This set comes with all three books in the action-packed Dragon Slippers series, written by the New York Times Bestselling author Jessica Day George. Includes the following Dragon Slippers, Dragon Flight, and Dragon Spear.
Jessica Day George likes chocolate, knitting, books, travel, movies, dragons, horses, dogs, and her family. These are all things to keep in mind if you ever meet her. For instance, you could bring her chocolate to make the meeting go more smoothly. You could also talk about how adorable her children are, even if you have never seen them. You could discuss dog breeds (she had a Maltese named Pippin, and grew up with a poodle mix and a Brittany Spaniel. Right now she has a Coton de Tulear named Sunny). You could talk about Norway, and how it's the Greatest Place On Earth, and Germany, The Second Greatest Place On Earth. You could ask her about yarn, and indicate a willingness to learn to knit your own socks, if you can't already do so.
And, well, you could talk about books. Jessica's books, other people's books. It's really all about the books. To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld: Friends, family, school, they were just obstacles in the way of getting more books.
She would like it if books came with chocolate to eat while reading them.
I really enjoyed this middle-grade series about a feisty commoner with uncommon sewing skills. Her family was very poor and "it was my aunt who decided to give me to the dragon," with the thought a "brave adventuring knight" would slay the dragon, marry Creel, and elevate her family. Instead Creel makes a bargain with the dragon Theodoratus (who hoards shoes rather than gold and jewels) that she'll get out of his cave and keep the swashbuckling rescuer from bothering him, if he'll let her have a pair of shoes rather than eat her. And so begins her adventure, trekking in her dragon shoes to the king's seat to try to apprentice as a dressmaker. Having discovered dragons really did exist, she has a connection most people don't and becomes somewhat notorious not only for her embroidery skill but her relationship with dragons. I was surprised these books were labeled middle grades, other than they were short and a quick read (a book a day for me). But there were elements that seemed more geared to the YA category--the main character was 16, she was independent of her family, it was a coming-of-age story to some degree, and she develops a love interest. But then, these books didn't explore a complex theme or boast a complex writing style. Thematically the stories all involve the social status of dragons and humans--there were Dragon Wars in each novel--exploring the inability of differing races to coexist when fear and arrogance fuel bad feelings. Well, whatever the category, I really enjoyed the story, the world, the new and interesting conflicts in each book. I'm just glad that somehow I found them to read, since I rarely frequent the middle-grade bookshelves!
This review is also available on my blog, Read Till Dawn.
This is my third time attempting to review this book. I've been coming back to it periodically for almost a year now, never able to get my feelings about it down on paper. The first time I wound up just summarizing the entire story (pretty poorly, at that). The second time I got started talking about how much I love it and describing Creel, the main character. Somehow I lost my oomph halfway through my seventh line, and never really got it back. But now I'm trying one more time. Three's a lucky number, right?
Okay, I think I'll start with the characters. Creel first, because she's the main character and because, well, she's awesome. Creel is a fun character for many reasons, from her love for sewing (the clothes descriptions in this book are fantastic!) to her love for - well, someone. Of course, in this book the romance doesn't dominate the scene. No, it's just added to the story. What I love about Creel and the prince's relationship, is that it starts out as a comfortable friendship. It takes the whole first book to become anything more than that, which is really refreshing in today's fantasy novels. But anyway, Creel is fun. She's stubborn and single-minded and - well, and funny. Really funny!
Next, the girls who work at the shop. Not much to say about them without spoilers, but I love how Creel made her opinions about the other shopgirls the first time she met them, but then it turned out her first impressions were completely wrong.
Luka. He's sweet. He's funny. He's not a hunk of meat in shoes. He's an actual person, with an actual life, who becomes friends with Creel. They have things in common, they share a sense of humor, and they like each other as friends before any idea of romance ever comes into either one's head (okay, that might be an overstatement - but still!). I love him as a character, and my love for him has nothing to do with his physical description. He's just a nice person.
