Cindy Gerard

The only thing Cindy had in mind when she started writing her first book was finishing it. The issue of actually selling it came much later. Only after she made that life-altering first sale did she realize that one book would never be enough. Now, over 20 books and numerous awards later, Cindy laughingly admits that she can barely remember life before...well, was there life before writing?

Actually, yes there was, and still is. A professional career woman, Cindy is a trainer for the Iowa Department of Human Services, a position she states is both challenging and rewarding. "Human Services is a front-line, real-life event. Everything about the job is immediate, from serving families in crisis, to assisting staff with difficult situations, to meeting tension-fraught deadlines."

Cindy's career has taught her much about the human condition, its frailties, its strengths, and its spirit. The evocative emotions that pour from the pages of her books are a reflection of some of her work experiences. Her writing celebrates life's richness and trials, offering a wide range of emotions — hope and elation, anger and indecision, laughter and, of course, love. And, according to her readers, her powerful love scenes run the gamut from steamy to tender to lusty to just plain fun.

Cindy's writing has netted her spots on bestseller lists, numerous RT nominations and awards, the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, a National Reader's Choice Award and two RITA nominations.

Between writing and working full time you wouldn't think Cindy would have much time for anything else. And while she does find her work and her writing rewarding, there does have to be more. Cindy has more. Much more. She is happily married to the perfect man. Tom's a cowboy, ladies!

Yes, even Iowa has its share of that saddle-straddling, Wrangler-wearing species who love their horses almost as much as they love their women. As a matter of fact, recently a whole herd of Texans gathered at the Gerard "Ranch" to treat their little ones to real horseback rides. Go figure.

Cindy has a passion for pink depression glass — she always has her eye out for the special piece to add to her collection. Cindy's down time often takes the form of the classic "busman's holiday." She loves to read and most of all, she loves to read at their summer place, a cabin in the woods on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota.

Both Tom and Cindy enjoy gardening and have recently expanded their annual beds into a perennial garden. Cindy says she can hardly wait for spring and the promise of all that reawakening and the colorful blooms.

In addition to the horses, the Gerards have two dogs, Ellie and Boomer, who pretty much get anything they want. Tom and Cindy have one son, Kyle, who, after years of keeping them in suspense, found Eileen, the perfect woman.

Since Jase Wilson ended his Army Ranger career, he's drifted from one loser situation to another. When his former team leader, Nolan Garrett offers him a career lifeline with E.D.E.N. Securities, Inc., he decides to take advantage of it and is determined to make it work. His first assignment is a colossal one...providing bodyguard services for mega rock star Sweet Baby Jane (Janey Perkins) who's got a serious stalker.

This story had so many angles as Janey had a wide circle of people around her that didn't necessarily have her best interests at the forefront. I liked that while Jase was attracted to Janey, protecting her and all that entails came first. They had an interesting dynamic that developed pretty naturally. The threats were serious and I liked that there was quite a lot of mystery surrounding the source of it all.

I enjoyed the story though the body count was a bit over the top. The ending, which I thought would be predictable, had a small twist I didn't foresee and liked. Good story and I liked both Jase and Janey.

Photobucket It happened. My first Cindy Gerard book with a 3 star rating Photobucket

I liked this one, but the main problem was the story and I guess I'm not so good with superstars and fame and all (crazy lunatic stalkers, hired assassins and such)

Don't really feel like writing a long review, here are just some of my thoughts...

The story is about Sweet Baby Jane, a rockstar singer, and Jase, her bodyguard. It all kinda smelled like the movie with Whitney Houston, there was a crazed fan/stalker who was making threats and yadda yadda yadda Photobucket
and there were like a dozen more characters that wanted her dead Photobucket so yeah, didn't like that part at all.

