From Charlotte Stein, author of the bestselling Mischief titles ‘Power Play’ and ‘Deep Desires’, ‘Make Me’ is a kinky, passionate romance perfect for anyone lusting after more than ‘50 Shades’.
An intense ménage 10 years ago leaves their friendship in tatters, but seeing Brandon and Tyler again reawakens Maisie’s desires. Maisie believes her former lovers will want the past to remain buried.
However, when Brandon confesses that Tyler is open to kinky encounters, Maisie realises her opportunity. She wants them both, and she’s no longer afraid to admit it.

I need a shower. Not a cold one, though. I just felt dirty. This story is filthy. I write pretty filthy stuff and this shit was just filthy. And hot. It took a bit to get used to the POV. It's so deep, but also limited that you're really left wondering what the hell is going on with the other two dudes. It's all so deep and limiting that I kept forgetting the heroine's name because of course, she's not thinking of her own name all the time.
This POV also had me feeling pretty skeeved out but Tyler and in fear for Brandon's mental health. The complexity of their relationship is sorted out eventually, but I don't know, maybe I'm thick. As I was reading I really couldn't get a sense if whether Tyler was just a Dom who was excellent at mind games or an actual jerk. Also Maisie, that's the heroine, is so unreliable, that you don't really get a sense of what the fuck is going on until chapter 3 or 4.
The times when they aren't having sex or about to have sex are summarized in Maisie's head so you also miss out on moments of levity between the three. Again this adds to the weird feeling about Tyler and had me wondering if Brandon was gonna flip the fuck out at any given moment. You never hear anything that isn't foreplay from Tyler until the very end and Brandon always seems to be apologizing or begging or on the verge of crying and running away.
Now I'm just rambling. This novella is good and very hot, but this is another that left me wondering if I was actually supposed to like the characters.
3 1/2 stars. I usually prefer erotica with a more romantic framing than this has but I have to say, it's just gloriously filthy. I'm rating it down some because the plot is abrupt and confusing; it felt like important parts were left out. Reviewers often complain about Stein's stream of consciousness narrations, but this is the first time I've ever found one of her books hard to follow. Everything's that left is smokin' hot, though.
This is just straight up porn. But really, really well written porn! And a nice little story thrown in between the porn. A good, quick read. That you should only pick up in a dark, quiet room. With a door that locks.
I only recently discovered Charlotte Stein when someone recommended I read Sheltered, which I really enjoyed. When I started to look at her backlist, I realized most of what she has published is erotic, and I’ve found a few that I really liked (Control, for example.) I’m determined to keep current with her new releases because I think she has a great voice. Make Me didn’t quite do it for me as a few of her others have though.
Maisie has two best friends, Brandon and Tyler and one night, impulsively they all have amazing sex together. But Maisie can’t handle it and disappears for five years. But now that some time has passed, she decides to pay her friends a visit, thinking all will be back to normal. But once she meets up with them, the sexual tension in the room spikes, and she knows there is no going back to ‘normal.’
Maisie is a very sexual person, and she wants both Brandon and Tyler but she also feels a little ashamed of her extreme sexual desires. The author pairs her with one very dominant man, Tyler and Brandon who is very similar to Maisie. He wants dirty things, but likes to be told to do them. He gets turned on by being on the submissive side. Tyler runs the show for awhile, but Maisie does come in at the end to turn the tables on him. She also must come to terms with the relationship Brandon and Tyler have together as she slowly realizes they play together when she isn’t around.
This one just didn’t grab me like some of her other works. Her heroines usually make me laugh as they find their way through these charged up sexual situations. Maisie fell a bit flat for me. And Tyler came across too harsh and cold, rather than dominant and sexy. I also needed more back story for these characters. I needed to see them as best friends, rather than just new lovers. I love a friends to lovers theme, but in this one I feel as if we are only told they are best friends, not really shown it. This one does have very dirty sex in it. I’m talking, top of the list for some of the dirtiest things I have read. I also love that there is some m/m action within the menage. These characters just aren’t my favorite. But I am excited about this author’s voice and will continue to anticipate her new releases.
What I most enjoyed about Make Me is the explicit surfacing of a theme that crops up more subtly again and again in Stein’s work — the erotic power of shame. If you’ve read Stein’s Control, Doubled, or All Other Things (all of which I liked very much), you’ll recognize the basic set-up here: two men, one woman, and a narrator who’s overwhelmed by lust. She’s ashamed of all the kinky things she wants to do and have done to her, but not quite ashamed enough to stop doing them. Or, more precisely, she’s not ashamed enough to stop them being done to her. She takes refuge in her lack of initiative.