As for the dragons, the characterization here is really good. Each dragon has a unique personality without being a caricature, and the idea that every dragon hordes a different good is really cool. The first dragon Creel meets hordes shoes, another words stained-glass windows, and another collects dogs. The type of objects that the dragons collect provide a great reflection of their individual personalities.
The storyline is tight, compelling, and flawlessly executed. I honestly have nothing to critique about this book: I all-around love it. I cherish my signed/personalized copy like the treasure it is, and reread it every nine months to a year. I love the characters, the settings, and the plot. And this is why I've had such a hard time reviewing it: I have to fight to come up with anything besides "I LOVE THIS BOOK! GO READ IT RIGHT NOW! AND THEN READ THE SEQUELS!" Becase really, that's all I have to say about this book at the end of the day. So go. Read the book. Please.
The first book is phenomenal. The series is phenomenal. Even today ten years after first reading these books as an ADULT I am in LOVE with these books. I haven't read these books in ages, but I decided it'd be nice to come back and leave it a review. How can I leave a review for something I read almost a decade ago? Because it was so good, I still vividly remember most of it. It's such a memorable series. I fell in love with it years ago, and I'm still in love with it today, and you better believe I'm re-reading this gem among plebeians.
The plot is so unique. This book is what got me started on my now forever obsession with dragons. Shardas was my imaginary friend as a 9 or 10 year old. This book was such a pivotal part of my childhood, such a key part in the love for books that I have now, and for a while I forgot that. But I never forgot the name. And, almost ten years later, I never forgot the story.
The story takes you through the riviting tale of Creel, a simple girl who gets thrown into a wack world because of a wack aunt. The beginning of the story, granted, feels a little rocky and weak: her aunt decides to give her to a dragon so a knight can save her (it's very fanfiction feeling, reminds me of the "my -enter relative here- sold me to -enter gang person/bad boy/etc-"), but through a first person point of view, I think the author handles it rather well, and so does Creel.
And then, she meets the dragon.
And I was hooked.
If you're considering getting your children this series, yes. Please do. It's wholesome and engaging, and it has spellbinding storytelling.
If you're just looking for a casual read as a teen, and wondering 'oh hey, what's this? should I get it?' Yes. It'll keep you on your toes, and you'll fall in love with the characters. ...Or learn to hate some of them, I'm now having a vivid memory of a character I forgot existed who I still feel seething anger towards, and I can't even remember her name. I'm sure you'll know who I'm talking about soon enough. She sucks.
If you're an adult and thinking "what's this?" Yes. What's this is the question you should ask, which will lead you to the reviews, which might lead you to this one, which will encourage you to read the series. "But I'm... I'm 23. Isn't this series for middle schoolers?" Yes. The writing is geared towards a younger audience. But you know what: it really doesn't matter. Because this book is still amazing, and it'll still engage a casual read from an adult audience. If you're in the mood for some fantasy and classic dragons with a twist, please I beg of you, read this series.
Main character Creole is left at a cave where they hope that the dragon will scoop her up and bring her inside so that the prince will have to come there to save her. next exchange for leaving and sending the prince away the dragon gives her blue satin slip first. Now these slippers aren't normal and she can sense it.
*Spoilers* the blue slippers that Creole has turned out to be able to control the dragons. a greedy princess uses them from her and uses them to make the dragons attack everyone so she can rule the Kingdom. shortest the dragon who Creole befriended and his mate dive into the boiling sea to destroy the slippers and almost destroying themselfes.
I liked the focus on art and gowns and embroidery. All Creel wants to do is turn her obvious calling into a livelihood but as a poor small town peasant she faces numerous challenges. After she runs into the underground dragon society and becomes their friend and advocate she moves further and further away from the human world of prejudice and injustice. But somehow she manages to balance the two worlds and that's the most fantastical thing about this series.
