This has been on my shelf for years and it's the sort of thing I would have enjoyed more when I was younger. In fact I absolutely loved the anime series when I saw it at a convention in the 90s. It's your basic shy loser magical girl unrequited love triangle story with some slightly risque humor. Not bad, but probably best for teens or a little older.

3,5 * - Review goes for the whole series

I remember being in awe of the beautiful Art Nouveau covers when Ai was released in the 90’s and that, flipping the pages, the inside art was very nice. But there weren’t enough mechas and guns for my taste so I dropped it.

What to say now: nice fantasy rom-com with superb good girl art but waaaaay too long for its own good.
It starts well with some romance balanced with some funny situations (usually creating or releasing the sexual tension between Youta and Ai) but tends to get more and more melancholic after the 3rd volume. Not that I mind- but Youta moping and wondering pages after pages gets a bit boring after a while. As all these characters unable to make up their mind about their feelings toward each other.

Masazaku has some pretty good intuitions about teenager’s feelings though and write them with (maybe too) much sensibility. There are convincing flows of emotion but I do think he dwells on them for too many pages and chapters.
I’m not totally convinced by the Nobuko part. She had to be there as a substitute to Ai (and Moemi) and it starts well enough but ends up in a bit of confusion. And as cute as she is she looks like she’s 12 yo for chrissakes!
Kamio brings in the few action scenes of the series. Ok. But what was Ai’s creator (in the story, not Masaku) actual intentions? That’s a bit unclear to me.
As for Natsumi I’m afraid she doesn’t add much to the plot except more dispensable pages.
Ok, it looks that I didn’t like the series that much but that’s not true. The ending (Vol. 13) was very cute and worth totally the read but a more tightened plot would have won an easy full 4* rating.

Art wise the storytelling is good and the very few action scenes very decent. Settings are well designed.
The girls are, simply put, beautifully drawn. Ai is the shining star of course but Moemi and Nobuki are gorgeous as well. Be warned there are several slightly erotic scenes: If you’re offended by female teenagers full frontal nudes you may want to skip this series.
Facial expressions and body language are very nicely rendered and the exaggerated comics scenes are actually funny.

The last two volumes are totally dispensable, vaguely related to the main story through Youta and more "childish" in their treatment.

Review for volumes 1 - 13

A Note on Katsura Masakazu
Masakazu's works are oddly diverse and formulaic at the same time. He likes to dab in romantic comedies while also producing works about superheroes that are heavily inspired by US comics. I've only ever delved into his romantic comedies and they usually follow a very particular pattern: average guy pines for a pretty long-haired brunette until a short-haired tomboy makes her entrance. It turns into a love triangle that is soon extended to a third girl who is also a long-haired brunette. At least one of the long-haired brunettes is bound to cut their hair in an attempt to mimic the tomboy. Even though Katsura sticks to this formula, the plot outside of the love story is often refreshing and complex. And while the basic premise of his love stories is the same, you can never be sure about the outcome.

Yota is low in confidence and luck with love. He is in love with Moemi who only seems to have eyes for his popular best friend Takashi. Wanting the best for her, Yota takes on the role of being her friend and supporting her with getting closer to Takashi. One day, a mysterious video store appears from which Yota borrows a tape starring Ai Amano. To his surprise, once he plays the videotape, Ai jumps right out of his TV screen and declares that it is her mission to support him with his love endeavours.

Video Girl Ai is not without its faults but it's a very worthy classic with multiple interesting aspects to it. Given that this story plot is based on videotapes, it can feel a little odd reading this late 80's classic in current times. The setting can feel a little dated, it's particularly obvious in the lack of modern devices (the majority of misunderstandings could have been avoided if the characters had mobile phones, oops.) and the characters clothing. This wouldn't usually bother me, and it doesn't do so here either, but the fact that it is based on media devices does make this difference feel more obvious.

Katsura has a very unique art style - it's clearly a manga but then he also tends to lean into realism which is even more evident in his later works. For this manga in particular, there is quite a nice blend of more realistic-looking moments. I especially appreciate this for his female characters. Given that this is by a male author with largely a male audience in mind, yes, there is definitely fanservice. But unlike many others, the girls are drawn beautifully and realistically. There are several nude scenes and while I am not usually one for fan service or smut (I wouldn't say there is any actual smut in this manga, though), these drawings are definitely tastefully done.

Yota as a character and his love life are complicated, to say the least. It's actually rather interesting that he is considered such an unpopular guy at school because, as far as I'm concerned, he's a perfectly nice guy and has by far the modest handsome design of all male characters in this series. Be that as it may, while I do consider him a nice guy, there are moments where I feel frustrated with him. He can be very self-centred, dense and fickle. It seems like an odd mixture - on one hand, he puts other people first and the cost of his own happiness. But then the next moment he is so oblivious and causes hurt left and right.