But in this book, heroine Maisie’s shame is turned up to eleven, and it’s further amplified by the obvious and extreme discomfort of Brandon, the sub male in this grouping. Brandon is so steeped in sexual shame, it’s coming out his pores — but it’s the shame that gets him off, and the third member of this triangle of friends, Tyler, is well aware of it.
Let it not be implied, however, that this book is first and foremost an exploration of crucial themes in sexuality. It is, as I told Charlotte on Twitter the other day, a filth cookie. Or possibly a filth pickle. So if you enjoy that sort of thing, have a bite. It’s tasty.
This (short) novel was a terrible piece of drivel. I really like menage/poly stories & had high hopes for Make Me. Sadly, i was very disappointed mostly bc i felt the writing was stunted, scenes were strung together awkwardly, and the characters had SO MUCH they could have said/explained but didn't. And, any erotica that uses the phrase "my smoothly waxed mons" is just...I don't even know.
I skimmed the last 1/4 and the only reason I did that is bc I'm on vacation & keep falling asleep at night or in the car on the long drive to our destination, otherwise I'd have flounced much much sooner & started something that takes actual brain power to read. I'm only reviewing bc I want my friends who are looking for WELL WRITTEN EROTICA to know that they needn't add this title to their TBR list.
No idea why this has taken me so long to review. This book is what it is: a short, somewhat PWP, story about a menage. It doesn't do anything too complex, or use dramatic language or beautiful allegories. It is just off the charts hot. But then, I think that about every Stein I read because she is, for me, a master (mistress?) at the sex stuff (and in her longer books, proves herself to be a master of character and first person writing and all the other stuff too). This isn't completely PWP, as I say, it does have three clearly defined characters though and a background to the relationship which sets a nice context for alllllll the sex. Amazing dirty talk too. In a marketplace full of masses of poor or average erotica, Stein is absolutely raising the bar sky high.
*fans self* Well good lord, that was simply...deliciously...naughty.
There's something so lovely about the way Charlotte writes her scenes - something that makes the words hot while not becoming campy or over-the-top. There's lots of lust, a hellofalotta sex, some strong emotions, and one leading lady finally coming out of her shell and accepting her not-so-innocent side.
Rating: 4.5 stars Ok, so I just finished my second read of this one. I couldn't remember enough specifics to write a review before, but I knew I really enjoyed the book. So here it is. Nothing like a Charlotte Stein book to get you out of a reading slump. I read the blurb for this book ages ago, and something about it vaguely turned me off. Looking at it now, I'm pretty sure it was the “for anyone lusting after more than '50 Shades'”.
So, let's put that one on the table first. This is not anything like 50 Shades. There's no bondage, no spanking, pretty much nothing on the B, S, or M spectrum. Notice I left out the D. Yes, there is some domination, but all in Charlotte Stein's trademarked consensual style. Anyone that says “no” is immediately outed as lying and they carry on with the durty enjoyment.
Tyler and Brandon haven't seen Maisie in years, ever since they had a threesome with her and she walked out the next morning without a word. One thing to remember with Charlotte Stein novels, the relationship is loads more important than anything else going on. Meaning, I'm not 100% sure why she came back, I think the men were opening their own bar or something. I'm not sure how she knew about it, where she lived, or what made her decide after so many years to see them. But the important part is, she did. She went and gets wrapped up in them again. They have a little bit of awkward time, but they jump back into sex really quickly. Not quite coercion, completely consensual, but pushed beyond a couple of their comfort zones.
This story also contains: male/male sexuality, male/male/female sexuality (in many different positions), a little bit of exhibitionism and voyeurism, lots of durty, sexy talk, and there are two guys and a girl, so be prepared that there are butt things involved. We can leave it at that, right? Lots of durty sex things and some vulnerable, passionate, emotional characters.
It's about opening up, freedom, taking life and love with both hands even when you're nervous, and the everlastingness of love. The whole book was perfect in my eyes and I could have read more of their sexual exploits for hours.
Tyler and Brandon and Maisie are a complete package. When Maisie runs out after a sexual encounter with them five years ago, their friendship fell apart. But she hopes that seeing them will prove that at least they haven't damaged their friendship too badly. It's far more complicated when they want to pick up where they left off. Maisie finds her own power, which I love. Tyler controls a lot of their interactions – I'd compare it a bit to Lust Dazed. Maisie and Brandon seem to need someone pulling their strings and Tyler is all too happy to do it. But the twists and turns by the end, oh my gosh, I loved this one.
