In New Domino City, the hottest game in town is the Turbo Duel, fought from blazingly fast motorcycles called Duel Runners. On the outskirts of New Domino City, in a district known as Satellite, a new Turbo Duel hero emerges--Yusei Fudo! On his custom-built Duel Runner, Yusei takes on all challengers, fighting for his friends and the future of Satellite!
DUEL DRAGONS!!
Yusei has made it into the second round of the D1 Grand Prix, but his friend Sect has made a dark pact with the ominous Skeleton Knight in exchange for the powerful Shadow Card. Yusei learns that he’ll need a special card to free Sect, and the only way to get it is to win the tournament!
5D's continues to expand its manga lore as the D1 Grand Prix continues; with turbo duels and intrigue aplenty. Volume 3 introduces a few new characters in the form of twins Luna and Leo who are tasked with taking out unworthy participants. The concept of Duel Dragons also begins; which for now are powerful dragon synchro monsters of unknown origin. We also learn a bit more about the shadow cards; but very little.
The duels this collection are enjoyable. We see Akiza go up against Kalin's "handless combo." I quite enjoyed Kalin's playstyle and the art for this duel was great. Jack also takes on Sect, wanting his shadow card. Lastly Yusei has to go up against the twins, who have a duel dragon of their own. I appreciated the expansion of lore and stakes we got this volume; as it introduces overarching narrative beats we'll see for the rest of the series.
It is interesting to see Leo and Luna acting as villains instead of being supporters and I do like they still keep Leo as the protective big brother. They also start showing off the duel dragons which is interesting as they seem to be evil versions of the Signer Dragons from the anime which will be interesting to see where they go with it.
Anyone who has known me long enough will know that I am a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan, of all the series. But 5ds holds a special place in my heart. When I first picked up volume 1,I was skeptical. What if they ruined the image of my beloved signers? And after I read the first volume, I felt as if the series might fall a little flat cause it wasn't as exciting as the anime. It's a good thing I stuck with it! Starting from volume 2, things really picked up. Yusei entered the grand Prix and we are introduced to secondary characters from the anime, like sherry, in a whole new light, which was nice. Also, they brought in Crow, my fav :p.(His OTK was AWESOME!!)The overall conflict was introduced and expanded on in vol 3, which are the shadow cards. This was a concept introduced in the third season of the anime and which I always thought was a wasted opportunity. It ends with Luna and Leo being introduced as bad-ass "mercenaries" in a way and they duel against Yusei.
This will continue to be a series I'll read when volumes are around and I have time, because it's action-packed, and therefore, is a quick-read. But, I wouldn't push other series aside to read it, and I doubt I would like the anime series, either. Akiza, the heroine, continued to have frilly girly monsters in this volume as well. That continues to annoy me. And, this volume had a set of twins named Luna and Leo that had a practically unstoppable deck. That also bothers me. Other than those annoying factors, it is a decently fun series to read. At least, YGO! is still a decent manga series, unlike Pokemon. --------------- This volume was provided to me by VIZ Media via Edelweiss, as an eARC, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own. ---------------
Mr. Hikokubo did it again like always. His yugioh manga is just that great. It throws me off edge sometimes cause it has nothing to do with the anime storyline. But that's what I love most about it. Keep up the good work