I've felt very sorry for both Moemi and Ai and Yota's constant swaying emotions. There was, of course, also Nobuko, the third girl that always makes an entrance in Katsura's works. She was cute in a way but I felt less sorry for her because I actually found her a little obnoxious and she constantly got angry with Yota when he didn't even do anything wrong. Ai and Moemi, on the other hand, were both very likeable and I would have been happy for either of them to end up with Yota. I didn't like some of the changes Katsura made to Moemi later in the series. Sure, she got the curve again, but somehow her behavioural changes were beneath her and didn't do her character any justice. Sadly, Takashi was also a character who didn't get his due. While he didn't seem like the nicest guy at first, through Ai we get to see his good sides as well and I wish things would have turned out differently for him.

Even though there are a lot of moments of frustration in regards to misunderstandings, characters behaving selfishly or just not being honest with each other, it is actually part of what makes this a good manga. Take Yota, his actions aren't always great and it makes it harder to sympathise with him. Yet it makes him a more realistic character who is stuck between genuinely caring for others but also getting caught up in his own desires and how to make them both align.

I should also note that this review is only for volumes 1 - 13. Video Girl Ai officially has 15 volumes, but the remaining two are about new characters and feel more like a sequel than an actual part of Ai's story. You can safely only read until volume 13 and have a perfectly complete story.

This was such a fun time. It gave me so many nostalgic feelings with the drawing style, storytelling and of course the VCR! I may try to pick this series up physically! I can’t wait to read more!

Been a fan of Katsura for a long time. Loved his series I''s (though I must say, read a fan translation, it'll be much better). I really like the direction this series seems to be headed. For once it seems we may have a genuine "good guy" as opposed to just a loser that doesn't have the nerve to be a jerk. And I like that we find out incredibly quickly that (spoiler for chapter 1-2) the main love interest doesn't have a thing for him. Much as I loved I''s, I don't really need another "does she like me?" story. This does a good job of using the scifi elements to ground itself in reality without letting it become boring. Hope the quality stays at this level.

Edit: I didn't finish the series when I initially reviewed this one, never could find the second half of the series in my usual used bookstores, so I'm restarting it now. I actually bought the last half in preparation for being on lockdown, but instead had overtime for a year straight, funny how common sense isn't. Anyway, this one has actually grown on me more. Originally the dated art was sort of a barrier to entry, especially with Masakazu being my second favorite artist in the game, behind Takeshi Obata, and this just doesn't stand up to his later stuff like I''s and Zetman. I do stand by my initial review and how refreshing the main character is, being an actual decent guy instead of your typical incel. The concept is cute, and I like the situation a lot where Moteuchi is actually close with the girl he likes, but knows she likes someone else. That's a way better scenario than drooling over some attractive girl he's never actually spoken to, which is so often the case.

Although I only gave this 2-stars, it's more because it's not my preferred genre than a lack of quality. The story should work well for those who enjoy a slighly ecchi, seinen romantic-comedy, it's just not quite to my taste. Additionally, Viz had some notable translation, typo, and overall editing problems that detracted.

Video Girl Ai is a timeless gem that effortlessly blends heartfelt romance, gentle comedy, and coming-of-age tenderness, all brought to life through Katsura’s stunning artistry. The character design is nothing short of exquisite—Ai, in particular, is drawn with a delicate yet captivating beauty that frames both her charm and emotional complexity. The narrative is engaging and emotionally resonant, striking a fine balance between light-hearted moments and deeper reflections on love, loneliness, and self-discovery. Each character is infused with distinct personality, making their relationships feel authentic and affecting. With its elegant visuals and enduring emotional appeal this manga remains a luminous classic of romantic manga.
***

What struck me most about Masakazu Katsura's "Video Girl Ai" (other than the dated illustration style, which I admire), was how it was one of the first teen romance series I have read where a male lead seems to have the same insecurities of young love that is often a plot structure for teenage girls.

It is not a mind blowing start, but still a solid start to what could be a strong coming of age tale. For that, I look forward to reading the next book in the series, and the rest of the series to come.

Eh I almost didn't read this because of the way the main love interest girl was introduced, which was without a shirt, but since I picked up a couple of issues for free I thought might as well. Definitely not worth going out of your way to find. Very fanservice-y but at least the main guy isn't a total creep. Just a shy kid who can't talk to girls. The story line is just okay. It's a standard highschool love triangle type plot just with an AI girl.

Consigliato :)

This one’s a throwback but I did enjoy the trip down memory lane from the anime. Always loved the art style of DNA2 so this one was a no brainer. Typical manga storyline but an early adoption of common tropes in anime today.