The romance was nice :D Jase was such a sweetheart Photobucket Jane was pretty tough. There were all those horrible things happening to her, but mostly she kept her cool :D Well, except that time when she didn't <3 And Jase was there to comfort her heheheh Photobucket

The ending was sort of: badda-bing badda-bum - OVER
There was this action and it was tense and all of the sudden I'm all wtf , what is happening, where am I in the story, hmmmm? Totally weird. But oh well, didn't like the bad guy so I was happy that it just finished :D

So anyway... Only one more book from this series

I love books with atypical heroines, so I was happy to see one in this book. And the book was good in itself, too! I have one little criticism regarding the plot, but otherwise I really enjoyed this book.

Series Note:
This series should probably be read in order, but this one you might be able to read as a standalone. Might.

Summary:
Since Jason Wilson got out of the military six months ago, he's been at loose ends. He plan to go into law enforcement is over because of hearing loss he suffered during battle. Now he has no idea what to do and struggles along until he decides to take his old comrade (Nolan Garret's) offer to work for E.D.E.N. Within a few weeks, Jason has his first assignment: provide security for superstar rocker Jane "Sweet Baby Jane" Perkins. Jase knows he'll do what it takes to get the job done, but being the Iowa country boy that he is, he's a bit thrown by the leather bustier, short skirt wearing, tattooed bad girl.

But Jane is anything but a bad girl. It's just an image and underneath, she's a true good girl. Not everyone sees it that way, though, and Jane finds her life in danger. Everywhere she turns, people are dying, her stuff being trashed, twisted gifts being left for her. Jason has to find a way to keep her safe and find the bad guy. All of which is made tougher by the strong chemistry between him and Jane. He tells himself he has to keep things professional, but he wants her too much. Too bad the bad guy is eventually going to catch up.

Review:
I wasn't sure I would like the whole rockstar theme to the book. I've read a bunch like that and they tend to be hit or miss for me. Luckily, this one was a hit. Probably because Jane was such an immensely likable character. There's not a spoiled, diva bone in her body. I really enjoyed reading about her.

Not only is she a bit atypical with the clothes she wears, the hair, the tattoos, but she's a sweetheart. And I loved that she was a rocker girl and that she managed not to fall into the trap of superstardom with the drugs and partying and all that. It all just made her such a fund character to read.

I liked Jason, too. He appeared for a scene in the first book of the series and I was curious about him. I'm glad Gerard brought him back. I think Gerard's portrayal of how he floundered after getting out of the Army is unfortunately a too true situation. Very realistic. Jase in general, though, was a good guy. He wasn't quite a standout hero, but I liked him.

And the chemistry between the two was great. I enjoyed the romantic aspect of the book, how Jase and Jane interacted and the relationship built. It's a little long in developing, but I didn't mind it all too much.

Now, about the suspense plot. Hmm. Well, if it weren't for one thing, I probably would have given this book 5 stars, or at least 4.5. But I was a bit annoyed by how many bad guys and potential bad guys there were in this story. There were so many nefarious characters it was a bit ridiculous. It was like every character around Jane had some reason to want to hurt her. The videographer, the agent, the drummer, the mob, the stalker, the preacher and probably 1 or 2 others. It was just too much and too unrealistic. I think most of those could have been shoved aside and the story should have focused solely on the main bad guy with maybe 1 other red herring thrown in.

But other than that, I had no complaints about the book. It was a good romantic suspense and I loved the characters. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Over the Line
4.5 Stars

This is another series that I had put on hiatus, but am glad I got back into.

There is a good balance between the romance and the suspense elements in the book. Janey Perkins and Jase Wilson are both appealing characters whose interactions are both sweet and spicy. Janey is the antithesis of the spoiled and narcissistic celebrity while Jase epitomizes the veteran who has yet to find his place after returning injured from combat. Their chemistry is sizzling and they complement each other perfectly.

The suspense plot is intriguing with several interlocking threads. It is entertaining to read along as the hints and red-herrings are revealed. Gerrard adds one final twist at the end that makes an otherwise predictable storyline a surprise.

Overall, an excellent read and I will be reading the next one sooner rather than later.

Contrary to books 2 and 3, we are back with a bodyguard intrigue.

In this story both main characters are younger than in the other books.

