Sonic the Hedgehog is the longest running video game-inspired hit comic ever!
Signalling a momentous change for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sonic the Hedgehog Archives 19 features flashbacks, time-twisting plots, and the reappearance of important figures long thought dead. Sonic himself is transformed to his contemporary form, as King Elias returns to reclaim his throne in the Kingdom of Acorn... and all of our heroes brace for the return of their greatest adversary.
SONIC ARCHIVES VOLUME 19 collects issues #71-74 of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book.
This series got good fast. After being plagued by inconsistent writing, rushed endings, and poorly planned out story arcs, it seems like everyone involved suddenly learned how to write a continuous story.
The writing is also getting a bit more creative. They do some somewhat necessary legwork to get Sonic's appearance to match the Sonic Adventure look of the time, and to remove the weird story element that Knothole Village is 3-hours in the future. This was a pointless story element that never got used, so I'm glad they got rid of it. There's also some decent job filling in backstory and polishing some of the rough edges in the early story telling. They don't exactly retcon anything, but they do manage to make it make more sense than it ever has, and that's an achievement.
It's been interesting reading all the old Sonic comics, but most of it has honestly felt like a chore. Thankfully things are kicking into gear and I'm 100% on board for the direction this is going.
