Myrnin's Tale is a short story present on Rachel Caine's blog archive. It is a Morganville Short Story.

This story came about just because I wanted to know more about Myrnin for my own understanding of his character, and sometimes, the best way to achieve that is to write a character’s history from his/her point of view. The character tells me what’s important, and what changed, for better or worse. Discovering that Myrnin’s father had some type of mental disorder was important to me, because of course when he was born, such things weren’t really understood. When I was working on the draft of the first book in which Myrnin appeared, my co-worker who read it said, ‘Oh, you’ve written a bipolar character, and he’s actually really cool! Did you know that I take medication for that?’ She went on to relate all the ways he was familiar to her. I was amazed, and honoured. I won’t name the co-worker, for privacy, but I say now, as then: thank you for sharing your story with me, and you know who you are. I hope Myrnin continues to make you proud.

It had just gotten my interest when it ended. Aaaaaargh. Maybe one day we'll get a nice spinoff novel about Myrnin. He's the only reason I still read the series. Myrnin x Claire! Though it's becoming increasingly obvious that that isn't going to happen. I suspect I'll quit reading soon. I need the Myrnin x Claire fan service to keep me interested. Claire needs some hot vampire professor romance. Myrnin seems to like her enough and when Claire's not being willfully blind she notices Myrnin's sexiness. So... give us a present Ms. Caine- allow Myrnin to make his move! I don't care if Shane dies or if Myrnin steals Claire right under his nose- as long as it happens.

Truthfully the three stars are generous, simply because Myrnin is my favourite character throughout the series.

This little snippet is nothing more than the tale of how Myrnin is passed off from his mother to his mentor. It does not reflect his change into a vampire or his steady decline into insanity. Honestly, with his character there was a whole lot which could have been written and yet this is all we’re given.

Frankly, I feel cheated…

This is exactly the kind of the thing I want from an extra, usually in the other outtakes and extras we see something that isn't exactly abnormal in Morganville and generally you just get a sense of deja vu but this was new.

I love Myrnin, he's one of my favourite characters in the Town and it was nice to finally see some history from his, possible reasons to explain why he is who he is.

It's tragic that ultimately, Myrnin couldn't escape himself and his father's fate and instead was consumed by the one thing he dreaded most. Sadder still is that at the end, he admitted to being content with it, he had learnt to accept his fear as reality.

Reading this, my love for Myrnin has increased even more! <3

A look at Myrnin's life as a boy and how he ended up doing alchemy and wizardry. It seems Myrnin always knew he would go crazy some day. His father was crazy and his mother got rid of him fearing that Myrnin would one day become crazy like his father, so she got rid of him when someone told her that they wanted to apprentice him.

Turns out that someone was a vamp. A really old vamp. And that's how Myrnin came to be how he is.

How I love Myrnin, so I really loved reading this.

A few sentences in and I was tearing up. This was a hard read. Myrnin is one of my favorite characters ever. And to hear the tale of his upbringing. It's almost as if fate had doomed him from the start.

To know that probably no one truly knew him, or ever truly loved him - and that he wasn't capable. It's just heartbreaking.

I'm one of those who always wondered about him being with Claire. There's something there; but it's probably not enough.

I love Myrnin, he is by far one of the funniest vampire/men/characters in any of the books I have ever read.

I cant help but feel sorry that his childhood was spent facing his mad father who they kept chained up and being told he faced the same fate. And I cant help but feel glad that he was "rescued" from this by Gwion, even if this path did lead to Myrnin being turned into a vampire.

What I would like to see is another story for Myrnin, maybe him as a young man/newly turned vampire.

Myrnin has quickly become one of my favorite vampires ever, so I liked this story because it gave some more information about his backstory, but it was extremely short and doesn't necessarily answer any of the many questions I'd have about this character.

Just when I finally started to get into the story- it ended! I love Myrnin, but this just didn’t do it for me. I would love for him to get his own book so that we can get a real insight on his character, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s likely.

Myrnin's Tale is a sad, overwhelming and unusual story written in the point of view of Claire Danvers's mad boss, Myrnin. It's a short story about The Morganville Vampires series and illustrates the events of Myrnin as a child.

Myrnin, from the Morganville Vampires is known to be an old, ancient figure but with a young appearance. He is one of the oldest vampires who live in Morganville and is known to have mad phases that consequence his personality completely changing at times. Sometimes these phases lead him to forget people around him and how vulnerable some of his friend are in contrast with him.

Myrnin Tale tells the story of Myrnin's life, as a child, was and describes the relationships between him and his family. The relationships are shocking, one of them really sad but i don't want to include any spoilers! Ride along and find out how Myrnin was exploited as an apprentice to an unusual master with a hidden secret.

