A Question of Marriage

Rate this book
Beth was brokenhearted when Danny Harding let her down, and vowed that it would be a long time before she fell in love again.

But fall in love again she did -- with Danny's cousin Dean, a very different type of man indeed, and one who really loved her.

Or did he? Surely fate wouldn't be so cruel as to strike Beth again in the same way?

2 1/2 Stars ~ When Beth's parents died in an accident, she left England to live with her cousin in New York, and at a party she meet Danny. The Arizona rancher swept her off her feet and in record time, Beth was declaring her love for him. The night after Danny proposed he flew back to Arizona promising to send for her, only he never did. With a breaking heart, Beth decides to call the ranch and when the phone is answered by the man she thinks is Danny brother, she learns that Danny is engaged to someone else. Distraught Beth heads outside in a bitter cold storm and when she returns she frozen to her core, and ends up with pneumonia. Recovery is slow and the doctor recommends she winter in a warmer climate, so her cousin arranges for her to work as a receptionist at a dude ranch in Arizona. Beth knows before she takes the job that Danny's ranch is right next door, and so she goes in the hopes that maybe seeing him again she'll be able to get him out of her system. Only when she arrives, she learns that Danny had lied about owning the ranch, Dean the man he said was his brother is really his cousin and he's the one in charge. Dean immediately assumes that Beth is there to get Danny back, but when Beth collapses from fatigue he realizes that she's told the truth about recovering from an illness. One look at Beth, and Danny wants her back but he can't break things with his fiancee until she's had a serious operation, and so they agree to keep their feelings a secret. In the meantime, Dean makes her pretend to be his girlfriend so that Danny's fiancee doesn't suspect, and Beth comes to realize that she had only been infatuated with Danny and she really loves Dean. When Dean declares his own love for Beth, they tell Danny who takes it badly at first. It's only after Cindy's operation that Danny realizes he truly loves his fiancee, and then Beth learns that Dean had only been leading her on, so that Danny could come to his senses.

Wow, at the turn of every page it seemed Beth and Danny were in love, out of love, back in love... and then Dean, well he was in love at first sight, and then he wasn't but Beth loved him with all her heart, only to declare she was in love with yet another man to get back at Dean and protect her silly pride. This was another oddly entertaining groanfest!

I thought I like this author but this makes me second guess her a little. Now, I have mix emotions. This was slow & boring. 27% in the plot & the hero wasn’t even in the picture. Heroine never fit her supposed shy mold either. She was most, very verbal. Not a shy miss at all! I guess like most authors it’s a hit or miss & this was a strong miss.
