Kankuro, Temari and Gaara unexpectedly aid Konohagakure against the Sound Ninja. Could they have another purpose besides rekindling the old alliance between Leaf and Sand?
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Gaara comes back in this chapter, and you almost ruined everything. Really? Lee is a natural master of the "Potion Punch"? There is a character in this book that rips out his own spine and uses it as a sword before dying brutally, and you're afraid to call a style "Drunken Master"? I expect better.
Okay, okay, we're progressing slowly toward something more interesting. Gaara is always an intriguing character, and while the other Sand ninjas serve as a background for him, Kishimoto dedicates a lot of pages and a lot of effort to establish them as individuals. Not bad, though the enthusiasm for power levels and weird jutsus never seems to go away. Orochimaru... I can't make my mind about him. Too on the nose for a serious villain, and his powers are certainly "over 9000!!!" which doesn't make for a good story. We'll see, though. Maybe still something decent can be cooked from that snake.
Any volume that features Rock Lee is awesome in my book. His attitude is contagious! The tensions from the fights in the previous volume are all culminating into this one, which is so insanely awesome! Quite a treat for the fans. I enjoyed that the politics were highlighted a bit more in the manga than they were in the anime.
Things are looking bleak. What we really need, here, are reinforcements.
Seriously. Where are the reinforcements!
Oh, right, here they are!
Overpowered, much? It just goes to show that no matter how good you are, there's always someone out there who has you beat.
The ending of this volume made me shiver, though. The sight of the statues at the border of the land of fire fills me with dread. The next volume is one of my absolute favorites of the series.
I am disgusted with how fast I read this series but it has been nothing short of healing and amazing (and it’s my second time reading it😭) also Kimimaro vs Gaara is insane
I honestly feel Kimimaro Kaguya is among the best characters of all time who happen to have the least amount of time in their respective series.
I'm serious. I don't mean he is the best character period, but when weighing the small time he has to shine, I can think of no other character in any other work of fiction that leaves an impression like Kimimaro does in the same 'screen time' that he is allowed.
His design is amazing, too. And his theme in the anime is perfection. Such a great character.
I loved the conclusion to each of the battles. The plot twist that changes the whole game for each of them was epic and is a huge step in Konoha politics. It sort of does have a deus ex machina vibe to them, but at least it was fun!
The battle with Kimimaro and the whole theme about loyalty and devotion was touching and unexpected.
The best part about this volume is the final panels. My excitement level was cranked up the instant we saw those statues. One of the greatest battles of all time is just around the corner!
Rock Lee finally comes back, but even better is the three sand ninja make their return to help the Leaf ninja. As great as the fight between Gaara and Kimimaro is (easily the best fight in the series period), I'm always a bigger fan of Temari and Kankuro. Those swiss-army puppets would be my ninja weapon of choice. Temari's weasel summon is now also my new favorite summon ever. I want a wind weasel. Who doesn't want a wind weasel?
This series thus far, is either good, to pretty good and then its volumes like this, that have its awesome moments. I'm really liking the teamwork of these characters and appreciate that it doesn't focus on Naruto all the time. And I'm okay with that. Even if the title says otherwise. Anyway, wow was this tense. And it made the volume a fun read.
Grandes combates llenos de acción y alguna que otra escena graciosa. Kimimaro has sido un gran rival que lucho hasta el final por lo que creía.
He amado mucho a los hermanos Sabaku: Gaara, Temari y Kankuro.
Gaara ayuda a Lee, Temari a Shikamaru y Kankuro a Kiba.
Being the user of potion punch, Lee reminded me of Jackie Chan's drunken martial arts. I must say that Kimimaru had a weird Kekkei Genkai, but equally effective. I was disppointed, because we never got to see his backstory, not even a sneak-peak. The Sand Ninjas have come to the rescue and are looking a great deal more mature than before. It was good seeing Kankuro in action without any interference for once. Now, i'm ready for Sasuke vs. Naruto!

Sasuga sand ninja, sasuga Gaara! Way 2 come in a pinch and look cool doing it. That Kimimaro no yatsu was cho- kimoi, and that battle was cho- abunai! I love when bad guys are likable, then become good guys. Best trope.
And now I get to ship Shika-mari THANK u, best cringy couple, can't wait. We all know the only reason Shikamaru complains about women so much is bc he's gonna be the first to fall in love, plz & thnk u. Temari is just the lady to show him what's what.
The fights between Sakon, Tayuya, and Kimimaro come to a close as the reinforcements finally arrive. Introduce the Sand Ninja, Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro to aide the Leaf Ninja. These volumes are wonderful, it really showcases the loyalty and friendship all these ninjas have for one another. You also for a brief second get to see the loyalty and honor Kimimaro holds for Orochimaru. The ending to this volume man, the sight of the Final Valley!!!
It was nice to see Lee and Gaara fighting together, same with Temari and Shikamaru but overall the past few volumes have been having the same problems a lot of shounen manga do, where there's very little emotional investment and even less emotional payoff in the fights because of how underdeveloped the competition is. That problem's only heightened in this volume where the characters are split up against different but equally unmemorable enemies.
I really liked this one. There was some fun payoff in seeing all of the sand siblings again, especially with them fighting on the right side of things. It was a treat to see Kankuro fight to his full abilities, and I do like the interactions between Gaara and Rock Lee.
