Uma banda desenhada bem pequenina que promove a ajuda da Europa.
Achei os traços muito bonitos embora com alguns “cortes” nas cenas o q tornou os contos descontextualizados.

I believe that the form of comics, of using images in deliberate sequence, has a potential for being used in so many more ways than we do today. That the art of making comics is still in its infancy, and there are many, many areas of human communication where comics could be used, but are not. One of them is information comics, using the power of comics to communicate information on just about any subject matter. The only part of our world where this is done consistently is in airplane information folders, and they are usually really badly made, obviously by people who have no expertise in making comics, at all.

Anyway, the EU has a program for making comics, books that are free to order if you live within the EU, something that I, who since writing the book Comic Art Propaganda: A Graphic History has a great interest in all kinds of information/propaganda comics, just had to do. I wanted to see how an organisation such as the EU, which has within it's borders some really interesting comics cultures, handles the task of using comics as a communications tool.

This book was made available in all 23 official languages in the EU and published in over 100 000 copies, making it one of the bigger "hits" of the year 2010 when it was published. It is made up of four stories that are said to be based on real life stories of citizens of the EU who have had a second chance in life, with the help of the European Social Fund (ESF). The author and the four artists chosen to illustrate these stories are all experienced at making comics, as indicated by their biographies at the end, though they are not exactly A-list writers and artists. Considering that there are many countries in the EU where comics are being made, it is also interesting to note that they are all from either from France or Belgium, i.e. the French speaking part of the EU.

The stories are short and sadly try to much. They are forcibly cheerful and "surreptitiously" mentions the EU here and there, making them feel more propaganda and less information to me. The author Miel has also seen it as important to connect these most likely unconnected stories, by having the main characters make cameos in each others stories, even though they take place in different countries. An idea that surely sounded good at a meeting with EU representatives, but just adds the feeling that these "real stories" have been distorted far away from their original form in order to suit the people paying for this book.

The art is not bad, but when you consider the incredible amount of talent that is available in the EU, even simply within the French speaking comics culture, it's an embarrassment that this is what the EU would want to promote.

I can't help but compare to the recently published Swedish book, I hjärtat av malmö, which has a similar basis, i.e. that it contains comics based on real life stories. In this book, though, the stories do not feel as corrected and commodified, and the art shines with artistic integrity. And that's from choosing comics artist from just one of the many towns within the EU.

It wasn't till I finished reading that I realized that some of the stories had elements from the previous stories "hidden" in them. Pretty good to, too bad it wasn't longer... and strange, but the stories were true events taken from interviews from the European Commission, about the European Social Fund, a fund to help people start over. pretty cool.
