For small-town sheriff Boone Harrison, the investigation into a serial rapist turned killer is painfully personal. Boone's priority is to find the coward who murdered his sister. But to accomplish that, he'll have to work with Dr. Kate Kilpatrick, a secretive woman whose striking beauty and kind heart just may be the lawman's undoing….
Forensic psychologist Kate Kilpatrick was wrong about Sheriff Harrison. He's smarter and more resourceful than she'd given him credit for—and entirely too attractive. In their combined grief, Kate finds something she didn't even know she needed: protection. Because when the Rose Red Rapist sets his sights on Kate, she'll need more than the power of the badge to save her. She'll need her very own cowboy.

Very good book. The KCPD is still trying to find the Rose Red Rapist. The latest victim has also been murdered. That victim's brother has come to town, looking for answers. When his search starts to interfere with the official investigation, Kate gets put in charge of working with him - or keeping him from causing problems. She is the profiler, and also the media rep. This puts her in the public eye and when things start happening to her, Boone is there for her. There is also an attraction between the two of them, but both have trust issues as both were cheated on by their spouses. I really enjoyed Boone's protectiveness, but also the way that he respected Kate's mind and the way she did her job. I liked seeing the way that Kate's mind worked, as she tried putting clues together from the various crime scenes. There were a couple of interesting twists in this story that once they happened I could see where the clues were. I haven't decided if there were clues in the story as to the identity of the Rapist, or if I'm imagining it. I can't believe the next one won't be out until next year -- I don't want to wait!
Kanas City Cowboy by Julie Miller 4 STARS Sheriff Boone Harrison gets told that his little sister was raped and murdered in the big city. Now this rapist has now upped his violence to murder. She is at the scene where the body was dumped talking to reporters when A cowboy with a gun pulled her away and started to demand answers. Kate helped Boone with some answers and when her car was defaced and blood used to threaten her he is thier to help her. Boone plans to spend time helping to catch his sister's killer and when he finds out that Kate is getting text threats he lets her boss of the task force know and he agrees to help protect her. I liked it but have problem of the next book in the series not coming out till 2013. The problem i have with the story is he should not be in with his sister's body while the medical examiner is working on her. Thier were some twists that I guessed right and some I did not see coming. I liked Kate character and would love to see more of her in upcoming books. I was given this book to read in exchange of honest reviews from Netgalley. 08/01/2012 PUB. Harlequin Imprint Harlequin Intrigue 224 pages
Boone Harrison is a small town sheriff who just found out his sister was raped and murdered in the big town of Kansas City. He comes to the town to find out what happened and to help – in his own way that may get him in some trouble with local law enforcement.
Kate Kilpatrick is a forensic psychologist who works for the police department both as their PR person for the media and as a counselor for employee problems they may have.
The Red Rose Rapist has been terrorizing the Kansas City area for several years however this is the first time someone was murdered. The police try to stem the tide of panic as they try to investigate the rape and murder hoping to finally catch the person responsible.
A great suspenseful read to the end with a twist I was not expecting. I really enjoyed both Boone and Kate; they have both been hurt in a similar way in the past and have a hard time with trusting. There seems to be an immediate spark between them and although deep into the investigation of the murder, their relationship develops into something more. When danger comes to Kate twice in a short amount of time both Boone and Kate realize that they must make the leap to trust one another. I am looking forward to the next story.
Small town sheriff Boone Harrison;s life comes to a halt when he finds out his sister was murdered by a serial rapist, known as the Rose Red Rapist. Wanting the man caught before he can do it again, while trying to grieve he finds himself working alongside Dr. Kate Kilpatrick who is a Forensic psychologist and working with the task force set up to stop the maniac before he attacks again. Although they try not to cross the invisible line, they cannot resist the chemistry between them, but both have issues with their past that have them questioning trust with one another.
In Miller’s romantic suspense novel, Sheriff Boone Harrison finds the on-going investigation into a serial rapist turned killer strikes too close to home. His sister was raped and murdered and Boone’s new priority in life is to find justice for Jane. Teaming with forensic psychologist Dr. Kate Kilpatrick, they fight the blossoming passion flaring between them while they focus on capturing the Rose Red Rapist who now has his sights set on her.
An action-packed, surprised filled edition to The Precinct Task Force series.
I'm not really big on cowboy romances. But I do really like Julie Miller's series on the Kansas City precinct. (Which Kansas City is it, by the way?)
This one is a lot of fun. It's different. The two main characters are mature, they're professionals. They have also had really tragic pasts. And, all through this, is the continuing storyline of the Rose Red Rapist which began in the previous book and continues after this one.
I think that's a great plot device to connect these books. Usually in romance series, they're only connected by characters. Well on to the next one!
I really liked this book alot-I like her books alot! Boone and Kate at first bumped heads but then the chemisty between them started to sizzle. He's a true cowboy, loyal and want to protect the person he loves...the story kept me on my toes on who is the Red Rose Rapist..I don't want to say too much for the other readings to find out on their own on who killed Boone's sister Jane-I was quite surprized!another good book for Julie Miller...can't wait for her next book!