I liked the heroes relationship but not so much the plot. In my opinion, there were too many villains targetting the heroin and even so the motives were quite obvious.

Once I got over my disappointment that this wasn't going to be Dallas and Amy's book, I found myself quite happy to spend time with Jason 'Jase' Wilson. I don't remember him at all from the previous books (maybe it was a blink or you'll miss it appearance), so I felt like he came a bit out of nowhere, but he ended up being a great addition to the E.D.E.N. team.

Jase's baby-faced, wholesome farm boy good looks mask a hardened warrior who is deceptively capable of looking after himself, and anyone else under his protection. At a loss after the war and heading toward a path of self-destruction, Jase grabs a lifeline and joins his ex-soldier buddy Nolan's security firm.

His first job is personal security for the music's latest biggest thing, Janey 'Sweet Baby Jane' Perkins. This was my first book with a rock-star character, and call me sexist, but I think it would work better for me when the rock star in question was a male. All the skimpy clothing and gyrating on the stage didn't endear me to the character, but thankfully offstage she was as normal as someone in that situation could possibly be.

I wasn't at all jealous of Janey's lifestyle, fame or riches, but I was very jealous that she had a man like Jase in her life!

Given the nature of the storyline, there wasn't too much going on that I was able to relate to on a personal level but I didn't feel detached from the story especially, either. There was action aplenty to keep the reader entertained, with tight plotting and strong writing.

Sadly, my disappointment that this wasn't Dallas's book seems destined to continue for the time being. It's not the next one in the series either, dammit. Lucky for me, Cindy Gerard is providing such entertaining romantic suspense that I don't stay disappointed for long.

Cindy Gerard is a legend. I LOVE her writing. It's clean, sharp, snappy, sexy and intense as hell.

Over the Line was another great read and I guess if I didn't already have the high 'Cindy Gerard' expectations I probably would have rated it higher, but it just didn't draw me in as much as the first three and definitely the last book I read in this series.

I was forewarned that this wasn't quite as good, so I was prepared. I started reading anticipating that I wouldn't enjoy this book - and although that was untrue - I did like this book, it just wasn't as hard hitting for me as the others.

It took a long time for me to feel the heat between the characters and there was a few too many twists, turns and point of views. Usually Cindy Gerard can have me sitting on the edge of my seat with heart palpitations but I didn't get there with Over The Line. There just seemed to be one problem after the other, after the other, after the other and although it kept me guessing, I did become a little tired of it.

Did I enjoy it?? Hell yes.
Did it keep me entertained from start to finish?? Yes sir, it did.

But if I compare it to book 3 in this series? It just wasn't in the same ball park.

Cindy Gerard just keeps getting better and better and since everything I have read of hers has been 5 star, that is just fantastic. The pace is fast, the romance hot, the mystery and suspense is just short of the heart attack range. Not having a clue as to the baddie is a tribute to really knowing how to lay a creditable red herring.

There are a lot of people who want to see rock star Sweet Baby Jane Perkins dead. Everyone has a reason for wanting her gone: revenge, greed, ultimate control and just plain sick to name a few. Janey is not a bad person and it is so sad that so many people want to do away with her.

Jason Wilson is 6 months out of the Army Rangers having to leave due to hearing loss. He is at loose ends and realizes that he needs to get his act together. He contacts his former squad leader, Nolan (the N in E.D.E.N.) and asks for a job. Jace gets trained and assigned as Janey's bodyguard. He wants to be totally professional and since rock just isn't his thing, that should be no problem. Well, that doesn't last long as Janey is not at all what he expected from a rock superstar. Then there is her psyco stalker and other strange things that just don't add up and Jace has his hands full keeping Janey safe and his heart intact.

The story of Ethan and "Sweet Baby Jane", the rocker superstar with a stalker that he's assigned to protect.