I felt all kinds of good things while reading the story. It definitely goes on my re-read pile, even after reading it twice already. Will I re-read this one? Yes, definitely. Does it knock Restraint and Curve Ball off my best of Charlotte Stein category? Maybe not quite, but it's a very close hair behind.
*This review is archived on my blog: The Theory of Lieto Fine
If you're looking for a hot and steamy friends to lovers menage story, you've found the right book! From page 1 the sex is right there, and continues throughout. What makes this one different than others of the genre is Charlotte Stein's unique voice and ability to approach the situation in a sometimes comical, sometimes shocking and always entertaining light. The story starts with Maisie having a sudden quick and dirty encounter with her two best friends Brandon and Tyler, an event that results in Maisie abandoning their friendship for ten years from the shock of it all, but never being able to get them or what happened out of their mind. As young adults, she wasn't sure how they could ever recover their friendship, but now that they are older and hopefully wiser, she's willing to look into what could be something better than she ever imagined.
The interesting parts of this story were the dynamics of the three involved. They all take turns at being in charge and being submissive, though Brandon is the one who appears most submissive of the three, willing to take orders from Tyler or Maisie. He enjoys the cuckolding fetish and Maisie and Tyler are equally turned on by this. Lots of dirty sex is the trademark, but there are deeper emotions at play here as the three of them work towards recapturing their friendship and giving a committed threesome a real chance. Hot, steamy and fascinating. 4 stars.
Note: a copy of this story was provided by the author for review.
Almost gave up on this one. It’s just over 100 pages, though, so what the hell.
It reads awkwardly. As if the person telling the story - it’s first person, so that’d be the h Maisie - loves the sound of her own voice. And Maisie is also really really embarrassed that she wants her two best friends - albeit she hasn’t seen them in 5 or so years. But they opened a bar, which you only get to hear about in the opening scene and then never visit again until the end. So Maisie. She’s both repressed and self-important. Not an odd combination because neither is honest. But an off putting one.
The guys are the also very embarrassed. Brandon, who naturally turns to the dominant-but-reads-as-creepster Tyler to do him when he (Brandon) doesn’t have the balls to go after Maisie. Just admit you’re gay, dude.
The dialogue was lacking bc Maisie was too busy turning a phrase. And the author would introduce key statements or questions with an actual colon. Like this: Well, you can’t get neon lighting in text so maybe this was Stein’s workaround?
Really just skimmed the last 25% of the book because bad porn and read the last couple of pages. My reaction was “come ON!” with an eye roll. That’s when it went from two stars to one.
5 stars are for those - if I were rating on story I'd knock one off. Something about the dynamic between them made me uneasy right up until the end, when the author resolved it for me. Unfortunately, the book was so short that there was no time to develop the relationship between the three any further.
I'ma start a shelf called three-way just for this.
So normally menage is not my thing... at all. This read a bit more like a poly, which, I will admit, sometimes I don't mind.
Maisie, Tyler and Brandon are friends, but things go a little too far one night and everything changes. The next day she disappears without a word to either of them. 5 years later, their paths cross again and instead of running away, the three explore their intense feelings and desires.
^^^ that up there is the tame version of what this book is about LOL ^^^
So to be perfectly straight and up front, there is some m/m, m/f, and m/f/m in here, but it's all well written and HOT (holy crap is it hot)
I love how Charlotte Stein tells a story that's for sure. This is a short one, only 101 pages but we get just enough of each character to understand the motivation behind what's going on. We get everything from Maisie's POV which helps in learning about the boys. Brandon and Tyler... I don't even know what to say about these two... Brandon is the somewhat timid one and Tyler... Tyler is about as straightforward as they come.
(I won't lie, I would love a snippet of the two guys during the 5 years, or even back when the whole thing started for them.)
Do you like a dirty talker... because holy balls Tyler is your man. Good lord I wouldn't have been able to deny that man anything either.
"The years have only made him stronger, smoother, better. I bet he could talk Mother Teresa into a gangbang with very little effort at all."
I was looking for something a bit naughty last night and this completely worked! Definitely give it a read... you know if poly/menage don't squick you out! LOL
Make Me is a novella featuring Maisie and her two guy friends, Brandon & Tyler. Their friendship stems back since their college days, and the last time Maisie saw them she sneaked out after an amazing albeit awkward threesome. Ten years later she’s visiting them, and against her rational judgement she finds herself willing but conflicted in addressing what happened.
