Brett Halliday (July 31, 1904 - February 4, 1977), primary pen name of Davis Dresser, was an American mystery writer, best known for the long-lived series of Mike Shayne novels he wrote, and later commissioned others to write. Dresser wrote non-series mysteries, westerns and romances under the names
Not the best book in the series, but has a lot of the familiar Mike Shayne touches—cognac, being shot at, Mike being thought to be on the take. This is the second to last Shayne and it seems a little tired. It takes place at a greyhound track in Miami, a symbol of old Miami, and the folks who want to force a sale so another hotel can be built. Mike is on the long list of people the racecourse owner paid off, and he has to try and clear his name despite being given trouble by the owner’s wife and daughter, the alcoholic manager of the kennel, and a gangster among others. The end is pretty high tech and makes Mike rather a showboat.