Janey is nothing like Ethan expected, and his assignment both easier, since she's the farthest thing from a spoiled diva, and a lot harder, since it soon becomes apparent that her stalker isn't the only one they have to worry about. The attraction between them isn't helping things, especially since Ethan doesn't want to mess his first assignment on the job, but can't seem to be able to resist crossing the line with an all too willing Janey.

The two give each other the understanding and connection they hadn't known they'd needed, and support each other through a series of difficult situations that lead to them falling in love.

.

A little too complex, with a number of threads tangling up along the way and keeping you guessing as to who is really behind what until the end and culminating in a very engaging story.

The series continues with Under the Wire and the story of Manny, a friend of Ethan's who joins EDEN investigations.

Okay, so I had a little tiff with the heroine over a couple things, but she fixed it, sooo we're good. That aside, I liked this book. I won't say I really liked it, because I'm already forgetting people's names and I just finished it 5 minutes ago. But it was a quick, fun read.

However...

Q: How many different threats can one person successfully withstand with one half-deaf short guy? Oh, and for it to still be plausible.
A: 2-3 less than this plot had, depending on the split.

I'll go ahead and give a SPOILER WARNING, because I'm about to ramble and cannot be held responsible for the things I'm going to say here.

3 years ago, Janey was stalked, terrorized, and possibly sexually assaulted by Grimm (corniest villain name). He's now out of jail, so he's a threat. Threat level: This isn't good.

Derrek has tried to hook up with Janey for years, but he's always been rejected, even though the tabloids say otherwise. He's getting mighty pissed about it and fantasizes about making her pay before he dances on her grave. Uhm, yeah... that's a threat. Threat level: Shit, this is messed up.

Chris wants to be a famous videographer (wtf?) and is filming behind-the-scenes of Janey's tour. To make the resulting video sell more, she riles up Derrek, reveals Janey's secret whereabouts to enemies, and seems to daydream about how Janey's untimely death will make sales skyrocket. That's a threat that enables other threats to be more threatening, so it's bumped up a level. Threat level: What the fuck?!

Max has gotten into a lot of debt by gambling too much and now the mob-connected people he owes have come calling. They threaten Janey with bodily harm so that he'll pay up. Max decides to steal the money from Janey, but he'll pay it back. Minor threat with possible major threat. Threat level: AHH! Hide me!

Black is... fuck, basically Black was like the Dolores Umbridge of televangelists. And he hired a hit man to kill off a bunch of other people in random ways. Oh, and Janey is his grand finale. He's military trained and everything. Serious fucking threat. Threat level: ARMAGEDDON.

The body count: 8 dead, 2 injured, 1 scared so bad he had a heart attack. And Janey comes out of all this with a few scratches on her ankle. It seems like the threat was to Janey, but everyone else got killed in the process. But it's not like people just accidentally got in the way of a bullet meant for Janey. No, it was everyone that wasn't anywhere near her that got killed. She was usually in another city.

So, the lesson I've learned from this story is to stay as close as possible to the person being threatened and you have the best chance of surviving.

I'd recommend it to my blonde friends.

Review posted on Got Fiction?

2.5

I found this one really meh.

Basically you have Britney Spears, I mean Sweet Baby Jane (which seriously? That name?), and she has a stalker who was just released from prison. The hero works at a private security firm and is hired as her bodyguard.

I liked the bodyguard/pop princess dynamic. I didn't like how once people started dropping dead around her that the bodyguard, former Army Ranger at that, has to go and buy a pistol. He knows there are several fronts he has to defend her from and he isn't armed? I wanted to DNF it right there.

Later on, once we find out what is really going on, I kind of give this author some side eye for making that person the villain. It was really…lame. She should have gone with the more obvious choice; I think it was a better villain.

I felt like she was trying to put too many plot points into the book. It convoluted the actual plot, and distracted from the romance.

But yeah, I was unimpressed with this book, and hope that the next one is better.

A lot of different story threads, but woven well enough that the "whodunnit" aspect wasn't easily guessed. Character idiosyncrasies, while predictable, were still written in a way that built believable characters that were more engaging than in previous books of this series.