This was an amazing book, as a girl who is obsessed with anything involving dragons, I love the creativity and originality that went into this. The idea of dragons hoarding different objects honestly made my day 😂 I loved the rest of this series and highly recommend it to any fantasy lover of romantic non-smut books 😁
I thought that this book was amazing! In this book a country girl named creel who is sort of poor goes into a dragons cave that could be abbandoned so a prince would save and mary her, her aunt made her do it. Her brothers throw rocks in the cave then leave she goes in finding that it is not abbandoned. A dragon named theodoros lives in it and she finds out about magical pools that you can talk to other dragons through or see whats happening. The aunt has just sent a knight to go and rescue her so she the dragon sarts to get frustaated so the make a deal that she would leave with something in return. So they go into a room and she finds out he collects shoes she goes through them and then picks a pair of blue slippers. The dragon and the other that is shown in a pool are both very suprised but theodorous keeps his word and lets her go. She turns around the knight and sends a message through him to her family that she is going to find work at the kings seat. On her way she bumps into finding other dragons. She finnaly gets somewhere to ask where it is she trips on pippin a dog and finds out it is the to be princess amali's dog she gets so mad but creel slips away and then bumps into a prince who helps her find work. After a lot more happening in the book creel finds out that the slippers control all the dragons and princess amali has stolen them. The dragon war begins. Creel is nice and cares about dragons a lot when she finds out the dragon shardas had a freind alcamist she also becomes friends with him he lets her stay with him in his cave when she is embodering to get work and show her talent. Creel also really wants her own shop but knows that first she has to make money working for someone else before she even has a chance. She gets work at derdas with prince lukas help and a dukes wife sees her work because when she came to derdas she had embrodered her own dress. The dukes wife is impressed and wants her embroiderey done for her dress which makes derda very mad because she wanted the credit for creels work. When creel hears about the merchants ball where people go to try to get a work place of there own by getting someone who is rich attention then she is interested and starts embrodering her dress with the help if her friend marta who wants to work at creels shop and curently also works at derdas belives in her. Creel is also very brave while the dragon war is happening she is strong through it and helps everyone the best she can. I loved this book because it is full of adventure and bravery. I also loved this book because of the dragons who made it great and if you dedcide to read this book you will find a suprise in it at the end. I gsve this book 5 stars because I can not think of anything I did not like about this book. I Also think that even though princess amali is so rude and spoiled it makes he book more interesting. I prefer this book 100 percent.
I thought Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George was a fun read. This book is cute and creative with a happy tale that also has fun adventures and crazy encounters. I also enjoyed having a little bit of a love interest with Luka; it made the book fun and enjoyable to read. With Luka and Creel coming from totally different worlds, I thought it was interesting to see the to of them become friends and soon fall in love. Luka is a prince and Creel a poor farm girl who has come to the big city to start a new life. Creel has an interesting start to her adventure of finding a new life. With her parents both dead she has to leave her aunts house because they do not have enough money to feed her. So she is forced to leave. Then Creels adventure for a better life starts it involves two dragon encounters. One of which she is given a pair of shoes and the other she becomes close friends with a terrifying beast. Creel learns a lot about life outside her small town and about how there are many secrets she will soon discover. I would recommend this book to readers who want an easy read and a fun plot.
I did not get the boxed set but bought the books individually. I enjoyed the interaction between the dragons and Creel. It felt real. I also loved the way the dragons kept collecting things despite the problems they had getting their desired objects. Most of all, I loved the way the bad guys were not just bad per definition, they had reasons for the way they acted, and the reasons made sense. The same was true for the heroine. Creel was not simply "the girl who saved the day", she was a real person with good and bad in a very well balanced mix. I was really happy that she was a strong heroine. She's a good role model for girls.
Not surprisingly, I found the romance between the dragons more entertaining than the blossoming romance between Creel and Luka. Keeping in mind that this is a book for children, that's probably intentional (I've got two girls in the target group, so for them, the romance angle is just right).