This book reads as a standalone, but is the second book in - The Precinct: Task Force series. This series is one of my favorites. I've read all the books more than once.
In this book KCPD is trying to find the Rose Red Rapist. The last victim was also murdered. The victim's brother is a sheriff for a small city. He is also the oldest brother. His parents died years ago, and he has taking on the responsibility of taking care, and looking after his brothers, and sister. Boone takes his sister's death really hard. He feels it is up to him to find out who killed her. He goes to Kansas City looking for answers.
Kate Kilpatrick is a psychologist that works for KCPD, and she is on the task force to find the Rose Red Rapist. She now has been handed another task. That is to stick close to Boone Harrison, the small town sheriff. The police department does not want Boone to run his own investigation. Boone, and Kate are attracted to one another from the start. Both have been hurt in the past. They took things slow, and sweet. I loved how protective Boone was when Kate became the target. He volunteered to be her body guard, when Kate wanted to make herself bait, to draw out the Rapist.
The suspense, and action was really good throughout the book. The KCPD has several suspects. What they thought was one case, turned out to be three different crimes, 3 different suspects. Loved this book!
Favorite Lines: “He knew he’d surprised her, knew he was taking liberties with a woman he barely knew. But he needed human contact right now. He needed the reassurance of a beating heart. he needed something strong to hold on to, something soft to absorb the pain and the rage and the grief rolling inside him that threatened to drag him down to his knees and bring him to tears.” (p. 31, e-galley)
Does it get much sexier than a smart cowboy? Well, I figured I find out by reading Julie Miller’s Kansas City Cowboy.
If you’re unfamiliar with Harlequin’s Intrigue line all you need to know is that it is the line that promotes romantic suspense stories. One of the good things about it is at the beginning of each novel the reader is given a list of characters. The cast list includes the hero, heroine, important secondary characters and the villain. It’s a great way to know exactly what is going on before turning the first page of the book. So, let’s get back to Kansas City Cowboy.
Heroine: Dr. Kate Kilpatrick is intelligent woman who was betrayed by her husband and best friend. She copes with it by not allowing people to get close to her. Until Sheriff Boone Harrison appears and pulls her into a bear hug. She doesn’t have time to strictly focus on him though. An escalating rapist has her in his sights and with all the risks she takes, she just might end up dead.
Hero: Sheriff Boone Harrison’s sister was raped and murdered. As her oldest sibling, Boone plans to find his sister’s killer and leaves his jurisdiction for that of Kansas City. Once there he meets Dr. Kate and feels a spark of attraction. He isn’t ready to follow-up on it though. He needs to bury his sister and see her killer brought to justice.
Villain: The Rose Red Rapist has been taking what he wants and leaving women behind. The reader is given glimpses of him, but never gets to really see him. Eventually it becomes clear that there may be more than one bad guy making the rounds in Kansas City Cowboy. Unfortunately, we find out many things
Suspense, Romance and Sex: The suspense builds as Dr. Kate is stalked. Classic stalker techniques are used: text messages, break ins and the sound of footsteps. At the same time Boone and Kate are spending more time together with a slow burning attraction. There is sex, but not only does it relieve the tension, but it also leads the heroine to feelings of self-empowerment.
End Thoughts: I was bored with Kansas City Cowboy. The conflict didn’t feel like it was between the rapist and the main characters. I felt more internal battles fought inside Kate’s mind with herself and her former best friend, than I felt between the rapist/stalker and the police. The mystery aspect of the story was alright, but it never sucked me in. I felt semi-cheated when I finished reading the book. (Read the spoiler.) There were moments when I wanted to shake the heroine for being TSTL. I guess it just wasn’t the book for me. Maybe you’ll feel different. Did you read it? What are your thoughts? Scooper Speaks
Not a bad read and has me wanting to read more in this mini-series. I want to know who the Red Rose Rapist is and if we actually met him in this book. I'm thinking we did and maybe just maybe I know who it is...
Both leads in this book have a common experience in infidelity and it plays a major role in some of the problems they encounter as they start to act on their amazing chemistry.
Kate is the Kansas City Police Department Forensic Psychologist and also acts as the public face for a task force investigating a serial rapist who may have just added murder to his repertoire. She was cheated on by her husband and best friend which was brutally revealed to her when he had a fatal heart attack in the midst of a tryst. She still has to deal with the ex-best friend and has shut off her heart and ability to trust anything other than her work since that time. She is directed to handle Boone by the task force as he wants to barge in on this investigation due to the murder victim being his baby sister. She also is having to deal with being targeted by an unknown assailant driven to leave messages on her vehicle and violate the sanctity of her home.
Boone is a small town sheriff burned by his now ex-wife who not only cheated on him but trashed his love of the small town and being comfortable with the country/ranch life. He doesn't quite know how to handle his sudden attraction to Kate or his fear that she will be exactly like his ex and not understand or be able to live a slower paced life with him. He understandably is also reeling from his baby sister's murder and the secrets it uncovers. He's brooding... Alpha.... protective.... annoyingly stubborn... and oh so sexy when he makes up his mind to act on this chemistry with Kate. He pushes her past her insecurities and what they end up with is a wonderful thing to see. I really hope we get to see them in the future and they truly remain blissfully happy.
