The story revolves around Charles Karino, a Levaamu Empire mercenary pilot who mans the twin seater reconnaissance seaplane Santa Cruz. One day, he receives a preposterous assignment: to fly solo over 12,000 kilometers of enemy waters to protect a girl named Fana del Moral. Fana happens to be the next in line to the empire's throne and a girl possessing beauty "equal to 5,000 beams of light."
An interesting narrative in a setting that seems to be made solely to frustrate the reader. "Remembrances for a Certain Pilot", or "The Princess And The Pilot" is a story about romance between members of different social classes and war. The depictions of aerial combat are exciting, but the plot itself is ultimately difficult to get through. The story makes a commentary about class and race throughout, using the protagonist's status as a mixed-race refugee to establish his background. The author attempts to make a point about both of the above themes, but instead creates an experience that is more maddening than insightful. There is no subtlety in how the author portrays those ideas, so it boils down to a simple "you should feel bad for the protagonist" type of story.
"Remembrances" is a story that has its merits. The characters are interesting, though one may want to avoid "shipping" them. Disappointment awaits should that be the case. The themes and setting are also done decently. The writing is, however, somewhat awkward at times. This last point improves throughout the novel for the most part.
It is worth noting that "Remembrances" has an animated film adaptation titled "The Princess And The Pilot". Other novel series set in the same universe include "Nocturne", "Love Song", and "Oath" of a Certain Pilot. None of these are translated, with the exception of "Love Song" receiving an animated adaptation.
I had originally intended on giving this novel a 3/5, but have settled on a 4/5. It is flawed, but so too is my taste. It is an enjoyable work that, while having many points to criticize, is a unique and fun journey.
Kenapa?
Hehe...
i saw the movie weeks ago and i loved it, the ending made me cry especially. so i immediately wanted to check out the manga and as i read it, i wondered if i'd cry by the time i'd finish the epilogue since the movie is based off this.
the answer is yes, yes i cried a lot. it's so bittersweet yet so poignant and satisfying. i love the princess and the pilot, both the movie and manga. so sublime and perfect.
A romantic story about a pilot and a princess, very entertainingly. The movie of the same name is also well worth watching. What a pity that - as far as I could ascertain - there is not yet a printed version in English.
