Spirits? Madness? Which haunts Daniel? His teenage bride, Annamarie, must answer the question while she deals with her husband’s controlling behavior and abnormal fear of spirits he believes exist in the surrounding woods near their home. During an argument, her anger erupts and she yells a few odd words at her husband, Daniel, which she explains is her Gypsy curse. A bad day at work convinces him the curse is real, but after the brutal death of his best friend, his belief in the curse and his terror of the spirits escalates. Annamarie begins to have foreshadowing dreams of a young Gypsy girl who resembles her in every way. As the dreams become more vivid and frequent, Annamarie begins to fear her utterance of a Gypsy curse may have brought spirits into their lives. When they both have the same dream, she believes Daniel’s fears may be real. They feel they may be close to answers when a human killer enters their lives. With two battles to wage they must stand strong together. Frightening events spiral out of control and Annamarie must fight for her husband’s safety, his sanity and her own.
What is a teenage wife to do when her husband insists there are spirits chasing after him? When one of his friends is brutally murdered, he is convinced the spirits killed him, and that they are coming after him next. Gypsy Spirits by Marianne Spitzer is the story of this young husband and wife, and the mysterious events in their small town.
Daniel proposed to Annamarie in a moment of weakness when he thought he was going to lose her, but he didn’t really want to get married. His controlling nature causes them to fight a lot. In the heat of an argument, she rattles off a gypsy curse to him, but doesn't really believe it has any power.
Daniel is terrified of the curse and begs her to take it back. He doesn’t believe her when she says it wasn’t really a curse and that she just made it up. Things get worse when Daniel spends the night in the woods with his two friends, and one of them is brutally murdered. Daniel returns home covered in blood. That is never a good sign.
Soon after this, Annamarie dreams of a young Gypsy girl who resembles her so much that they could be mistaken for twins. She believes this is due to her imagination, but then she and Daniel have the exact same dream about this young Gypsy girl. And Annamarie seems to have a spirit watching over and protecting her.
Her in-laws aren't very nice, and she doesn't really get along with them, but Daniel’s grandfather is a different story. She love his grandpa. He tells Annamarie very emphatically that his house will be hers when he dies, even if she is no longer with Daniel.
Daniel’s mother, Maureen, is not a very nice woman and was a character I loved to hate. After her father’s death, she actually begins to be nice to Annamarie. This only lasts until she finds out what Grandpa Logan’s will says. I think when Annamarie finally stood up to her was one of my favorite parts of the book.
The story started off a bit slow for me, but the characters immediately grabbed my attention. People were dying and mysterious things were occurring. This kindled my curiosity. As I got deeper into the book, the plot became more and more twisted. Then the story wouldn’t let go of me. I’m normally pretty good at figuring out how stories are going to end, but this time I wasn’t. I congratulate the author for having me completely fooled as to how the book was going to end. Not many can do that, so I look forward to reading more from this author.
Gypsy Spirits was a wonderful surprise, the characters, story line and the specter of spirits lurking in the woods made for a very enjoyable read. Young newlyweds Annamarie and Daniel live in an idyllic small town but suddenly their peace and tranquility is shattered by the brutal murder of one of Daniel’s close friends. Worse yet, Daniel was there the night it happened. What I really liked about this story is it kept me guessing – were there spirits, or was Daniel suffering from a weird psychological disorder? Was he involved in the murder? Another strength of this novel is the author’s depiction of small town life and family relationships. Early on in the book a scene with Annamarie and Daniel’s grandfather was especially heartfelt. A terrific read you won’t want to put down!
My oldest son is one to complain about most stories being so predictable. Many stories tend to have two characters that endure some great conflict but endure through the tough times to achieve their happily ever after. If you’re looking for something different from the norm, then this is your book!! It was very original and very unpredictable. The ending will leave you reeling!!
Annamarie and Daniel just got married, and they are very young. Annamarie’s in love with Daniel, but he just married her because his parents pressured him into it. Why? Not for the traditional reason of her being pregnant. His parents are hoping that marriage will settle him down and help him forget all his nonsense about spirits. Their new marriage is extremely explosive to say the least, and not in a good way. Things quickly change, though, when Daniel’s friends start dying. Annamarie and Daniel grow closer through the trials they face, and Annamarie gains new hope in their relationship.
