A Brother's Debt

Rate this book
A call for help brings Step Velkin to the frontier, where he discovers his estranged brother is dead.
As if that isn't bad enough, he learns his brother has left him with debts he can't afford to pay off. Debts which are owned by Ettore Carboni, one of the biggest and most powerful gangsters in that sector of space.
With no other choice open to him Step is forced to work for Carboni to pay off the debt. His first job, to smuggle a package; unfortunately, one of Carboni's rivals is after the package, and he doesn't care if he has to use bribery or force to get it.

The first adventure for Step as he adjusts to his new life, his new - barely space worthy - ship and the perils of the frontier sector.

I love the Sci-fi gangster aspect of this book, it was a good read and a breath of fresh air see a author mix up different genres. Any sibling could relate to the main character. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I'm officially a fan, it is a rarity to see an author try new things, It was a great introduction into the mind of Mr. Jones's world! I can't wait to digg into shattered next!

This sci-fi gangster novella veers away considerably from the usual hard hitting material a la 'Shattered the Donna Harp Series' Karl Jones tends to produce.
Although the concept is interesting it fails to deliver and meanders into mediocrity. The authors seem unable to decide whether they are presenting a Boardwalk Empire meets space colony or a Hans Solo with sidekicks story. As it is both subplots meld into one with neither winning the trophy.
Clearly the creativity and capacity to create is there, however sustaining an attention capturing dialogue is quite another in this example.
I received a free copy of this book for my review.

I really want to know what happened to this series. The first book was really good and was disappointed to learn that there are no more and I can't even find copies of this on Amazon to recommend to people. Very good jump into a world that very much reminded me of Firefly. Would really love to see more in this series.
