Quite enjoyable! This graphic novel does an excellent job of adapting the classic short story for an audience of children. The plot is clear, the dialogue is simplified without being overly so, and the characters are still distinctive and interesting. Baker's marital discord and Holmes' fake gambling are cut from this version. It moves quickly, so there isn't a whole lot of space for the characters to shine, but Goodwin manages to give them their moments. Mr. Baker is endearing, and Mrs. Oakshott's bewilderment at her brother's bizarre behavior is sweetly depicted. She was the perfect mix of patient and frustrated, and I think any child with siblings can relate. Best of all, Watson is smart and capable here, and Sherlock is brilliant as always. It's too bad it couldn't be about 10 pages longer, but it is still lovely all the same. Oddly enough, the thing that bugged me most was Holmes' hair; he's so fanatical about grooming in the stories, and here, his hair is sticking up at all angles. I thought it made him look like more of a teenager than a grownup, but I doubt a child reader would care. A charming take on the great detective.

This classic short story is well adapted in this graphic novel. Vincent Goodwin does a very good job of selecting the parts of the story that are suited to a young audience without losing the important aspects of the tale. The illustrations are well done, though Holmes and Watson do look rather young. It’s a good introduction to the Holmes genre, and one that will appeal to kids. There is even a short lesson on drawing Holmes a glossary of terms that may be unfamiliar to kids, and a website for more information, and a short biography on Doyle.

I love Sherlock and ACD. This was a short graphic novel but gave all of the Sherlock traits. A simple mystery but fun! And handy when you are trying to finish your reading challenge by the end of the year!

An ok adaptation of the classic Holmes short story. But, it did out one of my favorite Holmes lines. In the original Holmes says: "I am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies." I realize that cuts had to be made for the sake of brevity. But, I do miss that classic line.

This graphic novel re-tells Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tale of a stolen gem that ends up inside a goose. The page length and format are too short to really do justice to the complexities of Doyle's works. The reader does not pick up valuable information and clues to lead them to a viable hypothesis for solving the case before it is already wrapped up for them. Graphic novel/mystery fans may enjoy it regardless and it could be a goo dintroduction to his full textual works.

After watching the popular BBC Sherlock my daughter has officially dubbed herself a “Sherlockian” and wants to learn more about the premise of her favorite show. I saw The Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at the public library and thought this was a great introduction before attempting the more challenging short story collection. They are a fun quick read and even reluctant readers will enjoy looking for clues with Mr. Holmes.

Adequate art with not a lot of detail. Adequate adaptation for older children. Missing a lot of the original's mystery, but it's aimed at kids. It's not bad, but I can't imagine who I'd recommend it to. A kid who would like the subject matter would probably prefer the original...

Eh. The story was a little flat and boring, but I enjoyed Holmes’ declination to insist on turning in the culprit to the police at the end.
