown and put his Hunter status on the shelf and leave that life for good. Winn is an amazing character with his love and loyalty to his brother even after the hell he was raised in. Growing up in a family if Hunters can be a dangerous sometimes, but as Winn found out looks can be deceiving and have deadly consequences in life and from all of the trouble Hunting had gotten him into, to protect his loved ones, Winn stopped Hunting and took up a star. Being the law in his small Bodie, CA town can keep Winn busy on any day and when Winn goes out to foil a stagecoach robbery his finds himself surrounded by the dead and a deadly woman in blue.

Alexandra Porter, Contessa Drossenburg, has much on her mind as she tries to hunt down an American Slayer who is said to be the Chosen of legend to help the Vampires end the reign of a Darkin who hell bent on killing other Darkin, and enslaving humans. Being in a new world is strange enough but as Alexandra encounters Winn she is swept away by feelings she had thought to have been lost all of these years of her widowhood, and with a deadly prophesy about, Alexandra must keep her wits about her even in the most trying of times.

With romantic suspense and all of the fabulous steampunk creations whirling around the storyline, The Slayer is a fantastic novel of epic proportions. This series follows through books that are in the perspective of each brother so while the central theme of the books stays the same, the quest to unite the Book of Legend to save the world, you get this great view through three central characters. Each brother has fallen for a Darkin female and with their verbal witty exchanges the readers get a glimpse into what makes these brothers tick. While The Slayer follows Winn, we find a man with a troubled past who wants to do right by the people he loves and protect them with a vengeance. Winn is an honesty good man who has had a hard lot in life and wants to hold back his feelings for Alexandra because not only is she a vampire, a race of whom he has slain many, but also because she has her own future to fulfill. As the journey progresses across the globe through all sorts of dirigible and pirate ship traveling apparatuses Winn and Alexandra must pursue these pages of the Book to save not only themselves and those they love, but also the whole world at larger.

With adventure around every page, The Slayer will capture readers with a great pair of characters who are fighting the forces of evil with love, arrows, and inventions across all sorts of terrain filled with Darkin and danger. If the wolves don’t kill you the multitudes of mechanical spiders just might.

I read the first book 'The Hunter' a few months ago after getting a copy when I was at AAD in Philadelphia last year. As I really enjoyed it when book 2 of the series came out I invested and bought myself a copy (kindle- gotta love it) did I like book 2? Yes, I did.

It had been a while since I read the first book and as there is some overlap I did have to think, what happened again, but it was nice to meet Colt and Lily again and I having to remember is not a bad thing, it exercises my Minxy mind! I know, now you are thinking 'does that mean I have to read book 1 first?' No, it would help, but there is enough in this story for it to stand alone or to make you read it and want to look at the first book.

So... what's it all about Minxy... I hear you shout, it's about Winchester Jackson, eldest of the Jackson brothers and one of 'the Chosen', only problem is that he doesn't believe in he chosen and has turned his back on hunting. However when has this ever mattered to evil? So when Archdemon Rathe decides he will open the gates of Nix and rule earth the brothers are forced into action, and that includes Winn.

He is a really interesting protagonist, in some-ways the stereotypical old west law man, but in many ways a genuine man trying to find his niche in the world and coping with the life he had been served... and yes he has a moustache. Moustaches don't bother me, I grew up with moustaches in the family, they are like an old furry friend, when I was little Minxy's daddy rocked the Mexican bandit look. Ok, I am wandering again.

As a hunter Winn is dubious about entering into a deal with Darkin, but Alexa intrigues him and you can almost taste their attraction from the beginning. What will he do? Give into the attraction or follow everything his pa taught him? Well, I'm not going to tell you but it is an emotional journey which takes him from the wild west to Paris and all points in between.

For me there were some really nice steampunk touches, as usual the inventor Marley Turlock doesn't disappoint and we find out a few secrets about him, we have air travel on a dirigible, Alexa is also an amateur inventor making her much more than a pretty face, something else which intrigues Winn.

