Tomi Vuorela works security in a frozen off-world outpost. The terrain is unforgiving, especially when it comes to maintaining any semblance of a social life. Any guest is typically a welcome one, provided they're cleared for a refueling or part of IntelServ. Tomi knows his machinery, however, and when a suspicious landskimmer heads toward the his remote access node, Tomi must determine if the interloper is a harmless workman or a dangerous terrorist.
Andile Harper introduces himself as an engineer, but Tomi would rather play it safe than turn his back on a hacker in disguise. When Andile's story doesn't check with his own records, Andile's in for a world of trouble. Normally, keeping a man at gunpoint until backup arrives would be out of the question. But when Andile starts to play with fire, Tomi finds he's more than eager to hold a gun to the intruder's head and make his own personal set of demands.
(Originally published as part of the "Weight of a Gun" anthology.)
This little story was a real gem. Even though it is only 21 pages, I really enjoyed it and zipped through reading it faster than I normally would have.
The blurb does a very good job of explaining what the story is about. I’ve always been a fan of new and interesting worlds so the setting of this story was really something for me. An essentially frozen location with no one or anything for miles and miles around. The fact this story is scifi and deals with inter-galaxy intelligence agencies and all that had me glued to the screen.
The two characters – Tomi and Andile – where interesting even if they weren’t fleshed out like I would have preferred. Tomi is the one working security for a remote access node while Andile is the ‘engineer’ and suspected hacker trying to steal the node’s data. Tomi is by the book and handles Andile mostly as protocol states. The attraction between the two isn’t intense but it’s there and something you notice right away. When they act on that attraction, they realize they both have a certain gun kink that cranks their engines. It was hot but not as intense as it could have been and fit the story perfectly.
I really liked the way the author wrote these two. I liked how their sexual tastes matched up and the way it had a dubious consent feel to it. I also liked how there was an attempt for the characters to get to know each other as well as the little twist in the end. The only thing wrong with this story is the length and overall lack of details. I’d really love to read more about these boys especially with the way it ended. I’d love to see where they venture off too and what happens with them next.
Definitely recommended for those looking for a hot, quick read. I know I’ll be looking forward to more stories by Mr. Hansen and I’m hoping there will be a sequel soon :)
I've been having quite a good time reading these gun kink stories that came from the Weight of a Gun anthology. I've also been looking forward to reading more by this author ever since I read and reviewed First Watch last year. This story solidifies my opinion that his writing is strong, though this story is very different from that one.
Tomi is a man who speaks his mind and it usually doesn't do him any favors. He's been shunned to a frozen outpost on IntelServ. Technology has advanced into space colonization and off-world outposts are tuned into supercomputers, a part of which Tomi currently guards alone. His solitude is interrupted by an unknown visitor named Andile, who says he's an engineer who has come to fix some circuitry. Tomi isn't sure he believe him, though. It's very possible that he's a hacker trying to get into the system. When he scans Andile and finds that he isn't really supposed to be there, he has to hold him at gunpoint until backup arrives.
This is quite a short story and doesn't leave a lot of time for more than the initial scene between Tomi and Andile. Of course, anyone who might have difficulty with guns in a sexual situation might not find this scene as sexy as I did, but I enjoyed it. The tension created from being natural adversaries and cornered in a stalemate, while also having such a wicked attraction to one another fires up the heat. The use of the gun might make some uncomfortable in this story, since it is used quite lasciviously ;)
There's a nice little surprise in the end that brings the ending together nicely. A little possibility is left up in the air as well. I wouldn't call this a romance, more of a prelude to one. As kinky erotica it works nicely, but the story isn't overwhelmed with sex. Even with such a short length, the story took the majority without the sex, though the sexual tension is constantly prevalent. It's well written and as long as guns don't bother you as a reader, this is definitely a story I'd recommend. I'm looking forward to more by Peter Hansen.
Whew! I loved this short story! When I first read the blurb, I questioned whether I would enjoy a story with this premise, but once I started it, I was immediately swept up into the interesting storyline and very sexy and unique characters.
Since I think the blurb does an excellent job at describing the story, I won’t rehash it. Instead I thought I’d write the reasons why I enjoyed this story so much and why I hated to see it come to an end.
I liked the interesting world the author created. Through his descriptive storytelling ability, it was easy to envision the setting and the frozen outpost that one of the main characters, Tomi works and resides in. The author really paid attention to detail and it kept me enthralled with the story from start to finish. I too, wondered about Tomi’s unexpected visitor, Andile, and for what purpose, dangerous or not, of why he was really there. I thought the plot was an interesting one and found myself guessing and second-guessing myself at what was going to happen next.
I also thought the sexual chemistry between the two heroes were off the charts! Although Tomi is very leery of Andile, he can’t help but be fascinated and attracted to the charismatic man. I liked and appreciated the element of danger that seemed to flow between the two men as heavily as their attraction they have for one another does. I would like to point out that there is some gun play in this book, but it didn’t bother me, and it turned both characters on, so in some ways the dominance Tomi shows over Andile read very sexy without it being over the top.
I do wish this short story had been longer. I would have really loved to have had the opportunity of getting into the heart and soul of each hero. Both men were very interesting and still mysterious in many ways, it would have been great to read more about them and where this relationship is heading. I did enjoy the twist at the end and I hope that this means that Mr. Hansen is writing more about these uniquely, sexy characters in the future.
Interesting sci-fi short story about a guard at an outer security post and the man who tries to possibly trick him into breaching security. Or is he? I wish there was more to this story. I liked it, but I wanted to know more about Tomi. I spent a summer in Finland as an exchange student a long time ago and had a wonderful time and got to know a few Finns while I was there. I loved seeing that part of the story.
I'm not sure I fully understood or got the world here - more info needed. I did like the main MC, Tomi, a bit of a brat - a brash and horny guy on a lonely outpost. The twist at the end with Andile, the focus of his lust, is fun though I was left wanting more follow up about these two guys.