4.25 stars actually
Jason "Plowboy" Wilson (To the Edge) has finished his stint with the army rangers and brought his blushing country boy charm to the growing arsenal of E.D.E.N., but it's his Special Forces skills that will help him guard mega rock-star Jane "Sweet Baby Jane" Perkins against stalkers, overwrought fans and an unprecedented run of bad luck.
There was great chemistry between Janey & Jase but not a whole lot of surprises in the storyline itself and they were both very likeable characters. The secondary characters including the villain were identifiable but a little thinly written and the villain reveal a little clumsy for my taste. There were plenty of shadowy figures hanging on with their own agendas and schemes to best use Jane's fame to improve their end so the actual villain wasn't necessarily so easy to see which added a bit of fun to the suspense piece. This was a good read that kept excellent pacing and teased information out when it would most effect the characters and hold a readers interest.

I wasn't expecting anything from this story about Jason "Plowboy" Wilson and Sweet Baby Jane, the rockstar. This comes a close second to Ethan and Darcy's story. I just noticed that the plot of the 4 stories so far are mostly the same - stalker, prominent person, bodyguard, the farm and fields...

Not saying I'm tired of it, just noticing the similarities. It still works though.

It seems like all of the characters here are unpredictable and the ending is always a croquet game in Wes and Susan Garrett's backyard. Sounds like an irony but there we have it.

Still, I'll read the stories in this series and the Black Ops.

What I like best is the mystery and action. It really kept me on the edge of a thrill ride and as the bodies turn up one by one, the author really distracted me on the clearer picture. Very good writing, which is why I read on. Sex scenes were hot and the intensity made up for the frequency. These weren't written in explicit detail but they're rather sensual and I felt the characters' emotions when they made love.

The usual love angle is falling in love and trying hard not to, but still failing...and ending up in a backyard grill at the Garretts.

Great book!

Well developed, lovable characters. An engaging plot line that kept me hooked. More romance in this book, definitely a big plus.

Jane Perkins is a rock star. She grew up in scattered trailer parks across Mississippi. Jane built herself up from nothing and created a name for herself. Unfortunately, a lot of people want to take her out and mooch off her generosity. Jane soon finds herself in need of a bodyguard, whether or not she wants to admit it.

Jason Wilson in a former Army Ranger who is trying to find his way as a civilian. Because of hearing lose he can't join a police force, which was his goal. So Jason contacts Nolan, his former commander and buddy. He asks if the job Nolan offered him was still open for grabs. Jason soon finds himself assigned as the bodyguard of "Sweet Baby Jane". What is he going to do?

Jane and Jason had great compatibility. I really enjoyed them. Jane nicknames Jason "Baby Blue" and "Iowa". Awww!

I truely enjoyed reading this book. It isn't only romance there is excitement and danger and Jase must keep Janey safe while he is her bodygarde. Jase is a character I could relate to. He is fresh from the military and is devistated when he can't get his dream job as a cop because of Hearing Lose, that he recieved while in the military. So in desperation he goes to his old comander to get a job as a security specialist. His first assignment is a hard rockin, black leather wearin, rock star in need of a bodygarde. Janey is not your typical rocker, Jase finds her to be sensitive and no partier. He isn't only attracted to her body but her sweet nature and smart mouth. Their road through danger and finding love is fun, scarey and touching.

So I've been on a romantic suspense spree lately and as much as I love those twists and turns, this book had a little bit too much going on. To be honest, while reading this, I had to pause a few times and think "did the Cindy Gerard really write this?" because those Black Ops, Inc. series was just perfect and this was so... not. Having said that, I did like the romance bit, more than whatever the heck was going on clearly since I skipped some of the suspense part.

3.5* I was almost ready to give this 4* but didn't care for the way the suspense plot worked out. Won't give spoilers, but I'm not a fan of this particular "bad guy" scenario. Up until I had it figured out, I was intrigued with the multilayer suspense plot. I enjoyed the romance between the main characters, as well.