I really liked Alexa, I was interested in her back story and what she would do, how she would fulfil her part in the ancient prophecy of the chosen. She is witty, intelligent and fierce in a fight, what's not to like. It did take me a while to get into the book, but that was my fault, I was distracted by work but once I got a few chapters in I was hooked and read the rest like a demon.

Add it to your summer reads, it is a good story with likeable and interesting characters. I give The Slayer 4 frillies out of 5. Definite summer fun with a bustle and a corset.

After having read and enjoyed my first foray into steampunk with the first book in this series, The Hunter, I had to get my hands on The Slayer when I heard it was up for review. And I wasn’t disappointed in this sophomore effort. Ms Meyers took on a thrill ride across the globe filled with paranormal encounters galore.

While this book is the second in a series, it can stand alone. However, it makes much more sense if you’d read The Hunter first. Because in The Hunter, you get a lot of world building and plot set up. In The Slayer, the reader is thrown right into the action meeting Winn, a Wild West sheriff, as he is trying to foil a stagecoach hold up, and Alexa, a vampire countess on a mission to find Winn. See, there’s the prophecy that Winn and his brothers are “The Chosen” and they’re supposed to stop the demons from opening this gate and basically taking over the world. But Winn has walked away from his destiny and Alexa has been given the task of convincing him to help save the world. Most of this is set up in the previous book (where Winn’s brother is doing his part) and very early in this book (say the first 3 chapters), so I’m not really giving much away here.

I enjoyed the interactions between Winn and Alexa. They’re natural enemies as she’s a vampire and he’s a hunter, trained from birth to hunt the Darkin (demons, vampires, shifters and so forth). They join forces against a mutual enemy, but don’t really trust each other. They’re both constantly looking over their shoulders, all the while fighting this insane attraction to each other. Ms Meyers did a great job of creating the tension while not being too repetitive and still moving the romance and action forward.

The plot was fun and fast paced. The reader is taken from the Wild West to Transylvania and ultimately ending up in Paris. The modes of transportation, mechanical horse and two different kinds of airships, and so many interesting and unique mechanical devices (which make it steampunk) help make this trip quite memorable.

I have to say, I’m very much looking forward to the final book in the series. We got a quick glance at the last brother, Remington, and his foil (who happens to be a shifter). All three stories are taking place simultaneously as they’re racing against a clock. And I’ll be counting down the days until The Chosen is released.

Western romance combined with paranormal and steampunk. A lot to be thrown together but Meyers balances each genre well and still keeps the action moving.

Winn is everything old west, right down to his mustache that he twirls around his finger. For some reason Josh Holloway with a long mustache is the image that is conjured up for Winn. Maybe it is his looks, imagine him in cowboy gear, or the way Winn talks, think sexy drawl. Whatever the reason not a bad image to have for the hero.

Winn and his brother are the Chosen, though Winn will deny the fact. He has hunted demons and hates vampires, so it is an ironic twist that he is forced to work with one. Alexandra is the beautiful bloodsucker he gets stuck with, though after being around her even Winn has to admit she is different. Alexandra is no more thrilled with the situation than Winn, though for her it is because his kind has killed nearly all of her family. So does she feel a little alone? Yes, and maybe when she realizes Winn is not exactly like the other hunters she knows she will realize her days alone could be numbered.

The first half of the book was a little difficult to get into. The action was there, the book starts out with a stagecoach robbery. And the characters are put together nicely, Winn and his western charm and Alexa with her sophisticated allure. Maybe the steampunk elements weren’t enough, though there are some great weapons made by Sir Turlock. And it wasn’t for lack of impending doom, a big bad demon wanting to get his hands on “The Book” equalling end of the world stuff.

Whatever was missing in the first half clicked once Alexa was taken. No more will be said about that, don’t worry no spoilers. Once this event happens Winn and Alexa’s deep feeling are felt. The end of The Slayer bumped the rating from a two up to a three. Now lets just hope that book three has a little more steampunk!

