Battle Boy 005 is hurtling through time. Destination: 1587. It's his very first mission for Operation Battle Book! He's supposed to land on Sir Francis Drake's ship. But the GC-Locator isn't working properly. So BB makes a big splash and skis onto a wave - into a fierce battle between English and Spanish warships. The professor orders him to exit ASAP. But BB005 has other plans...
Opening book in the series is really too shallow and brief to be truly engaging and enjoyable. it feels like it could have been something better if time and care was taken to craft a story, rather than just rush it out so another one could be sold very quickly afterwards.
I loved this book - 'Open Fire' is the first of the Battle Boy series - and can't wait to read the entire series. The Battle Boy series is fantastic for young readers who have enjoyed the 'Zac Power' series and want to move on. This too is a spy series with a young protagonist, who time travels into historic battles with 'gadgets galore...'. To quote the publisher website: "(CLASSIFIED) MISSION 1: OPEN FIRE- Spain, 1587, Sir Francis Drake's ship - Mission objective: collect Drake's DNA for the Warrior Gene Bank. OPERATIVE PROFILE: Code name: Battle Boy 005 (BB005)Real name: Napoleon Augustus Smythe Age: 11 years old... Survival gear: SimulSkin (high-tech, skin-coloured body armour)Mission motto: Spying on the past." Since writing this review, I've now read several others of the series, and they are all great - punchy, fast-paced, great historical facts.
