Sonic and Tails from the SEGA games and Archie Sonic comic books battle evil on the journey home in a graphic novel adventure co-starring Lupe and the Wolf Pack.
Sonic and Tails have defeated the evil wizard Ixis Naugus. Now for the hard part: getting home in one piece! It’s one adventure after another as Sonic faces Mutates, Robians, and Kodos’s gang of thugs. All the while, a mysterious presence strikes out at Sonic from space!
Also in this volume you’ll find the entire Wolf Pack saga! Lupe and her pack of Freedom Fighters left home years ago to fight Dr. Robotnik, and now they too must make the long trek home. But the elements are against them, and the Wolf Pack will make a discovery that will change Lupe’s family forever!
Sonic Archives Volume 18 collects Sonic the Hedgehog issues 67-70.
This seems to be a lot more competent than many of the previous books, perhaps because it is willing to let Act One drag through the whole book rather than to rush to tell a three-part story in a single book.
The art seems a little better, too.
The "Lupe" back-up story is baffling. It just throws a lot of characters at you and I have no idea why the author thinks anyone cares about them. That seems to be a continuous problem with the book. The show gave Sonic a whole team and so everyone else is constantly part of a team. The result is that a lot of bad designs and superfluous stuff gets thrown at the reader.
Alright, now we're talking! The last volume ended off the Ixis Naugus saga with a whimper, and I was getting really concerned on how long it was taking this comic to find its footing.
Thankfully this volume really feels like the folks at Archie finally got their ducks in a row. The stories are well structured, lead into each other well, and lack the random endings that have plagued earlier storylines. It's like they actually had a plan for a change!
While the writing here isn't going to win any awards, it actually manages to be consistently fun. I really enjoyed seeing these stories develop, and I'm loving how they're handling the characters. For the first time in a while I'm genuinely excited to read the next volume! Let's hope they can keep up this consistency for a bit!
I began losing interest in the post-"Endgame" stories as it went on, and didn't regain my interest in the comic until the last couple years recently, so I'll say that this is a good read for fans to read the past (if they are "newer" or "more modern" fans).