Winchester Jackson is the oldest of three brothers who were trained by their father to be Hunters. They hunt the Darkin and keep humanity safe. Except, after a serious incident shakes Winn up he turns his back on Hunting and becomes the Sheriff of Bodie, California. Until the day Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter comes looking for him. She needs his help in locating a third of The Book of Legend and as one of The Chosen he can help her find it.

Winn and his brothers scoff at being The Chosen, but they can’t let any of The Book of Legend fall into the hands of the Darkin. The Gate of Nyx between Hell and Earth is weakening and a demon named Rathe is determined to come through and enslave Earth. In order to close the Gate and save them all the three brothers need to unite the three pieces of The Book of Legend to close the Gate. It’s a race against time and Darkin. Will the brothers be able to win even as they don’t believe in the Legend?

This is Book Two of The Legend Chronicles and I was just as swept along as I was with the first as they raced to find a piece of the Book of Legend. Winn and Alexa are interesting characters and the fact that she is a vampire and Winn is a Hunter made it even more interesting to see them overcome their differences. The story flowed smoothly and the plot was excellent. I look forward to Remington’s book The Chosen due out March 5, 2013.

Winchester Jackson knows what supernatural beings to fight in the States, but now he is thrown into the unknown when His Vampiric Imperial Majesty sends his emissary, Lady Alexandra Porter (Alexa), to bring Winn back to Transylvania to find the next missing piece of the Book of Legend that Winn’s father hid. Although Winn has left the world of supernatural fighting he is reeled back in after finding out that they must find all the missing pieces of the book or all hell will break loose. In an unlikely turn of events, it is the beautiful vampire, Alexa, who aids him in more ways than one. Winn has always believed that there are no good vampires in the world but after meeting Alexa , Winn slowly starts to realize that there might be a few good Darkin and that maybe his heart isn’t as hard as he believes it to be.

A good follow up for Meyers. She keeps the pace going from the first book, The Hunter, and by the end you are looking forward to the third installment. The steampunk world Meyer’s has built is very imaginative and I love their adventures on the airship. Definitely felt like I wanted more out of this one but I was satisfied with what was given by Meyers.

I'm surprised I liked this book as much as I did, as Steampunk really doesn't have an allure for me. I never would have picked this up on my own, but I ended up enjoying it nonetheless. It is categorized as a Stemapunk Romance, but the romance aspect takes a backseat to the story and the unfolding adventures. I didn't even really buy into the attraction between the characters, so thank goodness that was only one part of the story.

The Slayer is Book 2 in a trilogy that focuses on 3 brothers in the Wild West who hunt supernatural creatures, and it just so happens that all hell is going to break loose when a rogue demon is on a quest to open the gates of Hell upon Earth. That event is destined to kill every living thing on Earth. This explains why a vampire is willing to team up with hunter Remington Jackson, to stop this from happening (if nothing is living, how will the vampires feed?).

If I had never watched an episode of the TV show Supernatural, I might not have an appreciation for the book, and probably would have problems buying into the supernatural realm. So, I was prepared for some of the elements in this book, and really enjoyed the story - it was more fulfilling than a lot of romances. Might read the third book to find out how it all ends.

My thoughts:
(The short, fast version) ~ Wonderful story! I couldn't put it down. The Legend Chronicles are a must read for fans of steampunk! The characters are fantastic, the plot is intriguing, the story itself is entertaining, it is paced perfectly and the ending leaves you screaming for more!

(The longer version) ~ I fell in love with this book from the start. I was intrigued by the characters right away. Theresa Meyers has created a wealth of fantastic characters in this series. She started with creative names and flushed them out with well developed personalities, enough back-story to make sure you get to know them, and principles/beliefs that they are willing to sacrifice for. She takes these fabulous characters and sets them into a world that has been carefully built to be the perfect setting for their lives. It is a clever blend of Old West meets technology with a few extra twists. I truly enjoyed the interactions of the characters and was thrilled by the way the relationship developed and played out between Winn and Alexandra.

I can't wait for the next book and would encourage all steampunk fans to check this series out!

2nd book in series is rock solid!

