In return for a business loan of 50 million yen, the prestigious Kamiya family gave their daughter Haine away to the Otomiya family. Haine, now an Otomiya, is appointed to the student council of the exclusive Imperial Academy, a private school for the aristocracy. Even though Haine is of proper lineage to be on the council, she finds herself struggling to find her place among the many secrets of its elite members, especially those of the president who holds her heart--Shizumasa Togu, aka "the Emperor."

Haine goes to the Togu mansion to talk to Shizumasa after their quarrel, but the guards won't even allow her inside the gates! Haine gets some help from Maora to sneak into the mansion grounds, but now she'll have to get past the family's final line of defense.

The story and characters finally seem like they're coming together, though with eight volumes left there is certainly plenty of opportunity for it to fall apart again. :D

Both Shizumasa (or more accurately ) and Kotoni have internal dialogue where they say they "hate" Haine, but the way that they interact with her doesn't seem to indicate this at all. They definitely have conflicting feelings about her. I can only assume that something has been lost in translation there.

I was debating whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. It's not as insane as the last volume, but it still had some crazy moments and was enjoyable overall. Nothing really sus happened this time around, so 4 stars. Excited for the next!

Students attending the Imperial Academy are placed in a hierarchical order based on their parents' income and social standing. Haine is in the bronze class and is not even allowed to interact with the highest gold class - yet the gold class is reserved for the head of the school council, also known as the Emperor, who happens to be the one Haine has set her heart on. When chance allows for her to join the school council, she finds that now that she can finally speak to the Emperor, he does not seem very willing to do so.

I wish I could cover The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross with praise - yet if I try to describe it in a few words I'd come up with chaotic, illogical and terrible humour. From the time of its release, it has been my least favourite series (one-shots not included) by Arina Tanemura and has yet held that position. It's a bit of a modern take on Cinderella with a school for a backdrop that could have taken many routes - but it seems to have gone all over the place.

Let's start with my biggest peeve - where does this all take place? Judging by the names and clothing, it can only be Japan - or a pseudo-Japan? Because although it reflects our contemporary time in many ways, many of the social norms make no sense. Haine is given up for adoption in exchange for 50 million yen, the school's hierarchy seems absolute - you can't talk with people in higher classes and you can rise up in class if your parents pay enough money. Teachers barely seem present, it's like the students run the school in which gang fights are a thing. There's a lot of family abuse going on and people can be proclaimed dead without any investigation, there are forced marriages and just so many extremes. If this were a fantasy setting I wouldn't have minded - fictional worlds can have any rules. But in the setting in which it's presented, it just caused too much disbelief in me.

With that off my chest, let's go back to the beginning. Although the school's concept could have proven an interesting story, it's barely relevant. The plot consists of the characters' dilemmas - and boy are there many. There is not a single character with a normal life that isn't frightfully melodramatic. Let's look at Haine; she's cute but also an ex-yankee/gangster who can easily beat someone silly (why are there knife and snake fights at school again?). She became a yankee because she wanted to prove that she's not worth anything - because, you know, her dad sold her and all. In her mind, her new adoptive family doesn't really want or need her, she's just a burden - so what better solution than to roam the streets at night looking for trouble.

Of course, her whole adoption thing proves to have much more to it, her father's just another tortured soul trying to do the right thing. Her mum goes half insane over it which, once again, didn't make any sense! She's had her teeth knocked out during her yankee-time and whenever her now fake-teeth come out, she goes all strangely berserk - hello humour, you almost made me smile.

Anyway, Haine goes into depression-phase multiple times throughout the story. There are many would-be-climaxes that are either resolved too fast or just interrupted so it could be resolved in a later volume. And because Haine's problems aren't enough, the author made sure that every.single.character. has at least as many to whine over.

If this story would have been much shorter, less wanna-be-depressing and either in a fictional setting or one that makes sense in our world, this could have been a decent story. The council was quite a nice set of characters. I like how they were all pretty different and became great friends.

Shizumasa, the Emperor, starts off as your standard stand-offish main guy but he turns out to be pretty interesting. I feel as though he actually had a legitimate reason to be a jerk to everyone and you know, he's the first to get over himself. His backstory is by far the most interesting and it led to interesting conflicts - it was pretty easy to root for him and hope for a happy ending.

So, while I could try to look past the many, many flaws and read on for the good aspects and hope for a happy end - I can say the ending was a happy one for the characters, if not for me. It was utterly unsatisfactory and pretty much cheats its way past the main obstacle that stands between Haine and Shizumasa. Why resolve the story's main conflict if you can simply ignore it and they all lived happily ever after!

Despite all, I still find myself reading this from time to time. Although most of it is spent shaking my head, there must be enough good in it to make me reread it.

Wow, toujours mieux.

I rate this 3.5 stars.

I rated this book less than 4 stars because I’m not a fan of Haine. Then again, I’m not really a fan of the typical pre2010 shojo female leads. There are a few exceptions, though.

Sto seriamente trovando difficoltà nel seguire la trama; al momento non trovò il motivo per il quale questo manga sia così amato, ma magari mi ricrederò andando avanti.

