Normal life in Morganville. As far as normal ever was, Shane Collins thought; nobody was overtly rioting, getting arrested, or killing anyone. Not on the street, anyway.
Not on this street, anyway.
One of the hard-to-find exclusive stories written specifically for the UK editions (which at the time were being published a month or two after the US releases, meaning that die-hard fans rushed to buy internationally) … it was offered as an extra to help the UK publisher convince fans there to wait for the local edition, and it seems to have worked! I didn’t give Shane his own car early on in the series for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it was fun for him to have to ask nicely for rides. The fact that he couldn’t quite earn enough to buy his own said something about Shane’s job-related experiences, too. But finally, at this particular point (after Kiss of Death, before Bite Club) Shane is ready to make the commitment. I mostly love this story for the small-town details I got to put into it, and the introduction of Rad, the mechanic. Fun factoid: this story was inspired by me getting the rims on my car (a Smart car, which Shane would never drive, but Claire totally would) painted black. The shop salesperson said, ‘Oh, you mean you’re murdering it out.’ I’d never heard the term before, and loved it.
I love these little vignettes in between the books. They are at the end of some of my editions, but not all. This one was probably my favorite so far, mostly bc of Shane! Also, this car seems perfect for Shane! I am excited to see it in future books!
A Shane story and none too interesting. Granted, it would only be interesting to me if he died. The permanent kind of death. But really, folks... he buys a car. The end. Is it just me or was this story included in one of the books?
Anyway, as far as I can tell Shane's purpose is to: 1. cockblock Myrnin 2. play the damsel and tease me with the possibility of his demise 3. try (and fail) to play the tragic hero 4. get everyone in trouble with his rage issues 5. raise my ire
He's an ignorant, intolerant, chauvinist. He likes to think he protects Claire, but as a human in Morganville, he's not doing anything that she couldn't already do herself- better. Maybe when she gets over the whole "omg sex! *0*" phase, she can move on to someone who can actually have a conversation with her.
Murdered Out is short story 6.1 in The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine. This story is told from Shane's point of view and is my favorite POV as far as sorties go. In this tale, Shane and Claire are walking home from the movies when she sprains her ankle. She's fine, but this starts Shane thinking about buying a car. He finds a beauty of a car and the eldery lady sells it for $300. He had another $200 to spend and feels guilty for cheating her out of more money. He takes it to Rad who blacks out aka murdered out, the car. He returns to find more work was done by Rad, at the instruction of his vampire boss. The vamp wants the car. After fighting and getting no where, he agrees to a secret deal with Rad. Rad swaps out the car for a poorly running identical version of the car and he sells it to the vamps for $5,000. He gives Rad $1,000 for coming up with the plan and let's him keep the car, promising to lend it when he needs wheels. He gives another $1,000 to the elderly lady, because it fair. That leaves him with a profit of $2,600 after the price of the car and tinting. With money in his pocket, he borrows the car and takes Claire to the movies.

I’m really not sure what the point of this one is.
Shane buys a car, and that is about it. Oh, he haggles with a vampire somewhat but it is all over and done within a couple of pages. Moreover, it isn’t as though the car really comes into play in the series. It’s touched upon once (I believe it is only once anyway) as the rest of the time we deal with Eve’s vehicle.
While this story didn’t really have too much purpose, I still kinda enjoyed it. Shane is one of the characters that I have the most fun reading, and this novella was no different.
I love these little short stories. Especially, when it is from a different character's perspective. We don't often get to see much from Shane by himself so I'm happy this short story exists. He has truly grown and changed for the better so far in the series and it truly shows in this story.
A short story of Shane. If it wasn't because of Claire sprained her ankle, and they couldn't reach Eve for help, Shane wouldn't be thinking of getting a car urgently. However, I couldn't remember the scene where Shane drove this car in book 1 to 6; it's probably just an unrelated/additional story to the main books. But it's still sweet though ❤
One thing I really love about this short is that we get to read something from Shane's POV. But we also get to see how it's isn't only the vampires causing problems in Morganville. All the humans are blaming the vampires for the deaths throughout the town, but in this short we see that the humans are just as bad, if not worse than some of the vampires.
Another thing I love about this short is that we get to see Shane be who he really is. Shane loves to fight. He loves to fight people who deserve it and he has a huge protective streak which means that he will do anything to look after the people he loves, but also strangers.
I liked this one mostly because Shane showed who he really can be. A nice guy fighting the right battles and landing alive.
It was never so easy to buy a car, but I liked the fact it was a necessity for them because Claire would need the safety and he took the time to think of someone else safety.
This was an alright story but did not enjoy it as much as the other stories. This story was from Shane's viewpoint as he tries to get a car. With a vamp getting in the way but he does end up getting the car and takes Claire out. It was a nice story about them together but do not think this is needed with the rest of the series. x
"That was the thing about Morganville. Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live here."
hmmm...yeah, I'm with most of the other reviews. This one, unless it ties into the next book and I see the point in it...just seemed like run-of-the-mill kind of day to day stuff and was kind of boring...
Nothing especially interesting to read here, probably only recommendable to die hard fan. It's just a short story about Shane buying a car and as usual the inevitable problems that come with breathing in Morganville.
Another great scene from Shane's point of view. This one about a car. Interesting twist on the term "pimped out" and/or "tricked out." depending on which school of car jargon you ascribe. These extras give added depth to the characters we usually see only through Claire's eyes.
Well it wasn't as action packed as the rest of the series but the fact that in this short story unlike the ones before the gang was more together made me like it and, well, I kind of like Shane's POV.
I appreciated this little novella about Shane and his desire to get a car. I like that he doesn't take everything the vampires dish out and he's willing to stand up for what he believes in. As always with novellas, I wish there was more, but I liked what we got.
