Cinderella is one of my absolute most favorite fairy tales EVER. The library I work at has many different versions, going all the way from Egypt to China to the Philippines to North America, and not just the female versions but several "Cinderlad" tales as well. This volume stands out among the other story books by the sheer the depth and reach of just how many different versions there are within it! It was interesting to compare and contrast the traditional Cinderella versions with the less common "Princess In Disguise" versions like Donkey-Skin and Cap o' Rushes. The latter I think are definitely due for new interpretations in the twenty-first century with new storybooks and film versions.
Definitely a good read for anyone who loves the Cinderella tale no matter what their age, though I will admit younger children might be a bit bored by the lack of pictures within. The list of books and analysis of the tales at the end are just a nice bonus for older readers as well!
It is amazing to me how pervasive the Cinderella tale is and how it has made a home in so many different cultures. Not only does this book work as an excellent collection of the various Cinderella myths but also as a scholarly work that is filled with the research the author did about how these stories were spread and what actually makes a Cinderella tale.
This was a Christmas present to me as i loved this book as a child! It took a while to find a copy that wasn't ridiculously expensive