All in all, the three books are a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I hope the author will write more books in this serries.
I think this is a great book for everyone to read! It has twists and turns and also if your a dragon lover they are also in this book and play a big part of the books. It's about this girl who goes on an adventure and learns new things and meets strange people and of coarse dragons. There are also two more books in this set Dragon Fire and Dragon Spear those are just as good and exciting as this one. This is kid friendly but is also great for adults as well. It gets you hooked because of the cliffhangers and you just have to keep reading to find out this book. I could not put this book down and when I finished I had to read the other two they are so good and the books have everything you could want in a book and more! I love that the dragons have a way to communicate to each other and that they can talk and express their feelings so you know what they are like and you get to know the characters more. I loved this book and you should read it to! (Because it is really good!)
I read the first book when I was 10 and I thought it was the best book ever. I read the second book when I was 11 and it was one of the worst books I had ever read. I wasn't going to do the third book cuse the second was so bad, but I figured it couldn't be much worse than the second. It was. I pitty anyone who reads the third book. when I was 12 I decided to try reading the first book again. I think the other books in the series kind of ruined it for me or maybe it was just cause I was older, but the first book wasn't as good as when I'd read it at age 10. Now don't get me wrong, I still love the book and would recomend it to anyone, but I think you will enjoy it more at a younger age and if you don't read 2 and 3. (:
This is the awesomest book EVER! Even thought the part before creel got to know Theoradus is kinda boring, but the rest of the book is just amazing! You just can't stop reading it, you just kept on flipping pages! And once you finish the book you'll regret that you've finished it! This is not a spoiler because I didn't tell you what the story is about. Creel is the main character so it's not spoiler alert, ok? Hope you'll read it! <3, 〜•StarryDreams•〜
I don't know what it is about this book, but the details were so vivid I felt like I was watching a movie, barely seeing the words. I don't have to wish I am there, I am there. It's great, and Jessica Day George does such an amazing job describing it, I don't even have to try to imagine, it just happens. When Creel's family needs money, they send her as a "princess" to a dragon, to get money as she marries the prince who saves her. This, of course doesn't work, and Creel's adventure has only just begun.
I LOVED this book so much! Out of all the books I have read this one is my favorite. I felt as if I was in a movie. I also thought it was creative that all the dragons each have something that they collect. I can really relate to this book because my grandfather used to tell me bedtime stories about me riding a golden dragon. But i think it's hilarious how I look exactly like Creel and she rides a golden dragon. Of course my dragon was called something else but I loved it because it reminded me of when I was little.
O MY GOODNESS this book is sooo good that I bought it on my Kindle Fire! I love this book. Its about this 15-year-old who ,after bartering her freedom for a pair of strange blue slippers, tries to make her way through life while being one of the top seamstress in the kings seat. But an evil force has practicly frozen the kingdom and Creels slippers may have something to do w/ it... Along the way she meets dragons, cripples, and even the royal family! READ THIS BOOK.:) -@
I think this was a very good book and I recommend people to read it because it was really good. its about this 15 year old who after bartering her freedom for a pair of strange blue slippers, tries to make her way through life while being one of the top seamstress in the kings seat. but an evil force has practically frozen the kingdom and creels slippers may have something to do with it. along the way she meets dragons cripples and even the royal family.
I had been discouraged by the lack of good reading material for my 10-year old and this series was so perfect for her. The writing was good, the content and plot were good. It was not entirely predictable, there was foreshadowing, emotions, adventure, loyalty, romance, courage all at just the right level for her. I really enjoyed the set and so did my 10-year old.
Very well written, very exciting, and very clean. I wish they would change the cover to look more like an adult book, this appears to be for kids, but really is very good. The tale of a girl and her love and bond with dragons.
I couldn't put these books down. I read the first one, and it was so enthralling that I couldn't resist buying the second and third in quick succession, even though I had certainly not budgeted that much for buying ebooks. Actually, I think it's time to read them again.
