Raised as human, but branded a demon, Blaze Makaresh finds himself fleeing two forces--demons intent upon claiming him as their prince and a group of ruthless hunters set on destroying him before he can ascend to the throne. His only hope of survival is Asha Lemarche, a lovely ex-demon hunter with an addiction to Blood Rain.
Asha's determined to leave her violent past behind, but her attachment to Blaze places her in direct conflict with her former master. Soon it's her life on the line. Only the fierce sexual attraction that binds her to Blaze offers any form of salvation. In order to keep her alive, Blaze will have to sacrifice his own tenuous freedom. An act that results in a transformation none of them predicted.

I've been trying to figure out why I was struggling to write this review.
I think it was because I read about half of this on the Kindle and had the Kindle read me about half of the book. I was fine with the half I read. I got a little lost on some of the parts read to me.
It didn't always seem clear as to whom we were following when I was listening to the story. I'd have to stop the TtS and re-read a section I had just listened to. This was particularly true at the beginning of a chapter.
I liked the characters and found them enjoyable to follow. I especially liked the blurred lines of good and evil drawn between the demons and the humans who hunted them. Who were the real demons in this story?
The author is known for her published erotica, and she's tossed some into this story, breaking some taboos along the away, without losing sight of the plot.
The action scenes were fun and the pacing is pretty quick throughout.
There were a few questions regarding a secondary character that, I felt, should have been addressed in this novel, but maybe the author intends to reveal those answers in her second book. Even so, there should have been some way to show that they were not completely forgotten, as it appeared they had been.
Despite the issues I had with this story, I am looking forward to the next book in the series to find out what will happen next to the characters.
I've read quite a few of Madelynne's books and this is an urban fantasy (not much smut) and I'm used to reading her mmf historicals so this was a little different for me.
Good world building, characters, a main bad guy who's poisoned others to his rhetoric, and a reincarnated demon and demon hunter lovers. Really good story just missed the sexin' (lol) so it seemed a bit longer to me. Of course, I don't really read urban fantasy for that reason.
But if you like urban fantasy - I highly recommend this story. You can't figure out what's going on at the beginning but it does become clear as you go on.
It throws you right into the story without bothering to explain a whole lot, and by the end of it, most of what transpired in the beginning is still left unanswered. There was no introduction to the characters, and overall, little character development was actually done. We are aware that Asha and Blaze knew each other for a total of two days, and are bound to each other--apparently, but not certainly, after they had sex, which happened prior to us meeting them, and was only briefly touched upon; yet again, was not entirely explained. You're left to flounder in the little pieces of information you are given while trying to keep up with the rapid pace of the book. There was very little world buildup. I still have no idea what was really going on in the city, how the city became the way it was, or what this prophecy really had to do with anything. There was no explanation of the lore, and that really made things difficult to keep together. Things just took place in this book, and there was no way to know if anything was out of character or miraculous, because you had no idea these things could even take place--or not. I did not care for the structure of the book. You are given a few character's POV, but you are still not given much insight to what type of character they truly are. Talon, for example, was a character I really would have liked to have had the chance to get to know and understand. How did he get to his position? Why were the Demon Hunters dressed in dresses when all bar one of them were male? How did he concoct his elaborate plan? Asha was a confusing character. I never really got a feel for where she really stood. It was said that she was hoping Blaze would keep his humanity, but there was no true understanding of their relationship. It just was. And it just progressed without anything to stand behind it. I didn't really feel any connection between her and Blaze. Actually, the only true connection I felt for any of the characters, was the relationship between Blaze and Raven.
I don't know. The delivery of this book was just not adequate for all the ideas going on in here. I feel like I'm missing a lot of the story.
There were quite a few errors in this book. They became an eyesore later in the book, as that was when they showed up in abundance.
I don't think I will be bothering with the next book, mainly because I just found this one too difficult to follow and make sense of.
I felt that the book was hard to follow through. It took me over a week to finish it. While demon/gothic genre isn't exactly my scene. The description if the city was quite intriguing..I found that while there was no definite year suggested it could easily occur in the past it in the future. The antagonist reminded me of dictators of our past spouting rhetoric of fear to enslave the masses. Only takes one to break free to rescue, join, and eventually love "the enemy". While reading was a bit slow for me until I got half way through the book-then my interest was definitely piqued! Some books start off already in the swing of things..this book is such and I felt kinda lost in the beginning...how was Blaze captured? Aside from his beauty, what finally made Asha decide to help him escape? All in all, I enjoyed the book. Considering i'm a romance junkie...I was particularly drawn by how the "enemy" saved Asha after her death-which totally blindsided me!
Please forgive any spoilers I may have revealed...this is my first time reviewing a book on goodreads.
The main characters in this book are Blaze & Asha and 3 other sub-characters. Asha has saved Blaze from Talon, whom she works for, killing him. Blaze has no real memories....
I feel like I started in the middle of the book. I felt like I had missed a lot of detail...like there was a volume prior to this that ended in a cliffhanger and I was reading the next volume. I don't feel like I got to the know the characters like I should have, it was so vague. The story took place over 1 or 2 days.
What I do know is that Blaze & Asha did care about one another. Talon, the demon hunter is a really sick twisted man and Raven know much more than he is saying.
This book is Post-Apocalyptic, which is not a genre I really care for. Would I read another book by this author? Sure, just not this genre.
Mix of apocalyptic/punk(-goth)..Unique. Beginning was a little confusing I felt like I missed something. Perhaps as a previous review stated- a kindle tts thing- I was hooked after a few chapters. Great for those who like a darker rough around the edges fantasy. Another author I'll keep my eye on.