This is a naughty mcnaughty short by Charlotte Stein. Tyler and Brandon have an interesting bisexual relationship, and both of them are tied up with Maisie. Maisie, god love her, is completely confused and shocked to learn of this. She struggles to understand the relationship between her two best friends. Tyler dominates Brandon like a boss, and Maisie has a hard time understanding how on earth this works, and why Brandon tolerates it. When things begin to click for her, she finds herself slipping in with them.
Steamy and raunchy, yes ma’am. I wouldn’t say this is one to stick with me, something like the equivalent of a one night stand erotic read. I enjoyed it, but it left me a bit empty. I wasn’t too terribly attached to the characters, and there were times I wanted to shake Maisie. If you’re looking for something to light your fire give it a go, but don’t expect a lingering burn.
Holy Four Alarm Fire Batman! I think I just read the hottest thing to creep onto my Nook in a good while. And believe me, I've read some yummy little tales lately. Make Me absolutely knocked my socks off. *I could totally segue that last statement into a lewd comment but I'll keep my inner 16 year old at bay ;)*
Tyler's character is so delightfully filthy with his words. Mix that with Brandon's sweet disposition and it's just a firework ready to go off. Maisie is a lucky lady.
I, personally, would qualify this is erotic romance, because there is a relationship that reaches beyond sex. I know others might disagree and mark it as strictly erotica due to the sexual content (F/M,M/M, M/M/F) and frequency of such scenes. But whatever you want to classify Make Me under I don't care, because it was hot and made my day/night and probably tomorrow :)
Pessimo.
I say this often, but I seriously do not know where to begin on this review.
Make Me is the story of Maisie, Brandon, and Tyler. Best friends who go a little too far one night and change the entire dynamic of their friendship. Put 5 years in between said night and we are here.
Told in first, you get Maisie's thoughts and reasoning for her actions. Brandon is a sweetheart and Tyler is a dirty boy. The sex is naughty and who doesn't love to get a little naughty every now and then.
This biggest deal breaker for me was the language. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some filthy dirty talk, but sometimes less is so much more. It felt over the top and contrived and in turn, had an affect on the actual story itself. Tyler is the dirty talker, but it came across as shock factor of how he could shame Brandon and Maisie. It made his character come off as controlling and I just didn't care for him anymore. Even his grand gestures towards the end couldn't completely shake what was previously done.
All in all, a well written story by an exceptional author. Stein can definitely tell a story. It's just didn't jive well for me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it as I thought I would either.
Wow... I really, really like Charlotte Stein's writing, my fave of all time is her fem-dom masterpiece "Control", but this one is just a no-go for me.
I can't finish it, this is why:
It came off to me as creeeeepy and gross. I don't like the 2 friends (are they gay or not, and who cares?) I know it's a sexy, menage, erotica novel but there was something about the set -ups that just grossed me out. The Maisie character was just such a .... Ho..... ugh... and I did not understand the attraction(s) either way. I absolutely hated the Travis (was that his name? or was it Tyler?) character... he bosses around Brandon, who I WANTED to like, but he came off as such a whipping boy, no I just couldn't get into any of it.
It's one thing to be horny, quite another to be sadistic and perverted in a yukky way, and really, even though they didn't do anything I haven't read elsewhere, it just didn't click for me in this one.
Ok so I've written about this before, but I am confounded that it has happened again. I've read a few menage books. They've mostly been of the MFM category (Did you know that there is a difference between MFM and MMF? THIS BISH DIDN'T). I bought this book on the strength of the author's name alone. But see she makes me want to read more of the MMF genre like gah I need more. But will it be as good as hers? IDK! Guess I'll have to find out with lots and LOTS of research.
Soo I had just read one of her novellas in the Secret Library series and I wanted MOAR so I decided to pick this up. And it doesn't waste any time getting into the good stuff.
But I have to say besides the hotness I really like how the character of Tyler was done esp. near the end of the book. I thought that was the best. Ms. Stein is really good at writing layered characters. (And really hot porn, but you knew that right?)
Read on Oyster. 2.5 stars. Stein always seems to write funny, awkward characters that I enjoy getting to know. This book didn't really accomplish that. I didn't like Brandon or Tyler. I worried about Brandon's emotional and mental well being for the entire book and I thought Tyler was less dominate more a sociopath. I didn't want these three to get together and didn't buy the romance. The sex is filthy though so there is that.