I was intrigued right from the start of this book. There were a few confusing areas in trying to understand the relationship between Annamarie and Daniel, but not enough to turn me off. I kept reading and slowly things started to make more sense. The dialogue seemed a little unnatural at times and didn’t seem to fit a couple teenagers. Then there were times that I really enjoyed the exchanges between the characters. I found a couple scenes hilarious. The plot was always intriguing enough to keep me reading through the rougher spots.
Annamarie’s character was well-developed, although she aggravated me in the beginning. It was her youth shining through. Her personality didn’t flip all over the place, but there were times when Daniel’s obsession made her snap. Daniel, on the other hand, seemed to change like day and night. You get the sense that his extreme paranoia contributed to this, so it didn’t seem too far-fetched. There were a couple scenes that didn’t seem necessary to the plot, and I didn’t understand the point of them, but they were short and not too distracting. As a warning, let me note here that the story contained some strong language, talk of rape, and one very bloody scene.
Overall, it was an easy read and it kept me to the point of wanting to know more. Although I felt there were some areas that could have been improved on, I still enjoyed it, and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel. I was left wanting to know what’s next for Annamarie. I rate it a solid 3 stars! *I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest reveiw.*
Gyspsy Spirit tells the story of Annamarie and Daniel, recently married. But although Annamarie is in love with Daniel, Daniel marries for various reasons, fear mainly… of not having her… and out of obligation to his parent’s requests. The two have a difficult go at the beginning, with various disagreements which during one, Annamarie speaks a Gypsy curse in the heat of anger. But after tempers cool down, it is dismissed mainly by Annamarie as just something she made up, not to be taken seriously. But events that happened afterwards convinces Daniel that this is far from the truth. When one of his friends die, Daniel (who is terrified and pre-occupied with spirits) begs his wife to remove the curse. Which she adamantly states was a joke and nothing top worry about. But events worsened, and more deaths occur. The couple begin to have the same dream of a young girl who looks exactly like Annamarie. Daniel becomes terrified and he, their marriage and their lives begin to spin out of control.
I was hooked by this story right from the start. The interaction between the two young people and Daniel’s obsession kept me fascinated. The book developed steadily, with the author taking the time to introduce the reader to Annamarie, and Daniel, their marriage and the things that drove them. The world that they inhabited was made clear to the reader, and had a way of drawing me in as a reader. Once the dark things began happening, I was fully engrossed and was taken for a ride through the twist and turns of the plot. Intriguing and in parts frightening, I really was delighted with this book. There were a few humorous parts that provided relief from the darker points. The ending surprised me, literally it was NOT what I expected!
But over all Gypsy Spirits was a very impressive debut novel and I look forward to the next in the series.
I full recommend to any that enjoy the paranormal genre, I would rate it PG13 due to ( Strong language, and violence)
Can a Gypsy curse bring spirits into one's life? Can it save a life? Can two people ward off the spirits and bring peace back into their short-time marriage? It's 1967 and Daniel Logan is a young, controlling husband, and when he's running around with his friends, Annamarie's temper raises to the boiling point. They love each other, but Daniel just won't stay home at night and he's drinking to excess with his buddies. She puts a make-believe curse on him since he believes the spirits of the nearby woods are coming for him. For Annamarie, the one thing she loved and had control over is her 1957 candy apple red Chevy Bel-Air. They have a small home in Timmus Woods given to them as a wedding gift by Daniel's parents. Annamarie has a special kinship with Daniel's grandfather who encourages her to call him Grandpa. She loves and respects the old three-story house Grandpa lives in. He is leaving the house to Daniel and her, even if Daniel believes it's haunted. This is an artfully written story with very well defined characters. The scenic surroundings are realistic. This is a mystery/thriller which will grip and captivate readers. I love the cover of this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel Book 2, "Annamarie and Magdalena." I also like the craftiness of the author's name Marianne, and the major character Annamarie. Highly recommend.