This is the story of the oldest Jackson brother, Winchester. Winn is the sheriff of Bodie, California. He hasn’t hunted in a while, he left that life behind. He admits he’s not up to speed but his instincts and training are intact. Winn was taught to use his mind to glamor victims and to block his mind from telepathy.

Alexa is a Transylvanian Countess charged with getting Winn to accompany her to her homeland and assist in retrieving the part of the Legend that the Vampires lost. Yep, she’s a vampire of nobility.
They travel in air ships, horse drawn carriages, on horseback and on foot with lots of different Darkins and humans alike chasing them. Rathe has placed a bounty on their heads.

We learn more about the Legend of the Chosen and about the original brothers. There is a definite difference between the Jackson brothers as Hunter/Slayers and the European Hunters.

The use of gadgets, steam powered airships, complex clues and fabulous characters, evil and peaceful, make this such an exciting mysterious, romantic adventure. Again, I give high praise to Theresa Meyers; this is such an awesome story. I am looking forward to the next book.

I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads First-reads

I enjoyed this book. The second book in the Legend Chronicles follows the travels of Winchester Jackson, oldest of the three Hunter brothers. Winn is drawn into taking a mission on behalf of the Imperial Vampire Court of Vladimir V. He agrees to travel to Europe in an airship full of vampires in order to help them recover their piece of the Book of Legend. The book has a good plot, and I enjoyed learning about Winn's background and why he stopped hunting and tried to settle down. He and the Countess Alexia get in to trouble on several occasions during their journey, and get in to a number of disagreements over the Darkin. They travel from the American West to New York City, then across the ocean to Austria, Paris, and London. Traditional enemies become allies as both Winn and the vampires want the archdemon Rathe defeated.

This is the second book in the The Legend Chronicle series and I enjoyed it as much as I did the first one. The thing I really like about this series, is that although there are multiple lead characters ( Winn, Remington and Colt Jackson) rather than dividing the book in sections devoted to each one, each brother is given their own book but each book seems to span roughly the same time period, so you can see various events from multiple perspectives. In fact from book 1 to book 2 at times certain conversations are even repeated, but seen from a different viewpoint. It's kind of trippy but really cool.

There was great romance and action in this book too!4 stars!

I enjoyed this book very much and will be buying the first in the series. Characters were strong (Loved the names of the brothers) Story was different, and kept my interest throughout. Made you want to read about other characters mentioned or that you met briefly. Well written, characters remained true to themselves even when their opinions or viewpoints changed. A good read :) and was a good read giveaway my second.

If you like the supernatural, romance, and a little steampunk then you'll love this book.

Winchester "Winn" Jackson is a Hunter of the the supernatural. He must team up with the vampire Countess Dressenburg to recover a pice of a book that will save the world from demons bent on destroying humankind (and the vampires' food source). If only he could trust her and she weren't so sexy.

This is a fun, fast-paced, action-packed, jet-setting steampunk book. It's got romance, adventure, western, and sci-fi details, with even the tiniest bit of an Indiana Jones feel, and it's pretty darn fun to read. I think fans of Zoe Archer's Blades of the Rose series could enjoy this series as well, although Archer wins out. At least for me.

For some reason this book wasn't as good as the first one. I do like Win and Tessas characters but I felt like I was missing something. I do not know what happened, was it the writing? The lack of steampunk puzzles the first one had? The story felt rushed and hard to read to me.

I did enjoy it, but I felt off when I finished it. I'm not so sure anymore if I want to read the third one.

This story takes place essentially in parallel with the first book. The overall plot is very similar, just a different location and different types of supernaturals. Not a bad story, mostly predictable with a few twists. Waiting now for the third book so we can follow the third brother and hope for a potential plot resolution.

Very formulaic romance adventure about a Western sheriff who though he has renounced killing vampires, he still sees them as monsters. He must unite with the intriguing, sexy Countess Alexandra, a vampire, to save the world from an evil demon. It's got some steampunk elements to it, which were interesting, but it's pretty rote.
