Short but very good story about a contract surgeon and her lover, Admiral Lord North.
The action takes place on board a ship fighting the Fram pirates. The Ang Empire (where our heroes work) is fighting to keep the seaways safe. In the course of that they must contend with octopi who wish to "talk" with them about things going on in the sea. The surgeon is asked to be the one to handle the next talk and they learn some very interesting facts.
This is followed by "Memory of Morning."

Excellent short story epilogue to a Fantastic novel. Dearly hope there are more stories, of any length to come, for this pair.

A very short story set a year after Memory of Morning. Barely more than a vignette for fans. But if you are one you have to get it :-) Who wouldn't like to read about octopuses?
