Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Lots of great development for characters we don't see too often. Plenty of Junior Detective League cuteness, surprising endings, and even a moment that tore at my heart. Another great volume from Gosho Aoyama!
Quick recap: When teen genius detective Shinichi Kudou (Jimmy Kudo in the American version) is shrunk to a childlike form in a botched assassination attempt, he takes the name Conan Edogawa and is taken in by bumbling private eye Kogoro Mouri (Richard Moore) and his daughter Ran (Rachel), who happens to be Shinichi’s sweetheart. Conan must hide from the international crime organization that changed him, but also finds himself having to solve crimes, despite the fact that first-graders aren’t supposed to be that great at detection. See my reviews of earlier volumes for more details.
Case Closed Volume 63
In the previous volume, Shinichi had taken an experimental antidote that allows him to assume his normal appearance for a few hours–only to spend most of that time separated from his friends. As Volume 63 opens, he finally has an hour or two to spend with Ran as himself…or he would, except that they’ve stumbled across a man strangled to death while alone in a moving automobile! Can Shinichi solve the crime before he shrinks again?
Then Professor Agasa takes the Detective Boys out for sushi on a revolving conveyor belt, only to have an obnoxious food critic be poisoned right by them.
This is followed by a story that the Americanized names makes not make much sense. Genta Kojima’s (George Kaminski in the dub) father is enrolled in a special televised tournament only for people who write “Kojima” with a specific set of kanji (ideograms). In the English version, it’s a contest for people who spell the name “Kaminski” that way. Conan must figure out which of the contestants murdered the organizer of the tournament and why. He’ll just hope it’s not Genta’s never before seen father!
The last story in the volume is the hunt for the “Silver Witch”, a legendary drift racer. She seems to be back from wherever she disappeared to a few years ago, and luring mountain racers into auto accidents in the fog. Has a big twist at the end!
Case Closed Volume 64
Volume 64 opens with the Detective Boys visiting Horn Rock, an isolated islet shunned by fisherfolk due to bad luck (unless you have a child on board.) They find a scuba diver there, dead of starvation, and a curious inscription she wrote. The complication this time is that they are accompanied not by Professor Agasa, but grad student Subaru Okiya, who is not in on Conan’s secret, and on whom Ai (Anita) sometimes detects the scent of the Black Organization. Is he an enemy, or is there something else going on? This is another case that you need to know kanji to solve.
After that, Kogoro Mouri is called in to help a blind heiress discover which of two scarred men is the boy who saved her life as a child. Making matters more urgent, the police believe the one who’s an impostor may in fact be the Whistling Killer one of the cops managed to scar years before.
Once the mystery of the scarred boy is solved, the story flows into the Whistling Killer case proper. The killer did several murders years ago, but seemingly comes out of retirement to kill a man who taunted him on television. Why now, and what is the significance of the song “Let It Be”?
The final chapter is the setup for a Kaito Kid story. The flashy thief has again challenged Sonoko’s (Serena) wealthy uncle by claiming he will steal something from a supposedly theft-proof safe. Or has he? The challenge letter looks wrong, and Conan smells a rat. Just who is the real villain here? Wait for Volume 64 to find out!
Of these stories, I liked the Whistling Man tale the best as it’s good and atmospheric. The two cases that rely on ideograms for clues suffer badly from the erasure of Japanese language for the American version. There’s no movement on the myth arc, other than the suspicious behavior of Subaru Okiya.
Recommended if you are a fan of the series; more casual fans may want to wait for the next volume that has actual plot developments.
The Junior Detectives kick off this volume of Case Closed with the continuation of the murder involving some skilled fishers. It is a good case that while didn't seem that different from others for some reason caught my attention greater than many others. The cover is based off this first story and I think it really makes a great cover along with what I consider the best story of this volume. The next case involved a blind woman who has hired Detective Richard Moore to find the person who saved her who has a scar.... but between the two individuals identified, one is a savior, and one is a killer! The next story has the police working with Detective Conan and Junior Detectives. The final story of this book is not totally complete and it involves the Kaido Kid...or does it? Another exciting volume left with a cliff-hanger story.
There's something really amusing about dated manga. This was written in 1994, and while usually you don't run into anything that screams early-to-mid 90s, this volume did. An old computer, and children who had no idea what a computer mouse was. Though, now that I think about it, kids today might not know what a mouse is because they've only ever used tablets...
This volume contains 3 mysteries and the beginning of a fourth, two of which rely on Japanese to a varying degree. One requires kanji knowledge, while the second requires a little bit of spoken Japanese, though it's the one that only requires a little Japanese is a fairly easy mystery you could probably solve without it. It's kind of nice having an easy one from time to time, though. From a reader's standpoint, anyway.
What a blast of nostalgia! I read Conan for Kanji practice while studying for the JLPT. I picked two volumes of the manga up when I saw them at the library, and I'm so glad I did. Two things surprised me. 1. How much of the meaning I'd managed to decipher despite my poor Japanese. 2. The English names--most people had Japanese names, and then someone in the main cast would go 'hey George' and I would be completely confused.
Great volume with some interconnected plot lines. More intrigue with Subaru helping out with a murder on an island )more like a rock coming out of the ocean). Then they help a blind woman find a boy who helped her in her youth while exposing fraudulent people, whom the police are watching to discover a serial killer from 20 years ago. The Sato and Takagi hit a very welcome milestone in their relationship. Finally we start another Kaito Kid story, to be concluded in the next volume!
I liked the throwback to the previous case that involved fishing! I also liked getting to find out about a certain character's backstory. I was looking forward to a showdown between him and the man from his past, which we didn't get, but besides that the book was great. I love Sato and Takagi so much.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
ISLAND MYSTERY: THE DYING MESSAGE OF THE SEA After a fishing trip, Conan and the Detective Boys and Subaru stumble upon a chilling discovery—a dead woman’s body on Ikkaku Rock. Her final message, written in katakana as the names of fish—Mackerel, Carp, Sea Bream, and Flounder—holds the key to solving the mystery. As the woman’s diving companions reveal her cryptic farewell message, Conan races to decode the hidden clue before the killer escapes.
SCAR OF THE PAST: THE BLIND HEIRESS AND THE HIDDEN IDENTITY A wealthy blind woman hires Kogoro to identify a mysterious boy who once saved her life, now narrowed down to two men—one of whom could be a fraud. But when Conan uncovers police surveillance and learns a scarred serial killer may be lurking among them, the stakes rise. As the suspects are invited to a bath to reveal their scars, a shocking twist emerges when the butler is found to have a matching scar, leaving Conan to unravel who is the true hero—and who is the killer.
THE PSYCHOLOGIST’S FATAL CHALLENGE: A KILLER’S SIGNATURE RETURN When a famed criminal psychologist publicly taunts this scarred serial killer during a TV broadcast, the deadly game turns real. Conan rushes to the psychologist's home, only to find him murdered with a "Z" carved into his back—a gruesome signature matching the killer's past victims from decades ago. With the serial killer's return confirmed, Conan must piece together the dark history to stop the killer before the next strike.
First the detective boys get involved in a case where a mysterious woman's bodxy is found on an island, next the case of a rich woman who looks for the boy who saved her life is uncovered and leads straight into in serial murder case from 20 years ago. Lastly we start into a Kaito Kid case to be continued in the next edition.
It Be nya Inspektur Matsumoto doang.
Eh ngomong2 Inspektur Matsumoto, anaknya Matsumoto apa kabar yah?