Things are getting interesting. Haine and Shizumasa have a sort of heart to heart. We meet more of Haine's family. Definitely better than Full Moon

It's a pretty cute volume. I had to skip number 2, so I was a little confused until the end of this one. It was interesting though. The art is beautiful.

Inhalt Booklet:

Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

This volume of The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross wasn't really on par with the rambunctious humor of the first, but since this is a shojo drama for the most part, it makes sense. I'm still not quite sure what Arina Tanemura wants to do with her characters besides have them bounce off each other in comedic conversations, but I did like how Shizumasa seemed much more stable and not nearly as hot and cold, most likely due to the development that he got .

I'm also concerned about how many tropes that Tanemura is planning on using. I know there's all the unrequited love triangles, but there's also Haine's biological sister who says she's engaged to Shizumasa . I also find some of the potential conflicts really exasperating. That said, Haine and Shizumasa are a really sweet couple, and I really hope they stay like this and he doesn't drive her away due to the complications of life. There's also an earnestness to the manga that I like. We'll see how I feel after volume 4, but I'm going to keep on reading this series until I hit a wall of okay volumes.

One more thing: I absolutely adore Maguri.

This is the one that knocks it out of the park. It reads very quickly, as compared to the other two volumes, but somehow it doesn't seem like its retreading the same tired cliches. Quite the contrary, Haine's relationship to a lot of the characters in the series changes over the course of the story and all for the better, but I am still a little torn as to who I want to see Haine be with in the end. You know, the doppelganger or the original Shizumasa.
The art is as always lovely, the panels easy to follow, and as always I am madly in love with Arina Tanemura's art, her ability to make all the boys in the story way too cute and the girl's lovely to boot. There are some amazing jaw dropping revelations like what Maora tells Shizusama's double. Seriously, wow. And my favorite scene which is the creation of The greatest tag team, which made me laugh and smile.
New characters are introduced, new problems come up, and they are solved, and as always my beloved Haine looks on things with an optimism that I can't help but equate to Finn of Adventure Time, somewhat naive but all around completely adorable and loveable. Heroes like them are easy to root for. So I'm still in Haine's camp, and the story is progressing in a lovely fashion. Completely original, and very different from any shojo we've seen or romance we've read. Seriously adorable still and so far this is the best volume of the lot.
Also, if you like Kusame, he makes a bigger appearance here than usual. So its all love and more cute boys. So yay. This one gets all the stars from me.

So far, my favorite volume of the series, even if it was slightly cheesy.

I know I shouldn't be saying this, what with my aversion to previously developed romance, but I do love the romance in this series. Between all the characters even! I'm even rooting for you little bro! Haine's background definitely helps that I think, and I really like how she's gotten Shizun to open up a little more and stand up for what he wants for once. Even if part of me is going that "moved a little too fast." (The other part is replying "it was an ACT duh Carissa" so it's all good)

This was definitely a Shizun and Haine volume, (NOT THAT I MINDED), and I liked how we got to see more of Haine's past and the ways in which she turned into the person she is currently. I like the little details about her life, her love of ballet, and her fear of failing are two things that really got to me. Her past is so painful to read sometimes, but it makes her character that much stronger.

Gush. I do love backstories don't I?

I'm so curious to where this series is going to go! Now I need to run out and buy like the rest :P 5/5

The story is getting better and better!!!

The characters are evolving and the story is getting more and more interesting. We get more back story for Haine and Shizumasa and it's complicated, Shizumasa's part at least. I WANT ANSWERS!!

We also get to see a much more human side to Shizumasu (which makes his secrets so much more interesting!) and meet more of Haine's family. Summer break's the best.

But I'm still asking for more Ushio and more Maguri. Ushio because she's a mystery and Maguri because he might be my favorite I haven't decided yet.

(The further you get in a manga series the harder is it to write reviews without spoiling stuff. Especially since this is the third volume I read this evening. But I'll leave you with this: READ THIS MANGA! The first volume wasn't the best but it grows. I promise.

At least admire the art. It's beautiful...

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

This volume helped me put my finger on what it is that I don't love about this series. It's too choppy! Things just don't get explained well enough to make sense. I can't quite figure out what the deal is with Shizumasa and his...shadow? Huh? I don't know if it's the writing or the translation that is poor, but it just doesn't flow well at ALL. I have the next volume and I'll go ahead and finish that, but I'm not sure that I'll continue with this series any further. For some reason the only character I am really interested in at all is Maguri, and that is mainly because he has intriguing hair. Meh.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any more confusing. Now we get to meet Haine's siblings, one whom apparently didn't even know about her or at least failed to make the family connection and the other who acts as if she hates her all in a vain effort to protect her. Rather twisted family dynamics if you ask me, not that it's saying much given the behind the scenes in the "emperor's" home. That's a whole other mess waiting to explode.... though it does seem that things at school and with the current pairing are getting better at least.

Not bad, and I love the art. Arina Tanemura is one of the greatest artist of mangas in my opinion. The story line still confuses me, but I'm starting to understand it and I love all the plot twists.