I also thought the reason Jase gives Janey towards the end for why they could work was lame. Earlier in the book the reasons stated were different, and more believable, imo.

At the beginning I was not so convinced, it smelled a bit too much of Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston movie... a rock star and her bodyguard... talk about clichè! But it grew better and better. The plot was complicated but good and in the end, you simply had to love both hero and heroine!

Onto the next one!

I don't know why I didn't connect with the first book, but I think I need to go back and try it again. I really did like this one a lot. I really liked Jase (Jason). I think it was kinda refreshing that Jase was just an averaged good old country boy. Good looking but with a baby face, 5'10 instead of over 6 feet as the usual. I was cracking up when Janey called him Opie out of anger. Anyway I need to hunt down the other books in this series.

The hero was different from what I expected - way less alpha but o so cute. Sweet baby Jane was rather nice but failed to seem completely real; I really liked how she helped Jason grow and find back his confidence.
The suspense behind the identity of the real mean guy is rather good, though I had had some strong doubts before the revelation.

For like a week now, I've been doing this Cindy Gerard marathon, I started with the Black Ops, Inc,,then the One-Eyed Jacks (skipped book 2 though, didn't really feel like reading it), then now this Bodyguard series.

I've read 1 & 2, skipping 3 (I know I should be intrigued by it because it's set in the Philippines, my country)..I skipped it because I'm not fond of the 2nd chance romance trope. So, now I found myself reading book 5...well I was really looking forward to reading Jason Wilson's story and oh boy did this book impress the hell out of me.

Seriously, the story hooked me right from the first sentence to the last sentence. The chemistry between Janey & Jase is so palpable I can feel it jumping off the screen. They really are a cute couple.

The scene where Janey first met Jase and thought he was some underage teenager looking for little bit of fun had me cracking. It was so funny, especially when she realized that he is actually her bodyguard. Add to that the scene where Jase has to justify his looks.

But what endeared this story to me is the MCs' internal monologues. The way they analyzed their feelings and then grudgingly admitted the truth. It was an emotional & twisted book too. The author did lead me in a wild goose chase as I read the book...and I found myself saying...who could have thought...

It's also endearing that Janey called Jase Baby Blue & Iowa like he was a little boy that needs a nickname and then we have Jase, Jase who made a very wrong first impression of Sweet Baby Jane...but found himself falling for her when he got to know her.

This book is not insta-love..really...the attraction did not even occur immediately...and the fact that they actually started as reluctant friends...that eventually transitioned into something else..makes it more appealing.

As I said the book is emotional especially when Jase and Janey had to talk and sort their feelings & I like it that Janey is headstrong and went after Jase but backed off and gave him time to sort some things for himself.

All in all this book got a 5 Baby Blue stars from me :D

4 awesome stars.

I LOVED this book. This may have even been my favorite book of the series. I really like how Gerard writes her characters. This series is exactly what I'm looking for when reading Romantic Suspense. There were so many facets to this story, so much upheaval, so many twists and turns. From the perspective, it was pretty cut & dry--the stalker was back and was making a big mess this time. But sometimes the clues didn't add up. And the big bad culprit kept me guessing until the very end. I really loved the mystery.

Jase & Janey were an interesting couple. I tend to like books with musicians since I'm such a music fan myself. So I was excited to see that Janey was a mega star rocker. Her public persona was much different than the real Janey though, and I loved getting to see what kind of sweet, sassy, loyal person she was under that makeup and rock and roll sexy look she had going on.

Jase was a mess of contradictions, in a good way. He has that baby face that makes him seem just like the Iowa boy you would expect him to be, on the surface. But he's struggling after leaving the Army. He's got this good boy charm, perfect manners, stoic air about him. But inside he's so very drawn to Janey and it's killing him slowly to stay away from her. And those good old boy charms? Well, he can be just as alpha as the next guy when he needs to be. His absolute deep seated need to be a protector is what keeps him at arm's length from Janey for so long. It's frustrating, but you can't but respect it.

Overall, a really great read. I'm looking forward to what comes next in this series.