The suspense and mystery of who killed his sister and who the rapist is were wonderfully done with a slight twist of who the mystery assailant was playing nicely in understanding the main pair and a really great insight in to how they can/will make their relationship work in the future. After all everything between them is about trust and they realize that they can truly trust each other which is wonderful to see.
Special thanks to Harlequin Intrigue and NetGalley.com for the chance to read this in exchange for my honest review.

Hmmm... Well now. I don't know about most people but when I think of a police psychologist, I tend to think of Riggs' nemesis in the Lethal Weapon series. Yeah. The H - a cop - is informed that his sister was the latest victim of a serial rapist, and she was killed.
So our H seems to have this...difficulty... I guess... in recognizing that he's well, pushing his luck. The poor h is tired and he wants to ask her more questions, pick her brain, etc. I dunno. I have a family and am surrounded. I still need my time alone. He seemed to have difficulty grasping that concept. Yep; this guy and me would get along so splendidly. "Leave me the hell alone before I rip off your head and spit down your neck!!"
You know, many authors of late want to do this story arc over a series of books. I can see why as things are rarely wrapped up in a day or three. On the other hand, after a long running series has had several back to back issues... Yeah; it gets kinda old. And in this series' case, they finally solved the issue with the serial killer only to have a serial rapist show up. ==muses thoughtfully. It's nice when a story is completely self-contained - no on-going issues carried over from previous books.
Second novel in the Task Force subseries of the Precinct about Kansas City Police Department. Sheriff Boone Harrison has traveled from Grangeport into Kansas City to meet with (confront) the police and detectives who have been assigned the case of his sister, who has been raped and murdered by the Red Rose rapist. He meets the team, who are not happy about his investigating the case independently. He can't just stand by since he feels that he has failed his sister.
Dr. Kate Kilpatrick, Task Force Public Affairs Liaison and Psychologist, is assigned to herd Boone away from the press and keep him away from investigating on his own. They find some common ground and begin to both alllow their armor to be pierced.
There are more than a few twists here, and a good continuation of the rapist story. Look out for Miller's references to Kate's clothing, as she makes the point that modern-day clothing can be as much emotional protection as armor was in the middle ages.
This was a good read, and I was surprised by the ending. I definitely want to read the next book in this series to see who the real serial killer is.
Both Kate and Boone are good lead characters, both have a past with partners that were not completely honest and faithful to them. So while their romance is blossoming this does cause both of them to be careful. Which in life is a good thing anyway. Its nice to see that they think about the feuture and how to make it work for them together.
The mystery of who actually killed Boones sister Janie and the Red Rose Rapist keeps you on your toes. Nothing is as straight forward as it seems.
This is a fairly quick read, with a great mystery story and romance.

This is the first book I have read of Julie Miller's The Precent Task Force series. I will admit that the reason I picke it up is because I relate with KC as I am a Chief's fan and live in Ks. When small town Sheriff Boone Harrison find out his only sister had been raped and murdered in KC,Mo he had to go find out for himself what happened. The scenes that are depicted of the Sheriff coming to grips with his sister's death and being frustrated because he can't be part of the investigation, are tear jerkers and heart wrenching for sure. He develops a relationship with the task force pschologist and when Kate is put in harms way he jumps to her defense and finds more than he was looking for. There is a lot of soul searching and evidence that makes you think first one person is guilty and then another might be. The end is a shocker for me but would love to know who the real rapist is.
OK, typically I enjoy Julie Miller's Harlequin suspense books. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 in the task force series, "The Marine Next Door" but I have to say this one just didn't do it for me. It really was way too cliched and predicable even for a Harlequin. Add in I was just a little bit... I don't know...disgusted...outraged with Boone that he could show up to his "beloved" little sister's murder investiagtion and almost immediately start hitting on Kate. I know people under stress react differently but really? How about a bit more of a delay or struggle with your feelings?I'm going to continue reading just because I want to know about the Red Rose Killer...and I'm also hoping to see Spencer Montgomery hook up with victim from the first book...you just know he is.
Let me start by saying I'm loving this series so much, it's captivating and the mystery is so addicting, and don't get me started on the romance, it's so real and sweet and it does not have a frustrating heroine nor a stupid as f*ck hero, we get the attracting, the building romance then the love... It doesn't get more real than that....
What I loved about this book was without a doupt Boone, I got hoocked on him from the beginning, he was the perfect combination of sweet and badass.... he was just perfect... Kate.. not so much, I mean don't get me wrong I liked her and how she fit Boone but there were parts of the book where I just wanted to hit her or slap her... but I got over it by the end...
I can't wait for Annie and Nick's book, so off I go....
I love Julie Miller's books & was excited to read this one but was disappointed. This one had some rally jumpy writing. There were pages of dialogue where you weren't sure who was talking, where the characters just kept saying each others names & where it switched POV so much I almost felt my head spin. If I wanted a tennis match , I'd watch one.
