Know Your Cows

Rate this book
Did you know that the Dexter breed of cattle stands hardly taller than a St. Bernard dog? They specialize in browsing low-quality vegetation. Did you know that Devon cattle were the first pure breed in America, arriving in the Plymouth colony with the Pilgrim fathers? This little book introduces adults and children alike to popular breeds of cattle. Each breed gets a spread featuring a color photograph and a full discussion of identifying characteristics, plus a write-up about the breed’ s history, personality, milk-producing habits, and suitability for the small farm. With this little book in hand, you’ ll be able to impress your friends by identifying any cow you happen to encounter, almost anywhere in the world.

A small field guide like birdwatchers carry in the field to id birds, only this one is for cows. There is a nice color photograph of each cow with a description on the facing page. I was a little worried that the author was British but the major American cows all seem to be present and accounted for.

This book is not as funny as A Field Guide to Cows: How to Identify and Appreciate America's 52 Breeds but that one is illustrated with black & white sketches.