Rachel Caine has again told a compelling tale, using immense detail to include the reader in the story. She includes heavy descriptions with descriptive language, describing scenes with effect making you aware of the surroundings and the scenes of the story the characters go through. The story contains many emotions such as sadness, empathy, shock, excitement, confusion and many more. It's a totally different story to other ones she has wrote and helps you understand Myrnin's character displayed in 'Morganville Vampires'. It includes new ideas which are very common in Rachel Caine's writing, which makes her stories so good to read! She has written in an elegant way which indulges you in the story's secrets and events feeding you information that you never knew before! The language used is swifft with a nice flick of excitement and exotic, hidden twists.

It's a beautiful, pleasing and enticing story including tenderness and admiration towards Myrnin and gives you a chance to see the world through Myrnin's eyes. A magnificent story with a slow-pace that enables you to feel, live and re-live moments of Myrnin's past.

I recommend this story to readers who have read the Morganville Vampires as then you have more understanding with his character. For other readers, i strongly recommend reading the original books before reading this short story.

Note: This is the first story presented in the Midnight Bites collection, which is part of the Morganville Vampires Series. On the Table of Contents, there is mention that all of the short stories are presented in order of timeline within the series. Very cool, but since I'm new to the series and have only completed through the second full-length novel, I do not think that I have met Myrnin yet.

Myrnin's Tale is the story of how Myrnin became an "apprentice" at a young age, and against his wishes. His father died when he was young. The decision to send him away was made by his mother, and it broke my heart. I felt sad for Myrnin throughout this very short story, particularly in the second half of it. Just when the story felt like it could potentially pick up in terms of excitement and maybe even action, it ended. Bah!

I wish there was just a little more beyond this ending.

I don't know Myrnin from the full-length novels yet, but since his story is first in the collection chronologically - even before Amelie's Story - I'm very interested! I typically enjoy "older" vampires plus Myrnin has a pretty interesting family history. I have no clue when he will pop up in this series, but I will be watching for him!

I am on the fence when it comes to Myrnin. I love him and I am extremely wary of him. Would I trust him with my life - that depends on the situation.

The title of this extra had me curious; I've wanted to learn more about Myrnin since the first time we met him in the books. So my expectations were high. Too high for an extra.

This particular installment gave us a good look at Myrnin's childhood. It does give an idea on why he is as twisted as he is. It is well written and I enjoyed reading it; however, it also whetted my appetite for MORE!

As Myrnin is a scientist, I am betting there are journals that could be uncovered to give us more about his apprenticeship, transformation, and life between then and what we know now.

Of course, he is a shadowy and shifty character, but I don't think he would lose any of his mystique if we knew more.

This was really good. It ended too quickly...I want more. :)

As quick as I started this, I finished it! For years I’ve been trying to searching for this, wanting to read it and finally, I did!

I would have liked to give it 5 stars, but 4 is generous enough. Especially because I was expecting more than what I got. While sure, this beginning is part of what shaped him, it’s not enough. Because in Myrnin’s world, this would have been so long ago, there would have been more events in his life that would have triggered him and shaped him into the crazy, scary but awesomely cool vampire he is in the Morganville series.

Alas, this snippet left me a tad disappointed, but I am happy I finally found it. For those who have still yet to read this series, what the heck are you doing with your life?

Myrnin's Tale is a short story in The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine. Myrnin is my favourite character in this series. I love the handsome, eccentric, wacky, mad scientist with the occasional need to eat his assistants. This short story is Myrnin's story and told from his point of view. It is far too short for the great mind of Myrnin. In this short story, we learn that Myrnin's father was mad and his mother was abusive, cruel, and neglectful. She sold Myrnin to a vampire to work as his apprentice in alchemy, wizardry, and science. The Story ends there.

For those of you who are Morganville Vampire Fans, I am sure that like me, you have wondered as to why Myrnin is as crazy as he is. Well, "Myrnin's Tale" reveals his early life as a human and how is father was considered crazy before he died. This really is not a funny story. It is tragic and sad providing greater insight as to why Myrnin was destined to be the way he is and how he becomes a vampire. It is short, sweet and to the point.

Myrnin is a great and very interesting character, so I really enjoyed this glimpse into his childhood. It seems that his life was hard from the beginning. His father was a madman kept in chains, and his mother was eager to get rid of him.

Such a sad, but insightful story that reveals how Myrnin got involved with the vampires, how old he is, and why he knows so much about alchemy and wizardry.

Loved this!

Myrnin’s Tale

I want more from this novella. I feel like I didn’t get enough of the beloved Myrnin. I like how we did get to see a little peak at his childhood though. The parts about his dad being crazy and how they found him dead and nobody ended up at his funeral.

I do like the ending. How it ended with;

“I am Myrnin, son of a madman, apprentice to Gwion, and master of nothing. And content I am to be that.”
